This seems like a good shaft to have on hand when you go into a rough bar or pool hall environment. A good shooting cue that you won't cry over when it gets knocked over or otherwise damaged.

Don't use the extra shaft since there is a small but noticeable gap between the butt and said shaft. P.S. My days of hanging in rough bars are over. lol
@mkeim23 жыл бұрын
@@xtbum3339 Any decent cue repairman with a lathe can probably fix that gap. It probably affects the "hit" and "feel". With that gap, the feel will never be consistent on different shots and will change over time.

Willy Mosconi, Cornbread Red, Minnesota Fats, Ronnie Allen, Keith McCready, Bugs Ruckert all were great pool players and none of them ever used a low-deflection shaft. Most hustlers prefer a standard hard rock maple shaft so that when they walk into a strange pool room and take a house cue from the rack, it will shoot pretty much like their own cue.

LD shafts did not exist until the mid 90's so they would not have had an opportunity to use them in the first place. Whether or not an LD shaft is better is and will always be a heated debate among players. At the end of the day if you play better with a regular shaft then good on ya but if an LD shaft makes you game better then why would you not use it? I am not a hustler and I am not promoting the art of hustling on this channel. I love this game for what it is and be the best I can be, not hustling someone for money. I attached an article, www.billiardsdigest.com/new_current_issue/apr_19/bb_index.php that ironically recently came out with regards to this and it's a good read. This debate will never die. Thanks for the comment, and thanks for watching!

Great review. My skill level is moderate, and so is my budget. I'm using a lower-end Player cue now and like it very much, but as I'm getting more daring/competent with the application of English, the shaft deflection issue is rearing it's ugly head. Your seemingly unbiased and technically sound review, along with your advice that "it's worth the money" makes me feel all that much safer in pulling the trigger on one. If my game gets to the point to where I outpace the HXT, as a secondary shaft, it evidently STILL will be in my bag. Thanks for a review well done.

Oh, by the way... I didn't even shoot my first game with the Player before I found myself removing the factory finish. I can relate 100% there.

Thanks for the positive response. The LD shaft I primarily play with is an OB pro which has an 11.75mm tip. You can get an LD shaft with a larger diameter tip which may be a good choice if you are unsure of going to a smaller tip. I will tell going to the smaller tip takes some getting used to but greatly increases what you can do with English once you are used to it. As far as LD shaft brands I have played with Players, OB, and Predator (314-3 and Z3). Out of those I do like my OB more. I hope to get my hands on a Predator Revo 12.4 shaft sometime and see what it's like.
@pickerel70156 жыл бұрын
I may take your advice about going to the smaller, 11.75mm tip. Couple questions though... I understand that it will require my tip placement on the cue ball to be more accurate, but is there any downside besides possible unwanted English being applied? Also, it appears that neither of your affiliated links offer the skinny shaft. If possible, I'd love to be able to support your channel by simply buying it from one of those, but I'm not seeing that option.
@PoolAddiction6 жыл бұрын
In my opinion, there's isn't any major downsides to having more English being applied. What you need to remember is less is more. Now I do carry a larger size tip shaft with on days I am off because tipping up when I am off will help my accuracy most of the time. I really appreciate you using the affiliate links to help support the channel however, Amazon turned off my account due to low purchasing. I am afraid I tried to become an affiliate before the channel was ready. Hopefully, I will get my affiliate account restored in the near future but until then here is a link where you can purchase one through Seyberts: www.seyberts.com/purex-hx-technology-skinny-shafts/

Thanks again for a timely and concise response. In lieu of being able to help YOU out, I have a local, mom/pop pool supplier that I like to give any business I can to. They are ordering the skinny shaft for me. As far as my question about a possible downside to a smaller tip, I kinda extrapolate from your answer about using your larger tip when you are "off" to mean that your tip-to-cue ball placement is what is suffering at that moment. Again, isn't the result of that to be applying "unwanted", or maybe better put, "inappropriate" English? I think we'd probably agree that not ALL shots require an application of English. Indeed, sometimes a very precise center-hit is just what a given shot may call for, no? Bottom line: I like your "solution" to that issue which is to have a larger diameter shaft on hand... which I WILL have once the skinny shaft comes in. :)

I owned two, the skinny and the regular. phenomenal hitting shaft feel wise, good feedback. for the price, with a good tip, youll need no other shaft. its a matter of learning one shaft and cue, with a tip you prefer. Ive shot (not owned except for a few) with all the major cue makers including an original balabushka thanks to Pete Jr, also a few TS, Nitti ( owned a sneaky pete, this guy shoots with a nitti I think), carmeli, barenbrugge, hercek, sugartree, Rat, and so many other cues including all production cues, at the end of the day, its all a matter of you liking your cue. Ive spent thousands of dollars, trying everything in sight, and outside of workmanship and the feel of a cue from a custom cue maker, the best thing to do is to stick with one cue. I regret selling a few of them off because of the quality of work, but I agree with this guy, for $124 this is nothing to be ashamed about owning.

