The album cover was genius. That is New York City behind the statue of Liberty (the waitress holding up a glass of orange juice for a flaming torch, and instead of a Bible in her left arm, a menu for an American diner where they serve "Breakfast in America") Manhattan, behind her does have the twin towers and cups and salt & pepper shakers and fork's and knives for piers around the city.

Hi guys! "Fools Overture" is an epic masterpiece from this band. From the album "Even in the Quietest Moments." Glad to see you do Supertramp. This would be considered a deep cut, but it may have been released as the "B" side of a single. I always like how Rick Davies and Roger Hodgson traded off on their vocals on their albums.

Supertramp are the kind of band that if you only know and listen to the hits, you're missing out on so much other great music. Try Even in the Quietest Moments, title track from the same named album. A left field suggestion would be a song called Profondo Rosso by an Italian prog band called Goblin, probably best known for their soundtrack work for iconic 70 's Italian horror movies.

I saw Roger Hodgson in concert a couple of years ago, at the Royal Albert Hall, doing all the Supertramp hits. He's a brilliant performer and kept everyone entertained. I thought I knew Supertramp, but he played something I didn't know, 'Hide In Your Shell', and I thought it was the most beautiful song I'd ever heard. The song that got everyone up on their feet and singing was one no one ever reacts to, 'It's Raining Again'. I hope he knows how much his music is appreciated by a younger set of listeners, via reaction channels. But . . . how can I put this? Canada?????? 😲😲

@NicknLex Yay, Supertramp! Okay, a banger is Another Man’s Woman, from Crisis What Crisis (which is my fave, by them). You will probably notice that Rick Davies (lower voice, piano) writes songs with a heavy influence from American jazz and R&B, whereas Roger Hodgson wrote from a British folk/pop background and influence. The nice thing about Supertramp is this dichotomy, specifically. Here are some others: Rudy, Bloody Well Right and title track from Crime; Sister Moonshine and Another Man’s Woman (Crisis), the Title track and From Now On (Quietest Moments). Keep ‘em coming! Peace from Toronto!

On a personal level I find it amusing that this album by a British band really captured a feeling of Americana in this time period. I’m British and my parents used to play this album all the time when I was a kid. We moved to the States in the late 90s in my teens and I still closely associate this album with a ‘feeling’ of America. Whenever I listen to this I’m taken to a place in my head, driving on the highway through strip malls at night past diners and motels. It’s weird to have a sense of a place before you’ve actually been there, like a dreamworld becoming reality. It may also simply be the ubiquity of American culture in Britain when I was growing up.

Has it dawned on you yet that this band we all love is English, not Canadian. If you know their songs there are many references and recordings of Winston Churchill, and the war we suffered the remnants of, and saw in our early childhood, sounds of British railway stations and steam trains, heard very much on the rhythms of tracks like "Goodbye Stranger"and "Rudy'. I know because I'm of their exact generation.

You are correct Ronnie. My brother and I figured out the album cover under the influence of a mega dose of LSD 1 evening during the first week of April 1979, a week after the albums release. I remember that evenings tripping very fondly with my brother and also thinking how much of a revelation that was figuring out that cover all on our own. Then again, the acid was soooo good back then, we probably could have magically figured out the complexity of the Beatles White album too.

Supertramp is British, not Canadian( except drummer Bob Siebenberg, who's from LA)... Two vocalists, the higher octave singer is Roger Hodgson, the lower octave singer is Rick Davies Supertramp has four masterpiece albums: Crime of the Century Crisis? What Crisis? Even In the Quietest Moments Breakfast in America Two very good albums: Famous Last Words Brother Where You Bound Maybe 3 or 4 mediocre tunes, the rest very good to masterpiece To answer the last question posed by the commentators....Supertramp hasn't performed since the early 2010s....due to Rick Davies having health problems. Roger Hodgson left Supertramp in 1983 for a solo career, and there was no reunion, due to a longtime feud ( too lengthy an explanation as to why)between Hodgson and Davies.

