Different but similar explanation: Close up, our eyes see all the frequencies of an image: high frequencies (e.g. white noise) and low frequencies (e.g. big blobs). From far away, our eyes' angular resolution drops, acting like a low-pass filter, making us only see the low frequencies (the blobs).

that is fairly accurate.... it's like, us the viewers are the teachers/tutors and michael is a student, we love his work, we enjoy his output.... but a few years go by and he's hanging around with a different crowd, reducing his output but still being somewhat adorable for it. he's not wrong, but he could do better, but he's not failing either.... however, this being the second video, being almost twice as long, maybe the third will be 2 minutes long if it doubles the video before it, or one minute thirty if it's a total sum for 30-ish second long videos.

I learned an awesome drawing technique for realism that’s based on that. Instead of looking at your reference and contouring their local features, you map out the global features first and sketch/paint using shadows. The details will come in last to bring definition. This did me wonders, drawing noses or both eyes was never a problem for me anymore, because I didn’t focus on just one detail, finished drawing it, then went to the next, and so on. I recommend anyone who hasn’t tried to give it a go

That's awesome! I just took a class on digital image processing, and we refer to the "local features" as the high frequency component and "global features" as the low frequency component. The Fourier Transform is used all over the place in image processing to separate/manipulate the high or low frequency components of an image
