Years ago (about seven years ago) I installed a military grade Maxwell Super Cap pack on my Suzuki Vitara 2.0. I was able to run it all over town for a month using just the super cap with no batteries. I had a booster with me just in case but the super cap could maintain its charge over night and could start the car the next morning. This was just a test so I had to be very careful not to leave the radio on or anything that could drain the caps! I then added an RC small battery to keep it charged and later a small 12 volts dry cell alarm battery. I am still running this super cap and just I just drove today over sixty miles. I purchased a second cap bank but is a cheaper brand and it drains really fast on its own so I have used it for years on my lawnmower, I just jump it, do the work and I don't have to keep buying batteries every summer!

@truckywuckyuwu2 ай бұрын
They're not quite there yet. The energy density is still really low, but we are making strides in it. Even if they only had a quarter the energy density, the charge time is very quick. And would likely replace them at that point. We have graphene super caps now. Big step up. Feels like a hybrid system would work. Super caps and then a battery bank for longer trips. Would allow you to have way less batteries, and they'd last longer too because most trips would just use the super caps. We are very close to a lot of things that will help. Sodium batteries too. Solar panels are getting quite efficient as well.

Don't use electrical tape on that positive jumper - use Rubber Tape! The package will say 'self fusing silicone' or 'self vulcanizing', and it's Not Sticky - except to itself. Much better insulation and it'll take more abuse than most electrical tape. Heat will eventually make regular electrical tape brittle and destroy the adhesive.

My 15 Soul+ doesn't eat batteries like this (although, your wife's appeara to be a Soul! Given the headlights, which also means she probably has the subwoofer and amp) You might consider testing each circuit for a ground fault, as well as check the alternator. Mine has had 2 batteries over it's life, and I know the previous owner had it somehow starting with an extremely loose connection (like, the nut was flick-spinable) and it was causing a traction control fault light of all things as the only symptom. You've given me something to think about when this one eventually dies for sure!

Very interesting series, I've been binging all the videos. I am wondering whether you are concerned about degradation from high temperatures in the engine bay? Considering LiFePO4 seems to be rather sensitive to temps over 60C. I understand some companies specifically sell more expensive "under-the-bonnet" rated LiFePO4 batteries for this purpose.

That's cool, I'm thinking about getting a Chinese 16v100F assembly and sticking it in my car. But wouldn't it overheat in summer? These caps are usually rated up to 60 C, and their lifetime gets much lower as the temp rises. By orders of magnitude, in fact.

Thanks for the great info! Anyway these caps could be used to power an inverter for backup home power during a power blackout with or without a lifepo4 battery?
@RaymondLohengrin9 ай бұрын
I have been using super caps for years now. Super Caps have very little storage milli amp, a 120 milli Amps (not even an amp capacity) can however start your car, they just deliver a tremendous punch of power but you will need an actual battery to keep whatever you want running for a while unless you have numerous super caps in parallel to build up storage capacity. To power your inverter a bank of Lifep04 batteries will be best and no need for a super cap.

@bhartley1024 Жыл бұрын
I've been thinking of making a system like yours, but I'm worried about the alternator overcharging the LiFePO4 and the BMS disconnecting it from the system, allowing the alternator output to spike when the battery load is removed. I guess this wouldn't be an issue if the supercap is always in-circuit, but I can't be sure of that.
@markmroz Жыл бұрын
I would think that it should be okay as SLAs charge at a lower voltage then LiFePO4. You definitely need a resistor to limit the in/out current on the battery. I’m using a 60W halogen bulb as a current limiter because my resistors kept burning up.
@truckywuckyuwu2 ай бұрын
I did this on my vehicle. Except, instead of using a small battery. I have a long thin solar panel in my window. It keeps the caps topped up and ready for use. I have a backup way to charge too if i need it. Just a cable that plugs into a phone or powerbank. Only had to use it once. The caps i have keep a charge for a fair while. Only time i had to use it was after the vehicle had been sitting a week with a few inches of snow on it. I ran the cable inside the car and can just plug in there. No need to even open the hood. There are lots of ways to to charge these too. Inside a garage you can just have a wall wart adapter or even a uab charger. Or a battery tender. Only really necessary when they sit for a long time. But even if it did die out, you have so many ways to charge the caps, especially if you have a bit of electrical know how. Could be just as simple as flipping a switch inside your house 3 minutes before you leave if you can figure it out. They dont need high current to charge. Even a trickle of electricity over a few hours can do it.
@CAR-AUDIO-PRO7 ай бұрын
Not sure if you tried to open up the Ioxus, but if you didn't and to anyone else thinking of doing it. Don't do it. You will never get to capacitors. Under the grey case the capacitors are encased in plastic. If you look at the bottom of the case, you will see the holes where the case was filled with the plastic. It is impossible to break the plastic around the Caps.

So I bought one of these UltraCaps to disassemble and use the caps for my own custom build. Well, I had to use a chisel and hammer to get the gray exterior casing off and found that the inside was completely injected with polypropylene; solid. I kept chiseling to try to get at the caps, but felt like I was nicking them too much, so I gave up. I guess I'll just have to use the UltraCap as is, or find a different method to disassemble.

@markmroz10 ай бұрын
@@Pivot_Media_TVThe one in my LR4 was causing it to throw codes like crazy, mostly related to transmission. I spoke with IOXUS and they told me that first gen of UltraCap had a boost/buck convertert that emitted high amounts of EMI. My guess is that this was interfering with the ECU, which is directly behind the battery. I purchased 6 bare IOXUS 3000F ultracaps ($30.53/ea) and bussed them in series and now everything works so good. Like Mad did with his previous build, I don't use any balancing, because the nominal voltage of the pack is 16.2V, and the charge curve is linear, so all the caps should stay safe. At some point I'd like to get at the capacitors inside the UltraCap module. I was thinking of trying to melt the plastic or use a wire brush wheel. I don't care about the electronics, just the capacitors themselves.

Lead acid batteries use lead paste in the plates in a grid...due to heat/vibration the batteries (ALL lead acid batteries) the plates will sufate and degrade and dissintegrate, the sludge falls to the bottom of the battery and ends up shorting out or loweing the CCA...this is why the much much higher dollar lead acid batteries use AGM (glass matting) to keep the substrate in the plates...but those too eventual sulfate up and wear out