Breakfast had a 'lighter' feel than Crime of the Century and even Crisis. It had a variety of great melodic songs, one of their best albums that's for sure!

Hi, Supertramp have so many wonderful songs. Love their albums. From an album called "Famous Last Words", I always play the last two tracks together...."Waiting so long" & "Don't leave me now" the ending of which always makes me cry - It's not the words, which do plant the seed, so when the end piece comes, it's gets me every time [ & it's the album cover with the scissors cutting the wire ]....Then from the album "Crisis What Crisis" ? the first two tracks must be played as one track - "Easy Does It" & "Sister Moonshine". I think if I just write more tracks it will just drown out the one's I've mentioned. I would consider a double track as I have seen you do this before & these tracks do follow on each other on the records....It's Roger Hodgson on vocals - like on Dreamer ... & Rick Davis on vocals - like on Bloody Well Right.....both singing on Gone Hollywood. Brilliant track & album. Love this. The tracks I mentioned I play a lot, especially from Famous Last Words. Thankyou for another great reaction.....I'm now going to play those last two tracks from Famous Last Words and get my box of tissues ready. Lol

Roger Hodgson and Rick Davies are the two vocalists who alternate as lead vocalist in the band. Very unique for a band to have more than one lead vocalist. The trail out on this song is so awesome.

Supertramp have two lead vocalists Rodger Hodgson(high register) And Rick Davies(low register) theirs was a very competitive and sometimes hostile relationship. A lot of their songs are verbal wars aimed at each other, but their differences were obviously their strengths.

Thanks for doing this reaction, along with many others you have presented. Here's my take on your question. Rather than individual Supertramp songs, "Crime of the Century" (1974), "Crisis? What Crisis?" (1975), "Even In The Quietest Moments" (1977), "Breakfast In America" (1979) are the quartet of LPs that I have enjoyed since first hearing them in the mid 70s, starting as a young teen. Which means that I may be your father's age... All four are consistently good albums, and each hangs together as a unit with a particular flow and sound, although of course you can listen to individual songs from any album. These come from a time when rock musicians and bands considered albums as a single entity (thinking of David Bowie, Pink Floyd, Jethro Tull, Genesis, Yes, etc), as well as then considering singles or songs separated from within that context. Btw, Supertramp in the 1970s featured two lead vocalists, Rick Davies (lower voice, who played keyboards) and Roger Hodgson (higher voice, playing guitar and keys), with backing vocals from at least two other band members. As it happened, I saw and heard them in concert in August 1979 on the "Breakfast In America" tour, which was a memorably good event. And yes, you're quite right, the "BIA" album cover is a representation of NYC made up of diner items. And since you asked about other bands, if you're interested in an obscure 1970s art-rock (and somewhat progressive rock) band, please check out 801. This band was co-led by former Roxy Music band-mates Brian Eno and Phil Manzanera. Their first release was a live album, and that is spectacular in terms of musicianship. And it includes a fascinating cover of The Beatles' "Tomorrow Never Knows". Expect that you may know that Phil Manzanera, a fine guitarist and solo artist, has also played both on recordings and in concerts with David Gilmour... Speaking of solo guitarists also known from work with bands, not sure how much music you have heard by Steve Hackett, who left Genesis after Wind & Wuthering. That could be another route to explore.

Hey Nick and Lex, I have a suggestion for later Supertramp. Try "It's a Hard World" off of the 1997 Some Things Never Change album. The cover art is cool on the album...and this song is Super-Supertramp. Breakfast In America was the #1 Album of 1979 - try Child of Vision. It is a "deep cut" as you were mentioning. Ken

I had not listened to Supertramp since 1979 when I bought this LP. At that time I only listened to the pop hits(my young unexploring mind) I came across this cut about 2 years ago and now I have been totally immersed from Crime to Even In the quietest and of course the non-hits on Breakfast as well as Crisis. The 4 LP trifecta, not many bands pulled this off.
