My guess is it leaked at the plastic tubing Connections, the threads are spiraled, which I believe would leave a small tiny passage for air to get through

Worm gear clamps are an issue.... tubing is also an issue..... etc etc ....

When we did this in trade school. We had a jelly jar with a metal lid that would seal and we epoxied a flare fitting to the top of it. You can watch the water boil out of the jar

What Ive learned from this video is that even if you’ve been doing it for 17 years you still use “lefty loosy righty tidy” to make sure you spin it right

Like the video good concepts you were going in the right direction but by the sound of the vacuum pump there was a leak The water should’ve been boiling that was another indicator that the vacuum was not drawing down properly had nothing to do with the oil Wish I had time to repeat that experiment for you film it and post it I actually got the two 50 foot rolls of coil 3/8 inch and 7/8 all coil up right next to each other for that very test that you just performed. I’ve had the fittings ready to Brazing just been too busy So remove the vinyl tubing put Schrader cores and put caps on repeat your test and find your leak first. You should be able to clear out the copper and get it down well below 100 µm if not there’s a problem

PS when you slip your vinyl tubing on get some silicone grease Spark plug boot grease put around the threads your fittings before sleeping on the vinyl

Great concept! I like what you are trying to demonstrate. The issues I have though; It looks like your vacuum pump oil was already contaminated right at the start. The oil in the pump sight glass was milky looking. The idea of using the clear tubing for the demonstration was great, except I would have suggested putting the tubing over straight copper instead of the service ports. Those threads would be difficult to seal off.

This is why pumps have a gas ballast so it doesn’t pollute the oil. I had someone flush mini split lines with water. I blew out what I could with nitrogen but it took a while with gas ballast open to get the water out. System works 5 yrs later.

My guess is the tubing is permeable or the connections were poor and you could not get the vac low enough to boil water. At 70° you would need 19000 microns to begin boilings

A Mason jar with a rig on the top would be better, it would not collapse.😐🤔

This is what I think would work better also.

This is an excellent experiment, but you should be using a small glass container for the water and all vacuum-rated components. The vinyl tube leaks and the connections at the end of it leak the worst. I'm sitting here watching my vacuum pump evacuate my system and it's down to 18 microns. I don't have dry nitrogen for a triple purge, so I want to confirm how long it takes ice to sublimate at these levels of vacuum. You're not even below the triple point where you'd lose all the water. That's somewhere around 4000 microns. I want to see what happens to ice down below 100 microns.

Vinyl tubing is the culprit.

May be you should use a sight glass instead of a soft tube. In my experienced and understanding the water should boil and some moisture would be mixed in the vacuum pump reservoir together with the oil. And some of it may escape from the vacuum exhaust .
