For those wondering, the best way for your student to learn a language is what Renee is doing, only speaking English and sparingly using Korean. That is how I learnt a second language and I ended up learning fast because I didn't have the crutch of being able to speak English. I had to understand and communicate in that language. Its had but I learnt how to speak & elementary level writing in 6 months so....it works.

it looks like you are not a teacher. Using English all that time might be good but it depends on the student, if you are speaking in English and the students understands 0% you are moving no where from there. There are cases and cases, please be careful talking about individual experiences and real life teaching
@NativesofUtopia

@@Mariana-cq4vk I may not be a teacher, but I was talking about real-life experience as a student in a language school where that was the mode of teaching. The students were made up of different nationalities with different native languages (mother tongue). I learnt faster that the other students I admit, but it was a better way of learning, as most of my contemporaries could read and write eventually as well, and could carry on conversations & understand spoken language.

I was shaking my head when they said her Korean “improved”. She obviously knew Korean already, since she understood what he was saying in Korean and reacted, etc. and she was able to express what he said in Korean into English. She was obviously encouraging him to speak English and testing his true ability through immersion in the beginning, because she didn’t want him to use Korean only. But I guess they’re just saying it to be funny, since it’s a variety show. She did a great job. Patient and encouraging - important for any language teacher.

honestly this is a FOREIGN country and broadcasting program. not owned or broadcasted for america. they weren't being racist if that is what you thought. it's because it's common to korean programs to choose music related to the flow or style of the show or episode and the choose music they acutally like and enjoy. they don't choose the music with this intention of being hateful at all. they are not going to choose a random country song sung by a white person because this is a foreign country trying to showcase a black teacher and her skills so they just choose music they think is good. this whole "america and the racism problem" shouldn't be brought to other countries. when they weren't being racist at all it should just be focused in america and not blame other countries for being racist in my honest opinion. america has to fix their own racist problem first "i think" sorry if i sound offensive that isn't my intention either

not everyone is perfect i had all sorts of people (white,black, spanish) come up to me and ask if i knew "bts or gangnam style" and they even did the little bit of gangnam style dance in front of me. i just waved it off as ignorance as well because i was in new york but that is normal wherever and instead i took it friendly and smiled. we just enjoy black artists music because they are talented but sometimes don't know that in other countries it might be considered offensive when in korea playing BGM of their music is considered a respectful gesture of acknowledgment type thing 😊

@@DD81448 wow. that's ignorant your basically doing exactly what your saying when it left a bitter taste. then i would say "wow of course they would have something to say. they try to bring all their blm problems over to a different country where black peoples are almost barely seen since they r the foreigners. its korea not america. and they always make everything seem racist & r the most non understanding ignorant people ever." i actually have a lot of black friends from when i was in atlanta georgia and i thought they were super nice. way nicer then the white people but it's people like you that honestly make it hard. i've heard so many rumors that majority of blacks are rude/racist toward everyone but themselves esp when they fight for equality. thanks you opened my eyes. lol don't take an appreciative gesture the wrong way on ur own to see what you want to see & be all sensitive about it honestly

They do that because of style the culture does this for anyone who is seen as hip hop or does a hip hop gesture such as a hug it’s foreign to them they handshake or bow in America you would dap somebody or hug them regardless if it’s first time meeting or whatever they don’t do they okayed hip hop to show that this isn’t done for only black people it’s done for anyone even Koreans if they seems more westernized by showing American mannerisms such as hugs or clothes choices

@@heavenlee6464 It's still weird to me though, In the fact that she was Black didn't help. @@heavenlee6464 Ok and? Jessi is a rap/singing artist, You're giving me examples but they don't correlate because Jessi Is a rapper. This video didn't have anything to do with rap. It was a Black woman teaching a Asian man English. If it was a white woman teaching him English they wouldn't have put hip hop behind her talking. If it was a white person teaching somebody English they wouldn't have put country music behind them talking. And even if black people are portrayed as rappers that says something in itself, the internet is too fast over there for them not to notice. So you could give all the examples you want, it still doesn't sit right with me. God bless 👋🏾

@@jaylin6455 they put the song when she hugged him which is seen as western just like if she would’ve been someone white and hugged them if it seems hip hop they will put a song over it to fit what it seems like to them and I don’t get how playing rap music over a black person is seen as racist when I’m black myself it’s seen as a joke to me or a stereotype just like how people make fun of every other type of music and would play it over a person that fits that stereotype to them or seems like it

You can actually learn from subtitles! That’s how I learned, reading the subs and then paying attention to what they are saying and how they are saying it in Korean. But I’ve noticed in the past 5 or 6 years or so, subbers aren’t subbing directly from the language. When I first started watching dramas they did. For example: when someone would say “oppa! Or Sunbae!” On the screen it would show “Oppa! Or Sunbae!” And it was up to me to figure out what Oppa or Sunbae meant, and how it relates to the characters. Now they just translate it to the Pearson’s name, so there isn’t that opportunity to learn. and that’s just a small example. Sometimes things are completely translated wrongly to fit the foreigners perspective. It’s out of accommodation for foreigners, but I’ve been noticing more and more that I have to rely on subtitles because, Either I’m starting to forget somethings, or the language is evolving slightly (through slang and stuff like that) and it’s not reflecting in the subtitles. 😫 for a person that knows zero Korean people and has never been to Korea, it just means more work for me if I want to continue to understand/speak Korean.
