Hurricane Helene's Devastation in NC Called Catastrophic, Death Toll Still Rising

In the aftermath of Hurricane Helene, the death toll is still rising with at least 130 lives lost so far across six states. The most devastated area is western North Carolina where hundreds are still missing.
"It was way worse than we expected. We were not preparing for an event like this," said Teall-Fleming, a resident of Asheville, NC.
Drone video captures the extent of the devastation in Asheville where many roads are impassable, isolating residents and complicating rescue efforts.

I live 45 mins from Erwin, TN. All lost in my area was power....still don't have any but I'm not going to complain.....God has been so good to me.....there is so much heartache and destruction....There are so many to pray for that I just lift my hands at night and ask Jesus to hear the groans of my heart...just so many being found in mudslides...Thank God six were found alive buried in mud...so many still missing.....Thank you for your prayers. I wonder why the death toll is so high. There are floods in China every day and it seems there are almost no fatalities. Didn't people get any sort of warning that the rivers would be overflowing due to torrential rains? Or do people just ignore the warning and refuse to evacuate? It's rather frightening that in this day and age of high-tech that there isn't any warning of impending danger.

The National Guard responds in the event of a natural disaster not the United States Army. You do realize the NG was activated immediately by the governor of the state, right? They only have so many helicopters and high water vehicles as well as trucks. Roads and highways are impassable. What would you like them to do differently?

There have indeed been storms such as this before there! In 1913, two tropical systems collided atop the Blue Ridge, terrible flood in the Carolinas then. So not unprecedented, just rarely this big or bad. Grew up in Spartanburg, SC, so I know.