ULD or LD is not the same when you try them on different cues and different tables. I remember a cue (Mezz+WD700) at a club played by a college and loved it...before I had predator...the problem was the transfer between the tables and conditions. And when I played the Mezz I was like...wow...I couldn´t miss a shot...I couldn´t believe it...even uncomfortable shots were so easy when I played with that cue...after all I bought it...but what I realized is...the next weeks and months it was only that day and that table at that time I was playing like never before...I realized as well, that the were shots which were impossible to play with that cue...so I changed back to 314. Sometimes you feel it and sometimes you don´t. But at the end of the day you should be one by one with the whole cue, not only the shaft or what so ever...I played 314 and 314-2 and there is no difference for me at all. And I played a house cues and made 146 in pool snooker with it...so it´s not always the material, but the understanding of the game process.
@PoolAddiction6 жыл бұрын
Thank you for comment on your experiences. I agree that you have to understand the game process and all of the other environmentals involved (i.e. table/cloth conditions, ball type/condition, the cue itself mainly the joint type, etc.). Even the person themselves have differences that may affect play. I normally play on Diamond (7 and 9 ft), Valley Bar, and Gold Crown tables and there are differences on each table and that's a part of the game, as you describe, that you have to figure out in your game. My first LD shaft was a Predator and I thought it was great but my OB, for me, is much better with aim and feel. The HXT Skinny was a temporary budget shaft I decided to try instead of buying another higher end shaft and for the money, it performed well. I notice a very distinct difference between a normal shaft vs an LD shaft as well as a normal (13-12.75mm) tip vs a smaller tip (11.75mm) and that's no matter what cue butt I use. The main thing one must decide though is whether they like the difference between a normal or LD shaft and there are many that don't like it. At the end of the day you are right your game is a lot more than just your equipment and you have practice and hone your skills to become better but as you progress you should try some other equipment from time to time to see that equipment fits your skills better than what you are currently using, that's just my opinion. I love discussing things like this with other players so thanks again for contributing to the discussion. Cheers!

Alexey Pavlov the WD or WX700 is Mezz’s highest LD Shaft that they make. HP2, WX900, and ExPro are much lower deflection shafts. The WX700 plays like a stiff version of the 314 IMO. The ExPro(12.5) is similar to the Z2(11.75) and Revo(12.4). I didn’t at all care for the 314(12.75) as I had a 314 cat and the deflection was just too much for me. But some players like that deflection and you can learn just about any shaft. Just depends on the individual. There is no right or wrong answer to what shaft an individual should play. With a shaft, deflection yes is important but like the guy says in this video, feedback - hit - feel/response - taper are just as important.

Yeah, beginners really shouldn't be using an 11.75mm shaft. The basic rule with tip diameters is bigger gives you a larger margin of error with shot-making but less ability to use english whereas a smaller tip does the opposite. First of all, I would really like to thank you for your efforts that is put into this channel. Secondly, I would like to seek your advice into if I should get the 12.75 or the 11.75! I am lost! I understand the 11.75 will allow me to put more spin yet do I actually need that much of a difference down from a 12.75. I have never owned a cue in my life and have been playing with shitty house cues for over 3 years.
@PoolAddiction3 жыл бұрын
In my opinion if you're still kind of new to the game I would say the 12.75 is the best way to go until get more experience. I started with a 13 and progressed down to a 12.75 pretty quick, 13 always felt too big for me. I played a while before I moved to an 11.75 mainly due to comfort and ability. It was a little bit of a learning curve when I first moved down to the 11.75 but for me, I felt it was worth it. Getting back to the point, If you are getting your first cue, I would go a little bigger. If you’re still unsure between the two then may be try an 12.5, it's in the middle and I think it does fit players that have played awhile but still don't feel comfortable moving all the way down to an 11.75. The general rule of thumb is a bigger tip gives a greater margin of error (helps to make the shot) than a smaller tip (you have to be more accurate with where you strike the cue ball). I hope the helps and thanks for watching!

