I just wanted to reiterate the fact that I am not saying that these series are objectively bad. If you like one of these series I’m so glad that you do and this isn’t me saying that your taste is bad if you do like it! A lot of these series are highly regarded in the community. I appreciate you guys and I hope you can respect my opinions!!! :)

When I finished Punpun I immediately sold my volumes. It definitely didn’t emotionally devastate me, or really have any huge impact on me at all. I also didn’t find the characters relatable at all, even though many people say they do. I dropped Cells at Work too. I felt like the “teaching” aspect interfered with the actual story most of the time, so I didn’t enjoy it. I’ve been thinking of making a “manga I’ve gotten rid of” video, which would be similar to this one, and also very controversial lol.

It's very refreshing to see a comment section filled with understanding people even though they share different views! My feelings are the exact same with yours in regards to PunPun. For me personally I didn't feel as invested into the story and characters as I thought I would be. I feel like I forced myself to read it through to the end because of how loved it is, and I think that was a big mistake on my part. It clearly wasn't something I was connected to, but I wanted to give it a shot either way. But I think it's great that people like it. The world would be boring if everyone liked the same thing anyway :) Nice to see I'm not alone when it comes to certain opinions!

Man PunPun had everything for me. I read all the same stuff people were saying as well before finally reading it myself. I think what attracted me to PunPun was how I could really relate to and empathize with so many of the characters. Not to mention the art was absolutely masterful. Its really a unique experience.

It’s easily the best shoujo manga objectively and yona’s character development is the best I’ve even seen from a female protagonist ever - from a spoiled princess to a badass female warrior fighting for her people and her beliefs (it’s surprisingly surpassed nana and fruits basket for me and that’s really saying something) [this is coming from someone who primarily reads berserk and other seinen manga since soowon is definitely griffith in shoujo form, hak - guts, yona - casca, and yotd is definitely the shoujo version of berserk because of the similar parallels]

It's different to see someone say they dropped it but I can totally understand why and totally respect your opinions on both series and love how you were able to say u dropped them confidently. I think financial it is a big factor to continue or not a manga. even if it's just some extra bucks in the end they make difference. And if you think is not worth spend that much on something then it's ok already. it is your money you decide if you want to use it or not.

It's completely normal to not like or be interested in every single hyped manga series. I also think, that there are many animes, that does the storytelling better or I enjoy more in general than manga. Great video to show, that everyone can have their own opinions and give constuctive criticism!😀

I STRONGLY recommend Children of the Whales, it’s the only shojo I’d recommend to a predominantly Shonen/Seinen fan base. Read the synopsis and that should be enough to whet your appetite. I’m also reading A Bride’s Story. It’s my favorite Slice of Life I’ve read. Although it shouldn’t matter, I’m a guy and I like a story about women being married off (mostly for political reasons) and finding themselves through bonds with others.

Since I've started reading manga digitally, I don't really think of this as too much of a problem anymore as I never buy things in bulk. I also tend to try out new manga if the first book is free. That way I don't have invest anything other than my time to check out a series. It's not worth it to force yourself through a series if you don't like it. There's plenty of other good manga to read.

i wont say much what everyone else has told you about goodnight punpun, so ill give my own take on it: you need to read the whole entire series to be mentally destroyed. not to say that the whole story isnt like- good until the last volume or something, but after you finish it..you look back on everything you just read and you're broken. people often say "oooh, after i read punpun i was depressed, i couldn't sleep/eat, i was sad for a month" nah. after I read it, I was maybe thinking about it for 2-3 days, and was sad for 2-3 days, but it def didn't destroy me. Also, people say "dont read this if you're depressed / deal with mental illness" but I do, and I was completely fine. It's Punpun's life story, and to stop half way through his life just isn't fair tbh edit: after each volume, i looked at a podcast that discussed each volume in extreme detail, and it gave me so much more appreciation for the story. i didn't understand a lot of the themes/messages, but after watching people connect with it in their own way, i found my own way to connect with the story and appreciate it so much more

Yea, I love HxH (story is great) but I totally get it. The art in the manga isn’t my favorite (very sketchy at times). I believe it’s due to his health that the consistency in the quality is off 🤔 it’s also why it goes on hiatus so often 🥲 Definitely agree with Chainsaw Man though. It’s not my cup of tea 😅

Going in with preconceptions about a story is so dangerous. I heard that Berserk Golden Age was a masterpiece and every other arc was meh. After getting caught up with deluxe editions I ended up thinking golden age was okay but conviction was really good and I feel like 90% of that was because my expectations were skewed. 😅

Great video! I totally think your reasoning for dropping a manga due to pricing is valid! Collections add up and it helps you in the long run to invest in what you thing is worth it ( and it’s okay to change your mind). I’ve been reading Ajin digitally for the same reason that the physical volumes are on the pricey side and currently not within my budget.... Such an amazing series tho! Maybe one day :’)

It relied on it's relatability, obviously not literally because the characters and story is exaggerated but on a foundation level, people that relate to the story in punpun just had their life basically broken down and put in such gut renching way it had an astounding impact and that what makes it a remarkable and memorable series for a lot of people.

punpun is definitely my pick for the best manga i've read, but i think the way you enjoy it is by completing it and then reflecting on the story as a whole, maybe rereading again to pick up on the details. otherwise, a lot of the development you see doesn't pay off, because it's his life story. i see how that might not be an enjoyable way to read manga for some people, though, especially since there isn't any action.

