Years ago, I tried a similar exercise on my balcony and window sills in London. I didn't grow anything like 580kg, but I did get up to 83kg, which didn't seem too bad from a small bit of concrete. I now grow in containers in a concrete front yard in the Newcastle upon Tyne - and you are inspiring me to measure the harvest again!
@HuwRichards
@HuwRichards Жыл бұрын
Wow that is awesome!! And measuring crops definitely put into perspective just how much everything adds up, and I think for a lot of people will make them realise that perhaps their garden is far more productive than they thought!

Huw this is exactly where we are at giving all the economic uncertainty out there, is to use a little space as possible to grow as much food as can be done, with as little effort as and inputs as we can get away with. Integrated, organized yet flexible, year-round production, maximum maintained fertility, large variety of crops, and of course grown organically based upon natural principles old and new. We are just pushing the edge as hard as we can to really come up with a consistent and repeatable system of production each year. There is much pioneer work to do and I am so excited for what's ahead and where things can go, and breaking new ground. Really love where you are going with this.

This is my dream garden! Seriously-this garden is just perfect!😍❤️ I just got a small allotment plot in September and today I came home with a head of red cabbage (left from the previous plot holder), my first 2 turnips, few different type of lettuce, radishes and green onions for my salad. I am feeling proud of myself, seeing how pretty my broad beans, peas, onions and garlic are germinating. By the summer, I hope to taste again the billberries after 16 years not having any of them. Oh, and my own Saffron. I have huge hopes from this tiny piece of land and your videos inspiring me to continue what I am doing... so thank you.

We do that as well :) we just started last season and we have thousands and thousands of pictures of our 100m2 vegetable garden (plants, bees, lady bugs, chores done...well, everything and anything is good enough for a picture. Just like you I also weigh everything and calculate how much we saved. We put that money aside and re-invest it in whatever is necessary in the garden, being that seeds/plants or tools, etc. I always liked gardening. Used to do it in my balcony, but now it turned into a passion! Greeting from the Netherlands :) Keep up the wonderful work !

You should check out “Anne of all trades”, and homesteading videos or article. Particularly Amish techniques. I firmly believe you can have what this guy has. Even in Central Texas. I’m still fairly new to this, but I think your answer is going to be lots and lots of mulch. Pardon me if you know all of this. My point is that you’re lucky to live in Texas. I WISH I had your heat. I’m in western Washington. I’m trying to find heat. lol. You just need to find the niche for your area. I’m convinced by my research that anyone can garden anywhere and at anytime and with minimal cost. I always say I was born in the wrong era, however, we are fortunate to have access to all the information we need and crave. It’s out there if you look. My point was to inspire you. I NEVER comment on things. For whatever reason I was drawn to your comment. So I hope I didn’t insult in anyway. Happy Gardening and best of luck to you.

I've been watching your videos since you were still experimenting with flying planes and making cooking videos in your mum's kitchen. How far we've come! It still astonishes me what an independent, self sufficient man you have become. I'd still like to see you do another cooking video. haha

I've been making moves in my garden all autumn in order to fit in more raised beds. Have depleted my compost supply now so that will need budgeting for this year, although I may try to outsource compost material from some of my neighbours this year...... Even decided to get rid of dedicated strawberry beds and have replanted them around the edge of the beds instead. My paths were wider than needed so I decided to free up more growing room. Mine are only pallet collar sized beds, I now have 16 to manage. I like it this way because I can see to them individually rather than a whole daunting project! I pleased to say, thanks to one of your newsletters, I'm also growing an orchard (I now have 5 fruit trees in the garden 😂) I'm beginning to use permaculture design ideas in other "rougher" parts of the garden. Becoming a little more creative; Rhubarb now lives in a flower bed creating some ornamental structure instead of taking up space in a veg bed for example. My dream is to have a beautiful garden, which is relatively easy for me to maintain around work etc, whilst producing as my food as I can. I look forward to the new book and garden, and will backtrack on past videos for now to formulate my plan for next year over the winter. Regards and seasons greetings from us, in Kent 👋

@@HuwRichards big thanks to you Huw, you are an inspiration🌱💚🌿. I really love how you take healthy risks, always having an open mind on the outcome. And I'm so joyful you still have a growing space to eat from and explore with. As I'm entering into my second year of growing on my allotment plot, I really want to maximise the space and explore with the aim for self sufficient alongside permaculture methods. No doubt it will take time for me to get there but with your videos and books and my local community growing project group, I'm sure I will get there🌿🌿💚💚🌱🌱. So thanks again.

Very excited to start following you. We have just started work on a half plot allotment, opposite our home. Was given one of your books for Christmas, and noticed I had one from the library. Excited to have found you and have pre-ordered your new book.

This is so exciting! My own veg garden needs a revamp (I need to add raised beds, get rid of the grass paths, build hotbeds and up my compost game) so this couldn't be better timed. I've pre-ordered the book and can't wait to read it!

Brilliant! I said in your post about it that I thought it’d be an allotment garden, to show people how they can make an allotment productive Brilliantly relatable. Love this concept and I’m sure the book is as wonderful as your precious titles are. 😊

It will be great to dive into this book! My garden has been an absolute untouched overgrown wreck for the last two seasons due to caring for and losing my dear Mom, but I'm itching to set it to right and get it going again. Huw...you are so motivating when I see how practical your gardening is for the home gardener!

I look forward to you going into more detail on this, as I have near enough the same total area (118m² including paths) & a 3mx6m polytunnel. I really do think reducing one's expectations is a necessity regarding self sufficiency (don't expect fresh tomatoes, courgettes & peppers from December through May...). I simply change what I eat to suit what is available.

Congratulations on the new book! Excited about your permaculture developments to come. I am developing a food forest/permaculture garden, but its hard not to do what I've always done, raised beds and turned soil. So marrying the two the best I can. Look forward to your continuing thoughts of all three concepts.