Great review. I've recently got the cue, and the thing I noticed soon is that the shaft finish wore off kinda quickly, the shiny top layer. It wore off approximately to the point where the bridge hand gets during the stroke. I guess it's a normal thing to happen, but I do notice that the shaft is not as slick any more, feels kinda woody. I don't mind that, i play with a glove and have no problems, but I'd like to know if the same thing happened to you, did it wore off after a while, and how does it feel after you got it abrazed with sand paper... Thanks !
@PoolAddiction3 жыл бұрын
The finish felt rough when I first got it. I had to do a light sanding with the sanding burnishing papers, cleaned, and resealed it. It felt much better after that. If you have a cue maintenance guy around you, I’d suggest taking to him and he he can do a clean, reseal. They will put a slick wax on it and it will be smooth as glass.
@chuckki11a3 жыл бұрын
@@PoolAddiction Thanx for the answer. In my case it was the opposite, when i first bought it it felt unnaturally slick, but now it has more wooden feel which i actually prefer, though it would be nice for it to slide more smoothly. Unfortunatly i have no maintenance guy around, so i will probably get it shipped. Keep up the good work, love your videos !! Cheers

Any chance you could give me some advise on OB shafts. I’m considering purchasing the Phoenix at only $250. I’ve never played OB. I’m looking to upgrade from my current shaft. Any thoughts? I thought I would ask since you have experience w OB. Any help would be appreciated. Thx
@PoolAddiction3 жыл бұрын
OB used to be a really great shaft but the quality has really gone downhill over the 8 or 9 years from what I hear. I believe they filed for bankruptcy or something a few years ago because of financial issues. They do honor their lifetime warranties, however, it does take some time to get your shaft back. My personal experience wasn't all that great. When I got my shaft back, they sent me the wrong shaft back first and when I got mine back, the finish was messed up. While I have experience with kielwood shafts, I have not tried the Phoenix shaft. Kielwwod is a great alternative to carbon fiber shafts and I really like my Hsunami. I do hope to try a Phoenix one of these days. They are decently priced too. Would I give OB another chance sometime? Sure, because I remember how good they were and I would like to give them another chance. I hope that helps and thanks for the comment and watching!

Nice review. I mainly came here to find more info on the Players brand pool sticks. A relative of mine has one and only used it several times and was going to sell it to me for $50 because she rarely plays. I can't find nothing about the one she has online. All I know it has (P Players and 1508) around it's base. I don't play professionally and I only play every now and then but was tired of using the cheap and warped pool sticks that pool halls provide for people that don't have pool sticks. So do you think it would be a good stick for someone like me that plays only occasionally?
@PoolAddiction5 жыл бұрын
Thank you for the complement and I am glad you enjoyed the video. Do you have any pics of it and how old it is? On the surface $50 sounds fair if it's in really good condition. Players cues have a lot of cues models over the years plus there are hard to find information on them if they are older models as you have experienced. It's awesome that you are getting a little more into the game. I love it, as you can tell, and my hope with this channel is to get more people involved in the game and help it grow. Thanks for watching!

@@PoolAddiction I don't have any pictures of it. I can take some if you want to see what it looks like an a way I can send them to you? I don't know it's age but it has been in its case and sitting in my sister's garage for maybe a couple years. My niece was getting some of her stuff out that she left here when it moved but she might have had it longer than that. I think her friend she played pool with got it for her. She said she thinks they paid $150 for it but the only ones I see online that look close to this one are around the $90 range. The condition of it looks great to me. First thing I did was put it together and did the whole look down the whole stick and did the old rotation turning to see if the shaft was warped. It looked straight as an arrow as far as I can tell. The shaft does have It's normal wear from being used because about 10ish inches up from where the shaft connects the smooth glaze finish has been slightly worn off and the tip has it's normal used look but it's not bad. The wrap looks like a black threading twine. the design on it is a dark royal purple wood grain look. The bumper cup an collared are stainless steel. I don't play often. Mainly just recreational fun here an there with a friend or family member.
@PoolAddiction5 жыл бұрын
You can send pics to me at pooladdiction13@gmail.com if you like but it's not a big deal though. Players cues range from around $70ish to around $200ish I believe. It sounds like this cue maybe one of the more basic ones which would've been $60 to $120 range new. I am not a huge expert on Players cue pricing but $50 sounds like an Ok price if it's not warped, the wrap is in good condition and there's no finish issues. The best way to check how straight the cue is is to find a flat surface (I prefer a pool table) and roll the shaft and butt across the surface separately. Next put the cue together and roll check it again. When you are rolling across the surface, get down low and look at the contact between the surface and the cue to see any daylight. You also want check the condition of the tip. Lastly, play with it and see if the cue feels good to you. All in all if I were in your position I would offer a little less and see if they will take it. Hope this helps you.

