Tearing down this saw, splitting the cases to figure out how much damage was done by this bearing failure.
I promised early on that this entire video series was going to basically document my saw experience.... both good and bad. Both positive and negative. Un biased. Raw. As I live it. Unfortunately this one isn't a positive one; but it is real. It will work into a positive out come. Just not in this video... :) Also as you will see I do have choices as well. If you all care to comment soon enough....that will influence part 2. Since the top end is as factory delivered, wasn't off before; it does have a base gasket. "Did" is a key work here. Will it remain? I've seen this saw before as well. Prior issues this saw had were crush related and ignition related. Both typical of the environment it lived and unfortunately that saw series. Those plug wires on the cylinder isn't rare. Bottom line is this saw has led a rough life. SO... in its reincarnation; should it be a 372/371XP?? Or a 372XT? Please vote with a comment..:)

You said this saw has led a rough life.After you make the repairs,its still going to lead a rough life.This saw apparently works for a living and this guy needs a built like a tank,no frills,as bullet proof as possible saw.If the lower end will take the remain and you know a extra little magic to make it work,go old school and build a him a tank.He still has to do his part and pm.It will probably be a reliable saw after the faulty bearings are replaced,and its too bad the upper end failed and has to be replaced because of foreign material.Imo bearings taking that kind of rpm should not be caged in nylon or anything but metal.Good luck.Thanks for your videos.Will be waiting for part 2.

You answered some good intricate questions, so I have one too. I have a 2010 357xp, and I've been looking at 372xp's lately. I've come across a used one (no plate with serial #) that is an x-torq model with decomp on top, but it has the chain tensioner on the front of the case between the inside dog and the bar. I haven't seen any saws or details about saws that are in the x-torq lineup that don't have the tensioner on the clutch cover. Is this a well-made knock-off?

I was wondering if you could tell me how the sleeve bushing, and washer go in for install. my bushing has a ridge on one end and the other side doesn't and I can't remember how I went back in for orientation.

Assuming the crank & bearings are installed properly, THEN the seal. That little tiny oring seal next, the bushing...the washer next then the oil pump.

I bought one of those case splitters from Huztl and I really like mine! I also noticed last time that I was on Huztl.net, they are offering a 50mm 365xt P&C kit with the removable transfer covers. It's just my opinion but I am willing to bet that Huztl is going to be a more common name in the aftermarket world very soon!

I just want to make sure I had the correct bushing as mine has a flared end on one side(won't really fit the oil worm gear). and figured that that end went into the oil seal then the washer on top and then the oil gear.

Have to wonder why they would go with the non metal bearing cages, cant just be cost there must have been data to backup the change. ?
@afleetcommand
@afleetcommand 9 жыл бұрын
+Steve Rob They changed back to steel caged bearings. Wonder if it was simply a supplier thing. If I build it back to an X-torq, it's going to get steel caged Nachi's vs. OEM. Even though OEM is back to steel caged bearings.

How do you know the signs of the bearing letting go ? without taking the clutch apart, does this happen to most saw's also i notice you may be able to fix the piston and cylinder.
@afleetcommand
@afleetcommand 9 жыл бұрын
+Maxx Bullet One of the first symptoms is the saw goes lean acting like it has an air leak...because it does! When the bearings begin to go they let the crank "wobble" opening up that case seal. By the time you can see movement by pulling either the clutch or flywheel around its too late. Junk will be everywhere. SO maybe I should do a video about pressure checking lower ends because that can help determine if said air leak is form places like the base gasket, transfer caps, or main seals. If the seals are going on a relatively "new" saw....think main bearings.. :)

Thanks for your good videos!! I have buy two months ago a reconditioned 372xp 2010 .It was new oem bearings and a oem piston. My local chainsaw dealer recomend 2T husky LS+ racio 1-32 (98 octane gas) for first four hour (during running in)cuting oak t tres .My mesh at the mufler is not there (the gases can take out more easy). I use 3/8 lpx chain 18" 7 tooth rim / standard setings carburador 12500rpm max idle speed . Do you recomend mixture 1-40 LS+ in future? Can i change the setings of carburator to 13500rpm or is safer stay richer mixture? Greatings from oporto Portugal. André Campos

+andré Campos Stick with 32:1 with a good synthetic. I also use the Husqvarna XP synthetic 2-t oil. And 12500 is a safe place for those XT's highest you can safely take them is around 12800-12900. I would leave it at 12500... You set that at 13500 and it will take out the clutch side bearing after a year or so. Leave it at 12500..:)

