I love Lynch’s ability to turn everyday situations into a nightmare. He really allows the audience to get into the mind and emotions of his characters by presenting the viewer not “reality”, but a particular kind of evocative imagery. It’s almost impossible to tell when he’s being excessive because nearly every scene wants you to have the most extreme reaction possible - and I think that’s why it works so well. Nothing is left untouched by the nightmare, be it subtle awkward interactions like meeting the parents to a woman screaming in terror as she’s murdered by her father possessed by his childhood trauma.
@y-o-u-b8 ай бұрын
i think more of his films as an impressionistic or other classic, non-kitsch painting come to life and "work" like an intense dream oder nightmare "work", not intentionally. and at the same time there are on the other hand strong elements of immense beauty (not so much in eraserhead, but e.g. in twin peaks, which i suppose you are referencing ("childhood trauma" = bob??) represented by, or just present as the love of james, the soulfulness of cooper, the musical expression by badalamenti which sadly passed away recently, etc

the way I "read" Lynch: take away the weird stuff, you are left with the mundane neuroses of armored emotion, sexual repression, "normalization" of behavior...the general pathology that a Jung or a Freud would uncover...so the weird stuff is a metaphor for what lies under the facade of such a rigid, stale, lifeless "lifestyle" and culture. the stern frigid mother projecting her toxic standards on the boyfriend "what do you do?' probing to see his "social worthiness" while the neurotic daughter tries to seek the approval...
