I am unsure how to word this so I will just tell you of my experience. Please don't vilify me. I have a Malamute that was 13 in September. He is having trouble when walking too far. His exercise is going down due to his age. He is having problems with being too lethargic. My vet recommended getting a puppy. I resisted. I am not wanting to replace my aging dog. The vet told me that young dogs can give an older dog a new lease on life. Not just walks, food, naps. An older dog teaches and guides the younger dog. It helps mentally and physically. My Malamute had his yearly check 3 days ago and the vet said physically and mentally, he seems 5 years younger. I think my husky puppy did that for him. And now my dog is better because of the puppy and now the puppy is part of our lives part of our memories and when Eddie the Malamute is gone, Thomas the husky will be here, with the things that Eddie taught him. It is not a replacement Jamie, it is a continuation of the love and the lessons. I am not good at explaining things, but I hope you understand.

I think you make a good case, but I also understand Jamie’s reluctance being unsure how Sherpa would feel about a puppy. I wouldn’t know what to do either! Glad this worked out for your dog.

That’s very well explained and helpful. I never heard it like that before. The teaching thing, the new lease on life. Sherpa certainly likes seeing other dogs and people he says hi to on his walks. Very well behaved . I love that comment ❤❤

Perhaps he could consider contacting a husky rescue and putting his name down as an emergency Foster home. That way he will be helping them and he will be able to see just how Sherpa feels/reacts. He can always be a Foster Fail if all goes well!!

Congratulations on the house you both deserve it. I very rarely write in comments, but did want to mention my experience with bringing a second dog into the house with an elderly dog in residence. The first time was an accident but there is no doubt in my mind that as a result my wonderful older dog lived a couple of extra years. The “2nd” dog was a young adult rescue that had grown out of puppy energy. As a result and as life has moved forward I have always had an older and a younger dog. As the older dog’s activity wanes the younger dog adjust from being a playmate to being a good companion. I may have been lucky, but I believe dogs do usually figure out how to be happy together. This dynamic has repeated itself in my household over and over for thirty years. Take good care of yourselves and good luck.

Happy Birthday Sherpa. You are one lucky boy. Jamie, I heard your concern about getting a 2nd dog because Sherpa enjoys sleeping so much now, but do you recall how much puppies sleep? On average, a husky puppy sleeps 20 hours a day! In the remaining 4 hours, Sherpa could be a wonderful mentor for his new companion and the new companion could give Sherpa new focus. Just a thought. I'm sure you'll make the right choice.
