I was 9 months pregnant, and went into labor. My son was born on top of the roof of what was left of our house. By the " GRACE OF GOD," we both survived but lost every thing. FEMA helped us with funds, and today we live in the Smokies in Tennessee. I SHALL NEVER FORGET !!!!

Surviving Katrina, me and lot of others lost everything... Water was so high, all you could see is the roofs of people's houses for miles. People went missing, bodybags and improvised graves along the streets.. Something no one should have to see in their lives.

The scariest part is that the wind was not even the scariest part. The flooding was something not even the strongest houses could escape.

I was 10 years old living on the Gulf Coast of Mississippi when this storm hit. It lasted 8 hours. 8 hours of watching 150 MPH winds snap trees in half and send them flying through the air. 8 hours of storm surge that exceeded everyone's expectations. 30+ feet of water. I remember that afterwards we had to wait 4 hours to even leave our driveway because there were so many fallen trees and we had no chainsaw. And when we did get out, there were boats from the harbors next to my elementary school. There was little ice, and people waited for hours in 100+ degree weather, only to find that the store is sold out. People were looting gas stations for bread to feed themselves and their families. Beautiful historic houses were just gone. People would walk into your backyard with guns trying to loot your home. We went 3 weeks without power or water. We ate one meal a day. We waited for rain so that we could shower, but rain didn't come for weeks.

I visited NOLA two years after Katrina. As a South Floridian who has gone through many storms, it was a sobering experience seeing such devastation and desperation that gripped the entire region. Some of the damage witnessed appeared if it it just occured. Not from an event two years prior. Seeing hoards of people living in tent cities under ramps and bridges leading into downtown NOLA made me weep. It was a humanitarian disaster. This storm went beyond destroying life and property. It exposed the inequities that people refused to acknowledge. The people I met during my visit were some of the most humble I have encountered.
@zerosoma33

What you saw is pretty standard for NOLA. Homeless camps are everywhere, not just during hurricanes. That whole city is a 24/7 disaster area and has been for the last 40 years.

With Hurricane Ida coming, I fear for Louisiana. Folks and areas are STILL recovering from Katrina. Coupled with the fact that hospitals are at FULL capacity right now due to covid and the levees are apparently eroding surprisingly quickly by 2023. I pray that the healthcare system and levees hold up, but it's not looking good.
@kobyschechter8163
@kobyschechter8163 2 жыл бұрын
The Lower Ninth Ward still hasn’t recovered from Katrina. That’s one major example of that. So far though only one levee has failed and the pumps are all working. Ida has catastrophically damaged a lot of buildings however. Especially in the French Quarter. The name will probably be retired when all of this blows over. Here in NY we will get a lot of rain this upcoming Wednesday and Thursday when the storm breaks up. We will feel Ida’s wrath even here.

The looting was horrible but I have mixed feelings about it. You had some people who were breaking into retail stores for medicine and medical supplies, diapers, formula/baby food etc.. The shit that pissed me off were the one's who were stealing TVs and other unnecessary shit and drug addicts/dealers breaking into pharmacies.

The last sentence should be changed to "their lives forever changed by the neglect of government officials to properly service the levies." The hurricane was bad, but it was the levies breaking that caused so much death and destruction. And that was avoidable, right Brownie?
@R3Cat

everything is avoidable after the fact... you can service those levies and then other levies that you thought were fine would break because mother nature is unpredictable

Re it’s not Mother Nature being unpredictable. It’s government officials not willing to allocate their money to maintain vital building structures. Those levies were in desperate need of maintenance,which was ignored for over 8 years. The price of our negligence was paid with human life. I hope they learn from this but I highly doubt they will.

My sister and I were just kids when this hurricane hit Miami. We had just moved from another country just one month prior and we lived in an apartment (bad timing). Our parents spent days boarding up the windows in preparation. We were huddled up in the living room bathroom when the storm hit. The winds were so strong it shattered our windows. Once the wind was in, it started banging and pushing into the bathroom door, our parents had to keep it closed while my sister and I were placed in the bathtub. It was a terrifying experience. I'll never forget the sound of the wind howl throughout our small apartment.

They didn't send any buses, but they didn't have a problem sending the national guard in.

Well, to be fair, buses have to travel on streets and the National Guard can fly in on helicopters. But that still doesn't excuse the lackluster response from our government. The state of Louisiana bears some of the blame too, because engineers warned them 2 years before Katrina hit that the levees were vulnerable if a Cat 5 hit. There is a video of their presentation on KZbin.

I dont think a bus can get through areas that are under 20 feet of water. As much as people love to blame the government there was so many things that all went wrong at once, there was no possible way to do everything at once.
