Went to their Burn tour concert and (what I can remember of it...) was dumbfounded by the sound of primarily Lord and Blackmore going back and forth song after song in a virtuoso rock/groove fest. Zeppelin may have been #1 in my heart, but Purple, especially with Ian Gillan, was #2. Live? Purple. Hands down, especially the Made In Japan album.

Saw Deep Purple soon after the release of Deep Purple in Rock. It was a four act program and their set was very short, just seven songs. None of the light and shade I would see in a 3-hour Zeppelin epic the next year. I owned the Deep Purple in Rock album and the Black Knight single that came out at the same time (it was not on the album!!) so the concert was eagerly anticipated. . I left with the impression the band was reluctant to wander far from their "sound".

I think the reason they played only seven songs is because they like to jam some of those songs for an extended period..also deep purple spawned a few genres they were hard rock metal blues Progressive jazz and classical those are many shades.
