A couple heads ups: When you get the shay, it's got airbrakes that can stop the rotation of the sun around it's axis around the sun Also, the shay can easily pull the universe and keep it in check (I trialed her with 35 empty boxcars and she moved them no problem) With Rails, make sure you keep the cars as centered as you can with the loading crane as it loads otherwise you're going to have a one side balance car. In short, when it loads, it loads one side first and then the other side. Make sure if you are going to have a one side loaded flatcar, keep the loaded side coupled to the rest of the loaded cars or there goes the link, pin and link pocket. One other thing to keep in mind is when you start getting up there in production and have to have tons of cars, make sure you have sidings for cars originating from the various industries. For example-have sidings at the ironworks for the boxcars and flatcars for the pipes as well as sidings for the inbound cars of lumber, coal and Raw Iron so that way they can be sent back out with the cars and drop them off at the sidings near the junctions to the coal mine, sawmill and smelters yards. And the last thing-as a protectionary measure, try to have at least one caboose per industry, so that way trains can run out without having to worry about losing your tail on the open road and that lost tail surprises an engine coming up with a new delivery.

Y'know... for a long time I've heard two-cylinder steam locomotives telling me "Do not poop upon the bird now" as they chuffed (due to an ancient video on here of a parrot named Santos who insisted his owner not to poop on him). BNSF 1676 might not have been talking about poop, but it sure was manifesting it.

So, in the spirit of being efficient with road time, the smelter can hold 12 1/2 cars of cord wood. The way I have mine set up I can bring in the first set in as 4 cars to off load, and after I empty the first car, I cut it off and then load the other 9 cars after using the first car as a bumper gage. I also have a small shunt yard near the cord wood drop off that can just hold the 12 cars, that can then be swapped without blocking any interference of the loaded cars. Full time to drop off all 13 cars is about 20 minutes using a Porter 2.

Speaking of the impact of water from the water tank Buster Keaton once did a stunt where he jumped onto a moving train car then jumped off by using the water tank spout and the flow of water knocked him to the ground. You see him get up and continue the scene. He had a terrible pain in the neck. Visited his friend later for a stiff drink or two (this was during prohibition) she wanted him to see a doctor. Years later his doctor said, so when did you break your neck? Turns out the water slammed him so hard to the ground it did break his neck. He's my favorite comedian from that era. He even made a decent transition to the talkies. He loved trains and used them in stunts throughout his movie career including his famous scene of him riding the rod as the train enters a tunnel (The General).

Hey Hyce, since you started the video talking about Bernouli's principle and such, I figured now was a great point to tell you that that is also exactly how the wing of an aeroplane works. The diagram with flows you showed on screen is a venturi, if you look at the cross section of a standard aircraft wing you'll note the top surface of the wing is shaped something like the bottom half of that venturi, while the bottom surface of the wing is basically flat. That means air travels faster over the top of the wing than under it, hence, a you get a pressure differential between the top and bottom of the wing, and like magic you know have a force pushing upward on that wing surface. The one notable exception to the rule is hardcore aerobatic aircraft, they use symmetrical wings, since they spend as much time flying upside down as right side up. It's not as efficient as using a Bernoulli wing, but if you've ever tried sticking your hand out of a car window at speed and played around changing the angle of your hand to the oncoming air, you've experienced how a symmetrical wing works. Anyways, just thought that was an interesting point, and cool to see how one principle can apply in such seemingly different areas. (I'm assuming there's no such thing as a flying train at least LOL)

I worked Volkswagen for a while. We were 48 seconds per, at full speed. But that being said, we were hardly ever at full speed. And i loved the incomplete cars that rolled past. Car missing the back window, and I'm supposed to install the wiper? All the parts just get tossed in the body. At Volkswagen, we were technically an enclave of Germany (officially a foreign trade zone operated by Germany inside the US [a German port in the US effectively]). An employee once committed a crime, and then fleed to work. A German ambassador had to be called to get the local police permission to come on site to retrieve the employee.

I do love watching and listening to these episodes on the side while playing some Railroads Online! myself, especially when you talk about such pleasant things like engine poop. Off that topic, two days ago I bought a new engine, the Heissler, and it has my favourite whistle of all the engines I do have. I don't know words that are correct, so I'm just gonna describe it as raspy. It sounds like the metal that's vibrating to produce the sound is barely holding on sort of creates this dissonant unclean honk and it's amazing.

By the way, when kAN questions the logic of "this smells awful, gonna poop"... rather have somewhere to poop even if you might need a gas mask than have nowhere to do so Also this raises the inevitable question of "hump yard engines' toilets are insanely smelly" Also also when kAN's story gets to the complication (literature class terms, never thought I'd use them but here I am), Battle Hymn of the Republic starts playing right as he starts going into detail which is funny imo

I noticed a happy coincidence with this 2-6-0's name, because I was at the Glenbrook Vintage Railway yesterday (underline 'Glenbrook'). They had a 4-6-4 tank engine from 1910 in steam, as well as a vintage diesel (DE 507) at the workshop. I'm looking at trying the Glenbrook locomotive myself, but I'd probably have to reduce the sharpness of some curves because the wheelbase looks really long to me.

Additional context for those in comment land. @3:30 ABAQUS CAE is a finite element analysis software that does computational fluid dynamics, hence why kAN brings it up during the Bernoulli part of the video. Currently the software is maintained and upgraded by Dassault Systemes of SOLIDWORKS fame. @46:51 Nitrogen scrubbing and generation is a hugely interesting topic, and the description given by kAN is a bit of a simplification but does a great job of introducing why the topic is important. If you didn't watch this section, I recommend it; having worked on air purification systems myself and used lots of UHP 99.999% pure Nitrogen gas I get where kAN was coming from. Air composition and purity is an often overlooked topic when most people care about "just wanting compressed air." (Although, if you're running a locomotive and the compressor goes out, you really could just want compressed air, no matter the composition)

Hyde, you had @kAN do your introduction again, guess that was his punishment for pre-showing the Glennbrook/Tahoe.

Fun story about mechanical pumps on locos: A class of shunters in the Uk, the LBSC A1 “Terriers” were delivered with only axle driven pumps for water. And it was a common sight before they had injectors fitted to see them scuttling back and forth on a yard siding to fill the boiler

Funny story involving the name C R A P. A while ago I was looking into starting a car club with a few of my buddies and we couldn’t decide on a name. So I came up with CRAP which stood for “Crumby rides, Awful people” never really took off sadly but a fun story I wanted to share
