It is sad that whoever did that did not go to the minimal expense of getting some actual duct tape (not the duck tape too many people call duct tape) and sealing those gaps up so that conditioned air was not being blown into that attic. The money saved in heating ( and maybe cooling) would have paid the cost of a roll of duct tape a thousand times over.

Return grill and filter bad for sure. The flex duct connection was a head slapper; talk about not even close. I saw the larger than 16" inches ( O.C. ) on the joists and hoped you had some old plywood or OSB for a temp platform. Nice work. Thanks for sharing for the retired guys too.

You're so lucky you have that van. My company has only GMC and Chevy junk. There's something wrong with any of our vans at any given moment, they're uncomfortable for the long drives we do, and they're 5 years in the past. The 150,000 mile 2019 GMC they gave me today doesn't even have bluetooth or a key FOB while the Transits can be remote started. Great furnace diagnosis, though. I have only my personal for residential experience.

For the life of me, I don’t understand why people install them facing walls like that I mean, spend the thing 180° add a little bit of length to the return. It will help with the blower noise and then add some supply duct I charge extra when I gotta do dumb shit like this
@danobrien31094 күн бұрын
As soon as I saw that return grille I thought, they have cooked the limit control. Then you opened the grille and I saw the filter and said to myself “yup fried limit for sure “. Was surprised that the relay was the problem. What a shit hole, how do you do it Curtis? 👍👍🇨🇦
@TheOnespeedbiker4 күн бұрын
I'm guessing if it was the limit control it would just shut everything down, it's a relay that turns the fan off and on (but I'm not an HVAC guy) and that thing was cooked. OTOH, Curtis says it all pays the same, but damn. I've crawled around mice urine/turd attics and ceilings when I was a young electrician and it can certainly make you sick; maybe he's just immune to it by now.

I wouldn’t work on this, till facing right way and with safe access to it. If you fall through the ceiling and get hurt , who is gonna give you anything? And you gonna have to sent someone to fix that ceiling too. All while you limping around the house with broken leg or something, not able to go to work. I appreciate you trying to help people, but , I am sorry, my family comes first.

I thought immediately after looking at the return air filter, and the top of the equipment, that it's time to go! I just don't want to get sick, from Airbourne smells and crap and then start pucking or hurling every time I see the filth, everywhere! Plus the safety hazards of the unsupported work space in front of the air handler! If you damage the sheetrock You are responsible, not them! Very upsetting and unsafe to you, and to bring this back to your home! Not No, Hell NO!!! Not for Money or to help these people. Get someone else, I will not! Sorry just the facts.
@oldtimefarmboy6173 күн бұрын
You should have put a dust mask on before going into the attic. From the looks of the return air grill and the filter it is obvious that a big part of the problem is a total lack of care by the tenants of the building and their willingness to abuse it. And I speak as someone who grew up in a very old house whose "foundation" consisted of ceder post that had rotted away a long time ago so that the floor joist were sitting on the ground and had no insulation and nothing approaching central heat or cooling. And yet we kept the house clean and well maintained as well as the yard watered and mowed.
@genesun714 күн бұрын
I'm just spitballin here but could part of the problem be that the filter hasn't been changed since the house was built? Just sayin!
