It's been one month since Hurricane Helene brought flood damage to the Western North Carolina. This video includes shots along the Nolichucky in Erwin, TN as well as Poplar, NC and the Nolichucky River Gorge. See what the mouth of the gorge looks like now after the storm.

Sad... I spent the better part of 25-30 years guiding the Nolichucky starting in the mid 70s. What a striking contrast the post flood picture paints. I see the old store is gone, but Virgil and Jennie Peterson's old place is still there. I first met Virgil in 76 and he had a cable crossing to Ford the river. I fell in love with his homestead and the beautiful town of Poplar. I have many, many fond memories from those days. I don't know if I have it in my heart to return if it ever gets back to normal...

Raft guiding and kayaking that gorge all through the 80's, 90's, and early 00's seeing how big the geological changes to the river are is emotionally hard. It is like losing an old friend... I have no words. 😢

Excellent video here! I wish someone in that area would do a video series, even shorts, documenting the process of rebuilding the Poplar bridge. Very interested in seeing if they try to recover/repair/reuse the old spans, or build new. Kudos on a wonderfully executed vid of one of my favorite mountain areas, beautiful even in its ravaged state!

Thanks so much, and yeah they plan to replace most bridges in the area. I'll continue to post updates as things happen and I'm sure other folks will as well. Going to be a long hard road ahead for the region but no doubt it will eventually be back to some sort of normal. Thanks for commenting!

I would think that they would give the old bridges to the local people that lost their private bridges because don't think they would be safe for the weight that the train's haul but would be perfect for cars I no it would be hard to get them to where they need them but be a good write off for csx instead of scraping them maybe if your still there and see one of the big bosses bring it up to them just a thought by the way great work on these videos keep them coming I used to travel thru there back in the 80s / 90s / 00s hauling produce from SC and Fl still go thru once in a while for fun not work stay strong Tn / Nc

I think your footage really shows the geography and makes it’s easy for people not familiar with the area, to understand how many people had no time or place to evacuate to when the wall of water came. The sides of the gorge are steep, a lot like the canyons we have here in the southwest.
@Offroadviking

@@AstraLuna-o9i thanks so much for recognizing that. This is one of the reasons I make these. I just don't think folks truly realize how the terrain is if they haven't been here. Some rugged areas for sure.

@@Offroadvikingyou did a great job showing it. The power of that water was incredible. You can see how it scoured the ground leaving only the bedrock in place. It makes me incredibly sad for the people lost, their property and communities. Husband and I will continue to send monetary donations to the local organizations there on the ground helping. My heart and prayers are with the people there.

It’s so hard to imagine all the devastation caused by this storm. Every little place and town far and wide that was touched by this storm caused so much emotional and physical damage. The river as wide and tall as it became is beyond anything that could have been prepared for. Lives and landscapes are forever changed. God Bless everyone touched by this storm. Great video. 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻

You're very talented with that drone and you do wonderful videos!! Seeing places I probably won't see and finding empathy because I live in an area about 75 miles from you that was devastated also. I wish I could operate a drone to do the same for all of us here. It's overwhelming the devastation and the beauty at the same time. I'm from Avery County NC

Northeasyerm tennessee sure is a beautiful place. I moved zway from the area in summer of 1988. Did not finally get to move back to kingsport until thanksgiving of 2022. On the weekenfs o drive mu colorado zr2 truck and go driving up in them beaitiful unaka mountains. Beaury spot is one of my favorite arras. One of my other happy place is driving up hurricsne gap to the rich mountain fire tower in greene county. I finally got to drive up the mountain in the back of bumpus cove one week before hurricane helene's flood waters destroyed that community. We drove 13 miles up ontop of the mountain. It sure was a very beautiful area up there in bumpus cove. My dad's mom bonnie (Yates) Denton grew up back behind the bumpus cove cemetery. Her mother was a huskins. Her parents and her dad's parents ( phillip sheridan yates and eliza chase yates) are burried at the bottom of that cemetery by the curtis family members.

Good to see CSX have not abandoned the line through the gorge, probably cost millions to put right what nature has done to it but it is a lesson to all what can happen and of what we may see more of in the future. Sad when a river gets torn up like it has and it may be decades before it returns to anything like its former self.

The road from Burnsville to Green Mtn is Hwy 197N. It is being repaired along the river, not open to public. The Relief bridge is crossable, no guard rails. Best to go to Red Hill , then to Poplar at present time.
