I am 35 now and my dad bought a husqvarna 350 when I was 11 if I remember right. That saw is old faithfully. Have never had 1 problem with that saw. I still run it today all the time in fact. I wish I knew how many hours are on that saw still a strong saw. I love that old 350

I built a few ported 350's for customers before building one for myself. I did everything but a popup piston, and it holds 12-13k in the wood. Great saws if you are looking for a lightweight hotrod. My ported 350 hangs right with my ported 65cc stihl, and the stihl eats wood.

I just rebuilt a burned up 350. Manual says 9,000 max rpm, but it's turning close to 11,000. Its not running lean. Why would it be running that fast over spec and won't that be an issue? Not ported and doesn't seem to have any air leaks.

Also that rpm is not in the cut or under load.

Id say opening up that exhaust port / hole is what gave you a few more CC's.

Nothing like a lite 50cc saw that runs like it has a 60 under the hood. You are making some of the best chainsaw related videos on youtube

The Stihl 029/290 came out with .325 chain & was thought to be mediocre until the larger 3/8 was used & then you had a saw. 1 thing I've noticed is that the older saws with the intregal crankcase were stronger & did well. Since these days you don't need to split the crankcase design of old, they, to me, don't seem to be as strong.

Just purchased a "Low Compression" 350 on Fleabay for cheap enough, and plan on doing a build on it fairly identical to Fugly. Ive already orderded a bunch of Huztl bits including a full 45mm kit that I will spend plenty of time on port work. I have watched all of your videos (especially the 350 based ones!) numerous of times. Driving the wife nuts! I guess all I mean to say is, you are the one I turn to when when it comes to doing research for my builds. From a fellow NY'er, I hope you keep the vids coming. Dont forgot about the 350's! I may bug ya a bit with questions if you dont mind. Thanks again for everything. Happy Sawin!

+Ryan Brown Thank you and those 350's...are like the lego's of the saw world..:) Fugly still is... Fugly! Goofy ports and all it runs better than the second OEM build "Fugly"

+afleetcommand Are the Huztl Ignition Coils "Unlimited"?
@afleetcommand
@afleetcommand 8 жыл бұрын
+Ryan Brown Yup. But unless you tweak the transfers I wouldn't wind it past 13500 anyway. A 346 will run 14300 but they are ported with that in mind.

I figured I would adjust blow-down, raise the exhaust port just slightly, and lower the intake. Nothing major...but noticeable. Thanks for the reply. I gotta say youre a great resource to have! :)

+Ryan Brown I actually like to keep the exhaust in the 103-104 range...more torque. I prefer to make the small saws act like a larger one vs. make them scream. Keeping the pressure on the piston by having that exhaust stay closed a little longer...that along with more compression might "cap" the rpms... but tends to boost torque. :)

*i never or rarely see anyone put any effort into achieving longer stroke. its always more air flow and compression ppl tinker with on their saws and not much else. torque ive been told is what it takes to cut the wood, not just speed.*

Got 1 of those now b/c of fuel line problems from a friend. Gonna check it out this week sometime. After close to 60 years of working on saws, it takes more to get motivated. 1 thing I'm curious about is why didn't you go to a 3/8" chain, not the small chain but the larger? Those came with .325 chain, never been much of a fan of it.

I'm thinking that by the time you add a 357 carb, a flat top piston, 3 bond and a muffler mod to a 350, you might as well be working on a 262xp or a 357xp.
@afleetcommand
@afleetcommand 10 жыл бұрын
True! Of course I had that stuff laying around.... and no 357 or 262 to put it on! Dollar wise, that "Huztl" 372 I built actually would cost LESS for me to replicate should I not have a junk pile and have to start from scratch! But the 800lb gorilla in the focus room for me is....weight coupled with cost. How much would it cost to buy a new saw that matches the power & weight of fugly Huztl 350?

I like your style, sir. Your videos help a guy who didn't know a damn thing about saws learn to work on his own equipment. I appreciate it. How do you know when it is applicable to open up a muffler and how do you decide how much? I put a meteor 52MM P&C on my 266. I have not done a thing to the muffler. I suspect it may need to exhale more. I am also considering deleting the base gasket, if the squish measurement proves there is room. All advice is appreciated. Thank you.

For saws with stock ports no more than 85% cross sectional area of exhaust port is a good place to start. Those mufflers are really "pressure cans"

Yes....and your intuition is closer than popular online logic likes to hear. What I have found is compression changes have the most tangible benefit's on these simplistic builds with simple tools. AND the more sophisticated builders make their biggest value add buy decking the cylinder along with re-cutting the squish band to both get good "squish" numbers AND with a resultant smaller combustion chamber get way more compression than simply removing a gasket. THAT more than anything is what you are spending dollars to get from the better builders. For those with out access to machine tools, Get that squish down in the .020 and that makes a difference. Muffler mods.... wow. Don't want to start a war! People forget that they are "pressure cans" where the rate of pressure increase and then decrease has to be timed to match the port timing of a motor. Blow down numbers in particular. BUT having said that. When the intake timing is altered along with the other things related tp flow, a proportional change in outlet size can help. I've found with the "farmer jones" build it pays to be prudent with muffler mods or fuel usage AND noise go up more than actual power.... if that helps your question.

Just got a 350 from a friend that wasn't running and the P&C looked fine. Replaced the intake band with metal, replaced the fuel line and did a quick tune up. Runs. My question is did you have any carb tuning changes once you went back and opened the muffler and removed the base gasket on the "control" saw? I have learned a lot from your channel, thank you for doing what you do.
@afleetcommand
@afleetcommand 6 жыл бұрын
No not really. Have to keep those tuned seasonally anyway. Just do the normal maintenance & tune as the temp changes will cause just as much need to tweak as the muffler mod.

I’d like to see how a 266se/xp and a 385xp stock would do time wise against the others just for fun. In my firewood bizz I ran 2100’s/266’s but the 2100 with a 16”/18” bar took timber down and bucked up from standing to on the ground bucked up in 50 minutes per cord. The 2100’s are beasts.

Walt I just got a 350 from local pawn shop for a good deal but I need some advice with muffler bolts as one of them has snapped off, already drilled it out but would a helicoil be the best thing to add threads?
@afleetcommand
@afleetcommand 7 жыл бұрын
What I've done is go up a size I think 6x1's, have to be really careful and straight or you can loose wall thickness. Also have to lightly ream the "tubes" in the muffler. I like to have the tight in those muffler tubes so the are less likely to work their way out. After that I take a brace from the 346xp's and cut off the "leg" to the flywheel side, just having the one to the clutch side. Haven't had one come apart with those two changes.

i will be buying a 340-345 or 350 soon,what is the thing about muffler-mod and removing the base gasket?
@afleetcommand
@afleetcommand 8 жыл бұрын
+Bob Djoey Base gasket usually is around .020 stock. The squish usually around .040. You get two things by removing the gasket, assuming squish allows. A slight change in port timing and a noticeable change in compression. Muffler mod can reduce back pressure. All those things together make a noticeable difference if done right.

He's down at his place.... three hours away! Life must go on though. Have to finish this logging op, then get ready for farm operations. Hay, fence work, a major barn repair project.... and an AHRMA race towards the end of summer on the place. Have to build an old style MX track.

888FOAD 353's are good saws... And I think you can put together a reasonable saw from the "Huztl" parts which are Chinese and workable when mixed in with a few "OEM" parts like carbs & intake parts.
