It should have been written into the engineers contract that designed those units.... "Every time one of those motors has to be replaced you have to go out with the technician and do it!" Now let me ask you one more time Mitch, before we put these things into production. "Do you still want to design this unit that way?" 😂👌😎👍

From experience when ever I change an exhaust motor I give the customer a price with and without hx replacement. I explain it to them why. Then its covered. Bryant and Carrier are known from day one on those models. Wonder how many times the high limit and the saftey operation codes came on. Gotta set the gas pressure correctly too when done cuz incomplete combustion has been there for awhile.

The thought occurs to me that you could use a smoke machine as used in auto repair to inject smoke into the heat exchanger and then inspect for smoke leaks around the heat exchanger. Then you can detect a failed heat exchanger without having eyes on the rust holes. what do you HVAC guys think of that?
@michaelangelo62178 ай бұрын
If the heat exchanger tubes had holes in it a smoke device may be useful. Not sure if it would have done any good on this one since the rust was around the plate that the heat exchanger tubes are mounted to. If you notice in the video; unless i am mistaken, there didn't appear to be holes just very thin and rusted/brittle metal surrounding the tubes which led to further investigation into the matter i.e. poking it. Best advice I can give to someone is stay away from gas units and stick with a heat pump if you live in the south. The components of gas units will rust and need replacing due to burning propane/natural gas. The fuel that burns to keep your home warm will cause the demise of the unit.
@KenKen-ui4ny8 ай бұрын
@@michaelangelo6217 I not too much of a fan of heat pumps, unless it a dual fuel system. That arctic blast we had go through here last month, pretty much exposed why that. Heat pumps are deficient in below freezing weather. Gas package units have been also more prone to rust then indoor standalone furnaces, due to the fact during the summer time, you got hot humid outdoor air inside of the combustion chambers of the heat exchanger, and on the other side is really cold conditioned indoor air. That going to create condensation, that could promote rust.
@gor3128 ай бұрын
@@KenKen-ui4ny It's more that this particular unit has an absolutely idiotic design flaw. You have hot air rising from the bottom and then doing a U-turn at the top in that large box (where all the rust was). It's a pretty obvious spot for condensation of the acidic combustion gases because one side of the flue box is basically exposed to outdoor air. Once condensation ends up there, it really has nowhere to go. So you have nasty acidic water building up in there and then running down into the inducer and corroding everything in the vicinity. I think the reason these units have issues is because the air is flowing in the wrong direction relative to the gas in the heat exchanger. Normally, you design heat exchangers so the return air hits the coldest part of the heat exchanger (the end closest to the flue) and the air gets heated as it goes through. This minimizes condensation issues, since any condensation that does occur during startup will eventually get burned off as the unit warms up, and it isn't going to collect in the heat exchanger. In this unit, the leftmost arm of the heat exchanger is getting hit by all the cold air, and you could be getting condensation in there the whole time the unit is running. This is definitely suboptimal and necessitated by the layout of these units.

The person that designed that didn't care about nothing that anyone said or thought, he probably didn't like his job either.

Hi Curtis, so how do you handle the equipment while you wait for approval? Do you have to put all those rusted parts and bad motor back? Or do you come to an agreement with the customer to leave it disassembled until they come back with a decision? Just curious to see how that’s handled. Great job on my opinion. You have to pull the power and the gas to start to get to the draft inducer. That is absolute crap right there. I thought York's 5 ton units were a pain in the butt. This is next level. Edit: Checking heat exchangers can be a real pain too. Sometimes you can't see 100% of them even with cameras, even with with removing panels. A match test works often, but I'm in the midwest on rooftops or outside mostly. Can't get a match to stay lit for testing purposes..... I hate it when I've done work, then discover my repair won't work because of bigger problems, then I can't bill out on anything because we have to wait and see if this is an approved repair or changeout or what.
