It's always been what it currently is, just that spouses remained in loveless/abusive/overall empty marriages until they died because that's what society professed to be "correct". Also, men cheat just as much as women do. It's just culturally more acceptable for husbands to do this. What a wonderful cultural standard that must have been for the men, until women began to treat them the same.

Karenin wasn’t disinterested, and Anna was fully aware of that. In the book, she’s clearly an unreliable narrator. She sees and is fully aware of how her husband loves her and is hurt, but every time she’s quick to dismiss it in order to deal with her guilt. Most movie versions/online summaries ignore this as well as the subtle ways the repressed Karenin shows his love in favor of “tragic Anna leaves cold husband for passionate Vronsky.”

Are neither of you aware of what time period this story was written in? Anna Karenina was written by Leo Tolstoy in 1878. Divorce was out of the question in Tsarist Russia, because it was up to her husband to grant it. He would not. Marriage counseling wasn't done then, either. Psychotherapy wasn't particularly popular in Russia, during that time period, nor would someone of the landed aristocracy have chosen to air their marriage problems in a clinical setting. Betrayal of trust should never be taken lightly, regardless of the context. You're choosing to bring religious morals into this, which isn't necessary.
