In 1985, I lived in Tallahassee. In September of that year, we were hit by Hurricane Elena (Cat.3). Then, in November of '85, Hurricane Kate came through as a cat.3. During and after Elena, we were out of power for 2 weeks. That started my mom on her candle obsession. When Kate came through, if I remember correctly, we didn't lose power. If we did, it wasn't for very long compared to Elena.

Florida has a hurricane season every year. I don't know why Florida hasn't built its buildings to be hurricane proof? Each building should be built on steel pillars so that each building is 5 to 10 feet above ground. This would help with storm surge. Also each building should be wind proof with steel encasement. But yet almost every year damaged buildings and houses cost the taxpayers billions. Hurricane proof buildings would also save lives.