+afleetcommand I'm assuming your 372 is an X-torq. The way you can tell is if the decomp is on the top of the cylinder vs. on the side where the old style 372's were. IF the decomp is on the side, that's a whole different game. Still recommend 32:1 mix but the old style cylinder was happy at 13500 no load RPM's vs. the 12800/12900 for the X-torqs (12500 is fine on those)

thanks for your response and advices. sorry for my next long history of my Husky baby.Mine is a recodit. 372 xp no x torq with some few minor damage for 250€ to my familys friend saw mecanic. I done a cirurgic clean of all air cooled components with a no acid fat cleaner in my husky,washed with soap and warm water the filter and clean air tubes to carburator-is almost like out of factory. Last fresh mixture i use in tests has 1-40 racio but dont make the 2t smoke usual in 1-32 mineral oil. With LS+ all oil in mix was complete burned resulting only transparent smoke! I`m afread because some say is good for lubrification of bearings when a bit of smoke run out the mufler...Ls+ is a no smooke oil then are they talking about old 2T Oil ratio with mineral base. Maybe woodcuters with chain deep limiters out overload the crank at chain side and maybe they recomend 1-25 racio to prevent bearings wear. Do you agree 1-40 LS+ mix in a very hot working saw cutting 16" oak tree and change to1-32 LS+ make diference? I woud like mine go to 13600 making" four cicle" but that mean i have a lean carburator seting? Last weak i make a test with full troothe in the wood i was scared with the cutting performance of the saw teeths tearing dry Eucalyptus.The saw stay high and torky -you say Tork is the way and i say the saw a sharp chain and good gas-mix and we need to have eyes wide open. I can buy a x tork second hand but for me and for my ocasional work my 372 xp 2010 is my saw.MY second saw for colect will be a 2101xp.There are very few or a ultra rare the homelite super xl automatic. I usual like to put foot on gas when cuting oak and Eucalyptus cuted end of last summer. I only buy my husky saw because i usualy help by free my uncle and like to have my stuff in my garage specially tolls.We buy a used saw from 1984 and work"s by twelve years in hour hands very well. Is a pioneer|partner 550 saw,but at last summer, i need to wait 1 year to find another saw to be donor of carburator and ignition coil that my saw mecanic when out of beasy days is reassembly and for worst in the end i pay usualy only labor time only for Know-and sorry to talk about : here in Portugal we have true blood race of horses - Lusitano. It is known there in US? were in portugal some mate Lusitano with arabe blood for improve endurance performance. My uncle say the fealing when doing 36miles/h ride in top a thoroughbred (psi) horse nothing compares. Thanks for sharing your wisdom. greatings André

Sorry for continue to use this way to have your valious fedback. Today a 372 xt was put to sell at internet in my portugal for 310 Euros. I contact the logger and he said is from june 2014 with 500-600hours use.He sell with oregon bar and new chisel chain. The husqvarnaagent from the area give a good informathion of the company.They buy new 562 and they sell the more heavy 372xt with 8 month -1 year use.I have mine like i discribe xp new oem piston rings bearing. I can sell mine my mecanic he say in that same day he sell maibY from 250(me) to 350€-100€ profit for im. I love the x tork because save gas,more high torque.I will wear the low rpm next 15 min 2800rpm and try to fell if there are lose of compression and try to see" if" the logger use the chain limiters or a bearings failure will apen in future. Do you recomend to any special procedure to see litle important details? Thanks and greatings from oporto Portugal

Only recently started watching your videos and they're great. Do you recommend any particular 3rd party parts supplier specifically for Stihl? I'm located in Australia. On s side note... which Stihl chain saws would you recommend for someone wanting to take on a salvage project for the first time. PS. Don't mind dealing with o/s suppliers.

I really like the Stihl 066/MS660 series because they are simple, solid, rugged, and have a ton of both used & am support options. Number two is the 046/MS460 and three the entire 044/MS440 family. They get a little pricy for what they are vs. the 660's that are a great "bang per buck" saw and can be built to match or have as much or more capability than any saw in their size/weight class.

Im true amazed with the two carburators and the six ports.The pistons will have new seals and new bearings. Someone say this chainsaw have a bearing problems because the x torq tend to lean the mixtures,do uou agree. I use husky Ls + in 1-35 safe racio but 576 save lote of fuel but that is a problem in lubrification? Tanks for all Gratings André Campos

I'd say convert it to "Old School" 372. Im a big advocate of the old phrase "Keep It Simple Stupid" (KISS). Cheaper and easier to repair/mod than an X-Torq. I know that this particular saw is a full time work horse so there's no mods on the horizon for this one. But god forbid it needs another top end down the road, it'll be cheaper to rebuild once again. Just sayin...
@afleetcommand
@afleetcommand 9 жыл бұрын
+Ryan Brown I think I agree. I have to be careful not to put my opinion in the mix.. I'm way more familiar with the old style ones... does that alter my vision?? Don't want to short change the X-torq's, just right now if I was to go with my gut...its old school for these folks.
