I spend a lot of time on your channel, your info is great, your videos are so freindly and interesting. One tip, if you can zoom in on a relay or something like in this video, just take a still picture up close with a digital camera, and insert it into your video.

@Metalcastr In my experience, most typical heat pumps are pretty good down to 20 deg F, then you start having to use your auxiliary heat source more. Some of the mini-splits out there can supply pretty good heat down to 0 deg F.

@thisisnotyours1 Yes, typically, the fan motor will be off during the defrost cycle. The system will defrost every 30, 60 or 90 minutes. It depends on how you set up the defrost board.

@avon504 What you have is a two stage unit. If both of the compressors are in tandem, they share the same refrigeration circuit. If they do not connect in tandem then they both have separate refrigeration circuits. It may look like you have only one evaporator and one condensor but you might have two circuits.

@georgexiong1 You really need to check the secondary voltage as where the wires come out from the transformer to test it properly.
@DrZarkloff

It sounds like you have either a bad thermostat or a bad defrost board in the condensing unit. You might want to check to see it you're getting a control voltage at the condensing unit calling for heat.

@catrachomg You really should have a tech do the job if you don't feel comfortable with it. The control transformer has two wires that are connected to the secondary side. One side feeds 24 volts to the (R) terminal on the thermostat and the other side feeds the common (C).

DrZarkloff There was a problem I noticed with the wall mounted heat pumps on the portable buildings back when I was in elementary school. I noticed when it was below 40 degrees, there would be no ice on the coils, and the repair guy said the charge and TXV operation was fine, but the system would short cycle in and out of defrost. The reversing valve would switch, and the fan shut off, but it only lasted 2 seconds, and it did this over and over.

@AJHAY041890 Fasten the TXV bulb at 4 o'clock if it's attached to a horizontal suction line. Then adjust the valve so that you're getting about 12 to 15 degrees superheat. Typically, the OEM TXV will come from the factory pre-adjusted to the correct setting unless you're using an aftermarket TXV. Then tweak in the charge by subcooling.

I have 10 years HVAC tech & I have a Vexar A-coil Model # 1854QA serial # M0407091193 with a TXV I need to know if I can swap it with a piston. I do have a 4 ton Nordinye condenser. If I do what size piston do i need. I believe it is 10 seer. The problem that I am having is that a-coil started to freeze up when I started to charge so i think the TXV is bad. Please advise me , thank you very much. I love your videos.

Dr. Z, whats the difference between the settings on an thermostat with fuel and electric? I get a call for green and white when the setting on the thermostat is set on electric, I switch it to fuel, I just get a call for heat. I am running electric heat, and I see the setting on electric, but it turns on the fan relay, and make the high speed come on. Just wanted to know why the setting are different. Thanks
@StephenRardon
@StephenRardon 9 жыл бұрын
Electric heat requires the fan signal because traditionally there wasn't any logic board to bring on the blower with a call for heat. Gas furnaces will control the blower from the board, or traditionally from the fan limit.

If you have a background in high school physics, or equivalent, where one learns about voltage, resistance, amperage, alternating current and direct current, inductance and capacitance, and how transformers and relays work, and you know how to keep 240 volts ac, 120 volts ac, and the output of large capacitors, from passing through your body, you can learn how your heat pump and air condidioner works, well enough to troubleshoot any problem it might have, in a matter of days. Yes, before the internet, I had to go to the library and have them get books for me on inter-library loan. If I liked the book, I bought my own copy. Today that is largely unnecessary. You can get the info on the internet, for free. It just takes a little googling, and some common sense in regard to weeding out the sources that are accurate and articulate, from those that are inaccurate, and written by the marginally literate - the trades are often a refuge for the partially literate, but some people in the trades are good writers, and speakers.
