I find it that a lot of Japanese people who have learnt to speak English fluently sound slightly Australian when they do speak English. What's also interesting is that a lot of Australians pick up the Japanese pronunciation quicker than many other English speaking countries. Is it because of our accents or something? Just a thought based on my experience...

I think Austrialians don't put much pressure in some sounds, exactly like Japanese don't, so for example you'd pick up the Japanese sound "u" quicker. But I might be wrong, it's just my suggestion.

+essennagerry Australian here. First, Australian English (in general) is a mix of British English, American English and nonsense English (case in point, Australian slang). So, it uses a mix of American and British sounds (eg: dah-ta over day-ta and dan-ss over dahnce. Except in SA where dahnce is more common). It's also a pretty lazy accent diction wise, so words are slurred together, and syllables might not be clear. So, some of the "mistakes" made by people learning English pronounciation wise can be similar to how Australian English sounds. I can't think of many off the top of my head, but this could be due to the large amount of immigrants that come here. I'm not complaining. It's interesting.