@@PoolAddiction I may take a picture of it tomorrow when it's sunny because inside lighting through a phone camera never looks good or bright enough. I was also going to do the rolling it across a flat surface but I wanted to find a big enough surface to try it on. May have to wait till I go play pool to do so.

There’s a little bit of vibration sometimes with the hit. It’s a little more than other LD shafts but it’s not horrible. I wanted to note it since I experienced it. I’d say it happened less than 5% of the time. It’s a good shaft for the price and even though I play with different shafts now, the HXT is still one of my favorite wood LD shafts. @@PoolAddiction ...For this to have increased in cost by 40% in the ensuing 4 years is a bit much for just inflation alone. I think that their bill of materials costs have increased to also push the price higher. I heard that wood became much more expensive to buy in this time period, and the gulf between itself and carbon fiber shafts being ~$400 was so large that they could easily bump up the price and still remain competitive. Point of aim will be closer to "true" with a LD shaft but you still have to compensate. A LD shaft will squirt (it's called a LD shaft not a no deflection shaft) not only that but when you hit the cue ball off center it throws the object ball. And yes, this also happens with a LD shaft. It just kills me to see so many videos where people are saying you don't have to compensate for squirt with a LD shaft. LD shafts are mainly for beginner and intermediate pool players in my opinion.
@PoolAddiction6 жыл бұрын
Thanks John, you are right I should’ve explained it a little better on the squirt with an LD shaft....it’s not a ZD shaft. As far as a LD shaft shaft being good or bad, that’s a heavily debated thing with players in the end everyone has what they like and whatever works for you great. I understand respect your opinion of LD shafts being for beginners and intermediate players however, ever since the Revo and other carbon fiber shafts have come out there has been a big movement within the pro community switching so I would say that it’s not just beginners and intermediate players that see the advantages of using an LD shaft. Again thank you for the feedback, I really appreciate it.

In the meantime here are soem directions on using the products that are in the links above which are pretty much the same stuff. Use the dry cleaner per the directions first. Next use the burnishing papers (the most course down to the finest). Then I use the dry cleaner again. Once that is done I use the conditioner (the big bottle) per the directions. Lastly the small dropper bottle is last per the directions. Hope that helps you. If you have any quetions just let me know.
@BladeRunner-td8be4 жыл бұрын
Save possibly one or two shots every shot was a dead center hit. And those one or two shots where you may have either intentionally or unintentionally hit off center to spin the ball, it wasn't much spin. I mean I like your video because you are sharing a new product with us but a LD shaft review needs pool shots where you hit off center, way off center even to actually see how much the cue ball deflects after impact. Anyway don't let this get you down I can tell you love this game just like I do. Cheers, J. Noe
@PoolAddiction4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the feedback. This was my first attempt at a review and probably should've done a few things differently to show off the product. Being new to doing an on camera review I had a hard time thinking what type of shots to use and I definitely should do more extreme off center hits to show the amount of deflection. To help correct this, I will be doing a direct comparison to all the other shafts I have reviewed so far, it will be a 2 part video and it will be a bit more in depth. Hopefully you check that one out when I finish it. I am hoping to have them out by the end of June to beginning of July. Thanks for watching!

It kind of depends on your budget. a)For a beginner on a budget (less than $100USD) I would say Players, Dufferin, and PureX (made by Players). b) If you can afford a little more ($100-$300 USD) look at McDermott, Joss, Lucasi, Jacoby, and Viking. I would not invest any more money until you know you like the game, but the next level after that you will see a big difference. Those brands are Predator, Schon, and Mezz. You will see a good difference between the levels of cues. I don't recommend getting an LD shaft right away either. They are more expensive and tend to be harder to use when you are first learning. Hope that helps you and welcome to the game. I hope you really enjoy playing!

I think the Star line and the Pure X HXT line are pretty much the same level. McDermott has been making cues for a long time, they are well respected and the cues come with a lifetime guarantee. The Pure X are essentially made by Players and are not as reputable. Also, I am not sure if the Pure X cues have a lifetime guarantee. That being said the HXT line is really good for the price. Another thing to consider is joint type. McDermotts are a 3/8 x 10 wood joint whereas the HXT 5/16 x 18 metal joint. Me personally, I like a wood joint and a 3/8 x 10 joint pin is a decent pin.
