I have 28 certifications along with a journeyman license and an associate degree of applied sciences for HVAC. It helps having an entire stack and a 2 page list at the end of my resume to show employers.

@@rolandogaytan7721 what certification do you have? If you have your 608, you're covered for life. Don't need to renew it but it's up to you in order to keep up to date on EPA laws. If you're NATE then you'll have to take it every 2 years.

My "608U/609-equivalent" was issued by the US Army Logistics Center, at Fort Lee; I was responsible for verifying "Class II Non-Medical (positive pressure protected) Clean Rooms" at avionics manufacturing and 'some' repair station facilities. All of that 'stuff', is required because of HEPA Air Filtration maintenance requirements. Go, get the training, while not plentiful, like HVACR, it is a great provider, financially; and definitely requires 'upper echelon skills-sets'.

Community college is probably the better route. Most offer degrees and certification classes. The for-profit trade schools are pretty dicey in my opinion.

I’m doing mine on SkillCat, it’s an app with all the accredited courses for anything you need in the hvac trade. $10/month!! I just got my EPA 608 universal on there.

@@luzapodaca3369 I'm a commercial installer and I'm at $20 an hour which is bad.... even if im at 7 months in. I had 2 years of prior residential doing installs so I should be at $25ish or more per hour but good luck finding a company that pays you what your worth. When everyone and their mom goes into business for themselves the company has to cut labor costs to bid for jobs unfortunately especially if they're a start up.

I am happy doing IT but I want to get legal to mess with phase change coolant junk which means certification or the EPA will ruin my life. Trying to figure out what all I need "just as a hobby", no commercial activity. I figure bare minimum it's the 608. If so that's reasonable. I just have some funky ideas, as an amateur inventor I'd love to test some stuff, even though most will be a dead end.

I'm from Puerto Rico they require us to get 1300classroom hours and a diploma the 608 Universal, 609, PR Refrigeration & Air Conditioning Technician License and we have to register with the CTRAPR Colegio de Técnicos de Refrigeración y Aire Acondicionado de Puerto Rico. Similar to a Union but marginal benefits.

If you have all 3 you qualify as universal. Not sure if you can get the physical universal certificate/card at that point, but you are technically universal if you have all 3 types.

I live here in KY also was going to get into carpentry then as I drive around through tri states almost daily . I see you can’t compete with the Latin people because they are the carpenters, roofers, framers, flooring and landscaping, then I had a bulb go off in my head as I never see them in HVAC, or Electrical trades!?

I want to get into commercial appliance repair. I’m not interested in obtaining an HVACR license but I’m wondering if it’s required for refrigeration. Where’s the line drawn between refrigeration and HVACR? I’m assuming for now that it’s required to have a HVACR license to work on walk in fridges/freezers but not reach ins. I want to work legally but the literature isn’t clear on this and the potential refrigeration rules seems silly to me. I’m in New Jersey and licenses are required here but If anyone knows details on this subject I’d appreciate a response.

Yes I did it for more than 40 years; get a digital pager so you can decide how soon you must get back to the caller. Many calls are from salesmen!

Kentucky is my state, thank you for the information, are you in the Louisville area or further on down south like me. I am a certified electrician and only 19 I put off school for such a long time, now it seems like the people are in positions, and the jobs I need for journeyman licenses (which is 4 years for just the journeyman) are full up, so now I have an opportunity to get my master licenses In the same time it would take for me to get a journeyman license, I understand though, an electrician wires the whole building. Wish me luck I hope I can build my school in my 60s that is the dream.

Depends how far you want to advance in the trade. If you want to be a technician then you'll probably only need a diploma. But if you want to be an engineer and design hvac systems then you'll probably want the bachelor degree.

What if my goal is to have a service truck to truobleshoot and repair home systems? I have no ambition to hire techs or be on the construction side. I might want to get into the commercial side later. It seems like it'd be a waste of time for me to learn how to build and install duct work if ill never do that in the field. There is a HVAC school at my local CC and im not opposed to going, but I think I might do just as well to get an online certification and apprentice under someone. I know a guy that I think there's a good chance would hire me. Based on my goal, please tell me whay you think.

if you don't have to get the clotshot to go to school still then definitely go to school. if you're unemployed or making less than 30k a year at the moment FAFSA will cover 90% of your tuition costs it'll only cost you like 1200 dollars for two years of school where you get to flirt with the girls. However if the school requires vaccination just give up and get a slobjob. No education is worth losing your life over from a broken vaccine.

I`ve been an engineering technician for 20 years and have an associates in electronics. Projects I work on are of various nature electrically and mechanically. We develop a broad knowledge when it comes to taking on tasks. Things can vary from very low power to high power and so forth I`m versed in using all types of equipment such as scopes, meters, signal generators, analyzers, etc With that being said, would a company hire me based on my background thats within the field and might they be willing to just train me accordingly on HVAC specifics? I`m curious as to how I would be viewed as a potential hire (I`m strictly interested in Commercial HVAC Servicing by the way)

With your background you should be easily employable; however if your employer does commercial and residential work you should abide by their rules!

I worked in commercial refrigeration and residential HVAC. I also passed the contractor’s HVACR licensing test. I tried for several years to get a job in commercial HVAC but nobody would hire me without five years experience working on commercial HVAC equipment. You have to know somebody to get a good commercial job.

I know I need the 2 years as an apprentice, but I want to go ahead and take the journey test. In NJ employer have to sponsor me for 5 years to take test for license. Test ok. Get tested all the time, verifiable work experience that to ok. Gotta show my competency. but sponsor for 5 years by current employer. F__k! Not a lot of employer are willing to sponsor for 5 years f__k years. They know most of us who are willing to jump through hoops will quit & go out on our own once we have the license. CCP china call it “GUANXI- The Connected”.

Technician like you is probably the reason I had to take class on appearance and customer interactions. With extreme hillbilly appearance you're most likely going to end up with low score reviews and unfair salary. You can be highly talented Technician yet won't be given fair chance to work on sophisticated equipments.