As a HunterXHunter fan, I'm kinda glad you didn't drop the manga due to the hiatus cause a TON of people tend to drop it cause of the hiatus. Personally I feel like the art at times is mediocre at best but the story itself makes up for it in my opinion. I honestly feel like not a lot of manga tubers would make this kind of video so props to you ☺️

Your complaint about HxH is one(of MANY) reasons why I try to avoid most non-seinen in general, once I admitted to myself that art is important to me, I couldn't stand looking at a lot of them. I barely could to begin with. It's also a big part of why I prefer Western Graphic Novels like Saga, and Monstress. Still read Manga though, I just feel like I gotta be a lot more picky. I almost dropped Chainsaw Man after reading volume 1 and 2. Then I gave it another try and read volumes 1-3 and fell in love with it! I think I was in a bad mindset reading it the first time. Now I’m like, I can’t believe I felt that way! Sometimes giving another try helps. Anyways, however you feel about something should be respected! You can’t help how you feel :) I loved the last season of Game of Thrones and thought it was one of the best seasons in TV history. I had dropped some manga series when i started reading Silver Diamond manga apparently vol 2, Vol 4, vol 6 and vol 8 were missing i had to dropped the series same with .Hack legend of the twilight vol 2 because vol 1 was missing, same with Big adventures of majoko i read was vol 4 because the three remaining volumes were missing, as well as Rosen maiden i read was vol 3 because i sadly didn't got the the rest of the remaining volumes so i dropped the series

A lot of people picked up those Gundam hardcovers not because of their content, but because how well they were made. Afraid that they will not be able to get them later. And a lot of them did not find Gundam their thing in the end. There is 1 Gundam anime I love, and it's Gundam 00, and that's it. I honestly feel the same about thinner than usual manga volumes like Ajin, the expense really adds up, and if there are countless of other good fuul sized manga that I would rather get, I will. They could make 2in1 for these kinds of manga, so that it would be a bit cheaper than buying singles.

I’m not sure if I want to get into Goodnight Punpun just to be sad like why would you do that to yourself? One series that I might give away or just give to my brother is Demon Slayer because I think the anime is a tad bit better than the manga when it comes to the art but it might honestly change. I’m enjoying reading Demon Slayer though. The hype around it might be one of the reasons for me saying that the series is okay but definitely not the best in my manga collection

I haven’t finished the whole thing yet (I’m onto volume 15) so my take on keeping the series might or not might change when I finally finish it around August when the final volume comes out.

If you wanna give gundam the origin another shot I'd suggest checking out the anime adaptation which goes over a lot of the back story of the series. In the manga its place in the middle of series so I can understand why you could get confused about what's going on.

The thing with MSG The Origin is that it retells Gundam 0079 so it's kind of the best starting point into Gundam imo even if some things aren't really well explained like NewTypes

Goodnight Pun Pun is for emotional teenagers who have never felt anything in their life before. I couldn’t agree more that this series is overrated. This is a really interesting video, especially because I found all your points and reasons for dropping these series understandable, so even though some of these series are my favorites, I didn't feel insulted or offended like I thought I would haha. Instead, I mostly agreed with what you said, mainly because for one, I think with some of this manga (Goodnight Punpun, Blood on the Tracks) you should be in the right mindset or perspective to read them (if that makes sense lol) and also it's unnecessary to continue a series you're not into or don't enjoy as much as you'd expect, so thank you for the video! Had the same issue with ajin tbh plus it got boring after 33 chapters and Satou is a poorly written villain who’s just a bad guy for the sake of being bad and he should be entertaining at least but nope and the mc is just bland af since she’s trying to be like a deconstruction of someone who loses his humanity but failed and I heard that the last arc is bad, there’s no other way to put it, but I kinda respectfully disagree with msg: the origin and hxh (I preferred it way more than fma and fmab [even in anime form by a long shot] since gon had way better writing and character development than edward and I find Edward more annoying and unbearable in the manga and hxh just has a better well written story, arcs, characters and villains than fma/fmab) :( - the art can be sketchy with hxh sometimes, but the quality with the story, arcs and the character progression in those chapters are just 100/10 and it gets better in the dark continent/succession war arc - getting into mechs can be trouble at times and starting off the gundam franchise with the origin was a big no no for beginners but I took the risk and it became one of the few 10’s on my MAL, but mans I got thru evangelion and it became one of my fav animes of all time, if I got thru eva, I can get thru the gundam franchise overall

Finally a controversial video that’s controversial. Most people who make “controversial takes” say something like “one piece is the best manga ever” or “Darling in the franks is trash”. This is a video I can get behind. Also some manga I dropped are bleach , homunculus, one piece, and 20th century boys. I dropped them all for the same reason I let myself get persuaded into reading them under the notion they were all the best things ever created. But, I didn’t like them at all and I completely believe it was due to my exposure to those opinions, so due to that I refuse to listen to anyone’s take on a series before I consume it.

