I am glad you addressed the safety concerns of planting near the house. These are great trees with so many uses. They do have some medicinal value, but willow is a much better source, and you have that. For keeping a house cool, I think there are much better options than trees. Solar attic fans are excellent. Ground cooling pipes fed by solar powered fans are great, and earth sheltering and insulated shades are great.

@Resist.Tyranny the willow are great just provide less shade. All those options are great too for cooling homes but in my opinion shade is king. I plan on using a solar fans as well. Great advice.

Nice! I just planted a ton of populus deltoides around my place. Some hit about eight feet their first season! Amazing trees.

Same here in AZ...P fremontii grew about 20 feet i n 2 seasons. Plus, the true species have longer life spans than hybrid poplar.

Thanks, this was quite informative about the hybrid poplar

Finally found someone who would ship me a set of OP367 cuttings. Really excited to get a few of these going, see how much firewood/biochar feed I can use them to squeeze out of the little bit of space I've got for the purpose.

Would love to see updates as they grow!

This winter I am going to be taking cuttings off of my poplars and willows showing the seasons growth. The Hybrid Poplars are really fast growing and I have some willows that have put on 12 feet of growth this year.

I've heard/read that these are notorious for getting into septic systems as the roots aggressively seek out water. What are your thoughts/experience? Would that be a concern with placing it as close to 10 feet from the house?
@HydeawayHomestead Жыл бұрын
Good point. You are right to be concerned with that. Poplars are notorious for soaking up tons of water. That being said all trees will search for water. I would steer clear of septic tanks but around the sides of the house that are not near the septic tank would be fine. Thanks for the question! Hope that I answered it adequately.

Absolutely, thanks for the response!

If growing for biomass what is the plant spacing and at what point would you begin to coppice....
@HydeawayHomestead11 ай бұрын
I like planting 5 feet apart so you can walk easily in between the trees. You can coppice as early as the first year but is better to wait til the second or third year.

What size should your dormant cuttings be?
@HydeawayHomestead7 ай бұрын
I like 6 to 12 inches. That seems to give me the most success. You can do smaller or larger too. You just may not have all of them root.

Hi, so from what I've found on the internet these are a natural hybrid also known as populus canadensis right? I have one question, are these guys resistant to drought?
@HydeawayHomestead Жыл бұрын
Yes they are hybrid. They were made by crossing two species naturally. Not gmo (genetically modified organism) which is genetic code put into an organism by virus or gene gun. They do ok in dry weather but can suffer if drought is extended over a couple of months. They do best in wet areas.

Thanks, I've been seeing a lot of poplars growing where I live and they have all the characteristics of these ones, there has been a drought for the whole summer and they haven't lost a leaf. I wasn't sure it was populus canadensis.@@HydeawayHomestead

They may be another poplar species but the will still be awesome trees. They just may not grow as fast. In February it will be a great time to take some cuttings and make some clones.

I will buy a few populus canadensis to test them out, they are really cheap .@@HydeawayHomestead

Is it harder than eucalyptus and how much does it weigh after 5 years?
@HydeawayHomestead10 ай бұрын
I would say it's not harder that eucalyptus. As far as weight goes It would depend. A 5 year old tree will be around 30 to 40 ft tall and have a 4 to 6 inch trunk diameter.

Thank you I will. I've never looked at their medicinal properties.
