A clean evaporator coil can make a huge difference in airflow in the cooling stage and proper maintenance helps.

why go through the time to remove the coil? How much did you charge the customer?

what did you spray on it first..coil cleaner?
@mattcatchpole73676 жыл бұрын
I was always taught to put a micron or torr gauge on the opposite side of the system from where your vac pump is. Either that, or a gauge line is attached to the high side and one attached to the low side with the micron gauge attached somewhere on the liquid line, if a port is available. That coil cleaner looks brilliant! I'm not a fan of coil cleaner, but that looks the dogs! Good work brother (from the across the pond!)

I would have given the coils a second and third go round with the foam cleaner and used a flashlight to see every square inch to see spot treatment was needed. It cost a ton of money to have a tech just to come out much more to remove the coil and clean it then to spend an hour with a vacuum pump then to charge it. You gotta get that annual maintenance where the tech comes out to check the system and clean when that crud is starting to form.

I have always thought you were supposed to spray the dirt out from the other side of the coil. Using that outdoor coil cleaner in my option etch the coil and makes it easier to catch dirt the next time.

A tech came to my house and said my 27 yod system needed to be replace. I clean the coil myself and my unit run fine now without freezing up.

I was also able to clean my own evaporator coil with two cans of evaporator foam ! I used a dog an cat hair shedding brush on the coil dry at first , a lot of surface dirt came out to my surprise after that I started spraying the foam inside the coils with cleaner supplied small plastic tube,two cans of cleaner work best,put access covers back on an turned AC on an according to instructions on cleaner the remaining dirt rinses away along with condensation, as a couple of days went by the AC got colder an colder then started getting icy cold!! It’s 103 here in Waco Tx. An this really paid off big time!! The entire system is 17yrs old, but now cooling like new!!! Hope this can help someone else!!!!

I always thought you couldn't use the harsh condenser coil cleaner on the evap coils or is this a foaming evap coil cleaner? It may not be condenser coil cleaner, just looks like it.
@tombonini73936 жыл бұрын
You can't use it in place because there is no way to properly wash it out. If the coil is removed like in this case and you have a place to properly rinse it .....

What if you can't remove it and it's hard to reach but reachable
@cli_sensei2 жыл бұрын
@@sarahbrown4355 they have evaporator coil cleaner that's self rinsing. The condensate from the AC running rinses it.

Hi John, how did you know the coil was plugged? THANKS FRIEND
@hvac014536 жыл бұрын
This was a far superior cleaning than you would accomplish with the hose end sprayer style. It just foams up so mech more and pushes out so much more embedded dirt from the coil. The only step that would do better is using the power washer to force the dirt out. They yell you not to use Nubrite on inside coils but, experienced HVAC tech know its the only way to get out embedded dirt from the coil, it just requires extra precautionary rinsing. Some techs spray a weakened solution of evaporated no rinse, if there is a concern of any off gassing of the chemical with customers with sensitivity issues. removing the top plate was going the extra mile. I saw the pan for horizontal install off to the side. Do you leave them off?

Really matters from company to company. Some have fat flat rates while others have very tight flat rates. One company I worked for charged a 6hr minimum from start to finish. Another company charged 4hrs which is kinda cutting it with no room for error or surprises. Last company I worked for did T&M on everything.

How satisfying to thoroughly clean a dirty coil! Generally speaking, in a situation such as this, do you charge the system with new gas or replace what you took out and top up where needed? I assume yes for R22 but not sure for others.
@tombonini73936 жыл бұрын
Why would you waste refrigerant. In many cases, the existing refrigerant can and is pumped down into the condenser and only needs to be released back into the system after the work is done, the system checked for leaks and pulled back down.
@bzerk866 жыл бұрын
Ah yeah, I didn't't even think about the system being pumped down, I thought it could have been pumped out into gas cylinders.

Looks like someone tried to scrape the dirt off the fins on the inside and bent them. No amount of cleaning is going to let more air pass with them so bad. You may have some luck with a fin comb. Good luck.
@pw6048 Жыл бұрын
Nope. John bent them using the water jet. At 2:54 the outside fins are strait, and at 2:57 they are bent. Terible job, that should not been done this way.

The way your micron gauge is set up, your measuring the vacuum in your pump. Not the vacuum in the coils & lineset.
@gramarmy6 жыл бұрын
Not true, almost all vacuum pumps have a shut off valve built in, so you can isolate your pump. if you shut that off, you will read the vacuum in the system. BUT, I do agree, I am not a fan of putting it there for 2 reasons. 1. Your vacuum gauge can get oil in it more easily there. 2. If your hoses and / or gauge leak, it will look like the system has a leak, when it really doesnt. But Im sure John tests his gauges / hoses for leaks on a regular basis.
@tytig946 жыл бұрын
How often do refrigerant hoses last? I've heard some guys say one season and others say just change the fittings. I am a fresh service tech this year(started beginning of cooling season(Midwest)), I need all the information I can get.

Schrader core removal tools and Nitro have been the ultimate prescription for fast vacuums for decades. Your micron gauge is also too close to the pump. Try testing two exact same micron gauges at the service valves and at the pump, you'll see the difference. Switch the same gauges and there will still be a lower micron reading at pump then at the valves. Lucky for Ref guys most evap coils have a schrader port at the evap to slap a micron gauge on. I know its a crap shoot on residential AH's. Thanks for the video sir
@georgen.80273 жыл бұрын
Pulling through the manifold makes no difference to the vacuum... bigger hoses don't make the vacuum "stronger", just faster. You can pull a vacuum through a pin hole if you don't mind sitting and waiting...

Isn't that a bit rough handling of the coil? Guess I look at AC systems as fragile (to a degree). @gramarmy6 жыл бұрын
It is all metal. The only part you NEED to be careful on is the metal fins on the coil. They are aluminum and they bend very easily.
@bababooey75766 жыл бұрын
Oh i know, i guess i was just thinking of all the joints at the ends that could leak....was thinking maybe if it was roughed up enough, it'd spring a leak or something...maybe my ocd, lol. yes bending the fins...argh pet peeve of mine.