@@rizanvou I don’t know if you care but here are the more specific reasons I’ve dropped the manga: For 20th century boys I much preferred all of Urasawa’s works to it. But, I was also misled with the recommendation, so I was expecting a completely different manga than I read. For one piece the humor is just not my type and I couldn’t stand it at all. For homunculus, I hated how disgusting the manga was, so I dropped it.

totally agree on hxh, especially after where the anime leaves off, there’s a lack of quality art and it feels like the pages are stuffed with text, which usually isn’t bad, but it’s a manga, and art is like 50% like you said. still like the series, but def pretty disappointing

Yah know. Being (still) one of my favorite series', I kinda have to agree with you on that aspect of Punpun. I was expecting to be ruined, depressed for days, feeling deeply sorry for everybody involved. I read it and it didn't do that to me at all. Sure, at times I felt for some of the characters, but nothing like expected. I was told that Solanin was going to be one of Asano's more positive, light-hearted works, and Punpun being one of not only HIS, but THE most depressing manga ever created. It was the other way around with me, Solanin ruined my day(good book, either way,[both times I read it) and Punpun was more lighthearted and whimsical(?) Of a read for me. Eyyyyeee deeecay. . . Thanks for another good vitcha! :)

@@cleit1802 yeeeaaaahhhhh. . . . I'm just a weird-o, I guess. Lol. I think It's because, like with PunPun, I sat there expecting the very worst just to become the "very very" worst. Lol. But yeah, the later parts were indeed quite effed up on an entirely different level. But with Solanin, I was expecting to be happy, basically most of the way through, but sad times end up coming up too, and for me, since everything I had heard was "oh, cute, happy times, lala" I wasn't expecting another tear jerker(probably stupid though on my part, because. . . . Asano. :P) I won't get into the parts of either that gave me the feels(on either end of the "feel " spectrum, as to not spoil my soiled boil, but. TBH Solanin was so good, it ended up being the first manga I had read more than once. :)

Definitely a manga that you need to read the entire thing to truly get the full experience but I understand if you dropped it cause its very slow. And also punpuns design can throw you off, but if you can put that aside its absolutely amazing.

It all depends on the type of manga! A typical viz title like Nauto/One Piece is around $10 each. But the price really depends on the size and publisher. For example publisher, Seven Seas charges more for their volumes. And larger formats such a viz sigs or deluxe editions are more expensive :)

@hvlmanga I love your videos I was actually watching your videos before I made my very first Manga purchase this week I picked up spy Family I missed book one earlier that day but I grabbed book 2 …I also got attack on titan No regrets and some My Hero and demon Slayer …I couldn’t find all you need is kill…but I’ll definitely be looking for that and the Pokémon series… sorry you didn’t like the Resident Evil Manga the open ended ending would’ve bothered me also I played RE6 it’s an ok game can’t remember much of the story but if you ever watch the RE6 cutscenes only on KZbin I’d love to hear what part the Manga played setting up the story

I have mad respect for you and it's okay if you don't like series other people like XD. I'm actually on the verge of dropping a Manga series, I can kinda see why it didn't get printed or more anime seasons. Kenichi The Mightiest Disciple. I was so excited when I heard the manga had like 550 chapters, I'm on Chapter 340 something and it just goes on, the same recipe over and over '' Ooh new villains are in, they're stronger and they '' killl '' yet it's the same old thing even tho they're suppposedly been trained for years when they're just 17-18 yo people. So the Main Guy just knocks them out one at a time, he loses sometimes, but gets a power boost and they're off to the races again o_O. Fairy Tail was like that for a lot of people but I actually really loved Fairy Tail because they actually took time to flesh them out through the series, Acnologia is my favourite villain of FT. But with Kenichi,Idk, I'm seriously considering dropping it. I'm down but not out, there are some good parts. But just the same pattern, new villain, fight then lose, more training, fight then win, more new villains... guhhhh They shoulda focused more on Ogata, he's barely in the chapters I've seen, he's like Shanks, I wanna see more of that guy and not these new randoms. Let's hype up that guy more, but it ended so we take what we get XD. I'm also reading Quintessential Quintuplets on the side and I absolutely love it! I'm on like Volume 3. I agree with you, you have to go into a series with an open clear mind, no expectations or whatnot.
