Cornell Professor Doug Antczak delivers the Reunion lecture celebrating Cornell University Library's exhibition "Animal Legends." Dr. Antczak explores the relationship between humans and animals in the context of selective breeding and genetic engineering, explaining how these processes have put evolution on 'fast forward' for several domesticated species, and how they are thus bringing Myth closer to Reality, and vice versa.

A ringneck dove, Streptopelia risoria, can breed with a common pigeon, Columba livia. Note that these are not even the same genus. My male pigeon mated with a hen ringneck, and had several offspring. I have seen, in the wild, another bird that appeared to be a hybrid of the same two species, but a different combination of traits, so that I suspect a male ringneck dove mated with a female common pigeon. My hybids never laid eggs, so I suspect they were infertile.

You'd be quite surprised on how many different types of animals are actually able to create hybrids.... And you don't have to be a rich person to create a hybrid nor do you have to be super educated in gene splicing or editing or anything like that you just got to have an animal that's close enough related to the other species and there's quite a few animals and creatures in this world that can be hybridize even if nobody's done it on paperwork. Like for instance the shrew a small rat and mouse like animal that looks like a pointy nose mouse or rat and it also looks like a mole. I don't know of anybody else out there that been cross-breeding shrews but you can successfully hybridize different species of shrews enough things matchup in them the only problem is it creates a lower birth rate less fertility but that can be completely fixed with selective breeding between different species and a little bit of going back and adding more of a specific one into the mix. Like you can take a water shrew and you can hybridize it with the very few but you can mix it with certain ones and it will sometimes give you the result of a waterproof coat or less of waterproof coat on the shrew but it's all about mixing and matching. Although I have to say some of the results from the hybridization process does create a more invasive hybridized version of a shrew which is not exactly good for the Wildlife if it was introduced accidentally or intentionally into the environment. If you're playing doctor Monroe and if you're a movie fan you'll know what I'm talking about. He'll even poison dart frogs can be hybridized in quite a few ways and completely successful without a low birth rate. But I'll stick to the Shrew for now. Note it's not as complex as what most people think when it comes to hybridize being species that are closely related or semi related there are some problems that do arise within The Offspring but once again through selective breeding between species you can over-ride that problem. I look forward to the future especially with more and more research like this getting out there. Now notes different species will not mate normally or naturally with each other an artificial circumstances have to be created to create certain hybrids. And not all of these methods are humane. Oh what a world we live in nowadays.......
