14:18, I think an easy way to visualize this is putting your thumb on the open end of a running hose, the same amount of water wants to go through a smaller opening.

So I got another fun story. The town I live in was founded in 1788 so it ended up having some railroad infrastructure that you can still see remnants of today. We still have our old train station that was a farmers market but now a museum, we have some industries set up by then tracks (or where some of them were), and we have this old maintenance shed for the locomotives. Most of it has been renovated through out the years. Once used as a satellite campus for a local college. But the preserved part of it where the maintenance was actually done. You can see these big wooden beams that are stained black from the locomotives being in there. It's quite cool.

Some of you might wonder why the Colorado Midland bought 25 locomotives. The answer is probably backshopping. I think the number is about 30% of steam locomotives were backstopped at any given time getting wear parts replaced and such. Steam locomotives are labor intensive to maintain because they have to be stripped for major repairs, unlike the somewhat interchangeable main components of a diesel electric locomotive.

I’m glad you guys decided to revisit this game, you both sound like you’re having a great time messing around here. As far as I can tell, the only Canadian railroad terminology I picked up while there was using “nought” instead of zero when talking on the radio. It doesn’t even make sense, because trying to tell someone it’s 0630 ends up sounding like its “not 6:30” and that’s just confusing!
@157RANDOM
@157RANDOM Жыл бұрын
You get used to it. For example if the RTC asks what your 12th hour is you would say "six thirty, nought-six-three-nought" since you have to say the number then repeat with individual digits. I can see how it'd be confusing from an outside perspective.

I've got a 2% run to the iron mine, the 2% starts at the sawmill, turns on a bridge over the smelter access gap and runs up the freight depot side of the ridge, then nearly flat to the iron mine after going thru the gap 6 cars of beams, and split the lumber into 2 3 car lumber cars - easy runs with betsy...

All a nozzle does is help keep pressure. It would be like kinking or putting your thimb over the end of a garden hose and using that to make the water go further with minimal loss. As compared to just having a big open hole like a pipe in an attempt to launch the water.

It was a rough day on my route the Eagle River Southern. I had a couple of incidents; one of which led to a flatcar being overturned. Incident 1. It started out as a fairly normal session. I had just finished restocking the sawmill with logs and was back at the freight lard storing my empty flats with my Montezuma the Sparrow. That's when I had my first incident. I had noticed that the switch was still aligned for my yard loop instead of the siding. I then tried to powerbrake the train and pull it back through the switch. For some reason this caused the flatcar flip off the track and land upside down. The only things that I can think of that may have caused it were either my car glitched into the switch or I pulled the car off the track when I powerbraked. Incident 2. Shortly after I hopped in my Glenbrook the Crow to take a train of empty flats to the sawmill where they would then be loaded and taken to the iron mine. I started up the locomotive ,set the reg. to 30%, then jumped off to realign the switch after pulling from the siding. After realigning the switch I attempted to make it back to the train, but it was moving to fast. I now had a fully fueled train with 6 flatcars and a waycar barreling down my mainline. Thankfully I was able to catch it near the sawmill when it slowed as it reached the 3.5% grade heading up to the iron mine. If my mainline had been aligned for the smelter route it would have gone down a 3% grade with two 30 meter curves, and it almost certainly would have wrecked.

Actually most of the British drivers, even to this day, are trained on how to repair minor faults with any rolling stock they drive, to keep trains moving. But there was never any need to train them on huge repairs, since only a handful of lines ever ran more than a couple of hours from a maintenance yard. Any train that broke down could normally be retrieved within the same day. There was never really any need for complex repairs except at yards.

The steeped (standard gauge) climb in the UK was the Lickey Incline, at 2.65%. It’s such a incline, that a 0-10-0 engine nicknamed “Big Bertha” was built specifically to be its permanent banker (or helper). Even with Big Bertha, there still had to also be 4 tank engines assigned to the hill at all times to also act as bankers/helpers. The crazy thing is; not only is that bit of track still around, but it’s still in service as part of a major main line! Trains still even need banker/helper engines for it! In 2022!

WELL: going to the mine you COULD do what the old Buffalo and Susquehanna did every DAY in western PA to run coal drags on its main line...instead of a tunnel(which they deffered due to cost, and it was ORIGAINLLY a pure logging line repuropsed into a "main line"..), they used a 4 tier switchback up EACH side of a mountain with a 130 car yard on the TOP of the mountain. One (beefy std gauge) 2-8-o dragging 6-8 cars UP, dump at the top, go back for another cut, then go DOWN 6-8 cars at a time till a 30 to 50 car coal drag was pulled over the mountain...Gee, I wonder WHY they built everything around 1905, and were bankrupt by 1917.....

Any chance we could see Push/Pull operations with the Class 48 to the iron mine? Always wanted to see how that would go and with the space restraints at the iron mine making a turnaround loop a hassle, I think a Push/Pull setup would work well! Especially as the Class 48 is quite strong so I don’t believe it would struggle too much.

They will regularly run small freight consists for Railfans and historians alike, as well as passenger trips up and down the short trackage. But actually being there and experiencing freight scenarios was definitely something else. Ill be volunteering for them again soon and hopefully I'll get the chance to get some footage of this. In my own playthrough I just built up to the iron mine, went for 2% all the way up with no more than a 35 meter turn and it turned out pretty nice! Beware though, if you go right straight after the path leading from the sawmill up towards the smelter and follow the cliffs, you'll come across a super-canyon that the steel bridge can't reach the bottom of, and you have to put foundations down to actually cross it.

In the UK, drivers in the steam era most certainly knew how to repair a locomotive, we just didn't do it whilst on the mainline because that's ridiculously unsafe, but also our trains didn't tend to break catastrophically unless a collision occured or someone *really* fucked up

Steam locomotives in general don't tend to break catastrophically unless a collision occurred or someone really fucked up. However, many UK steam locomotives aren't exactly easy to service on a line anyway. A lot of your steamers have inboard cylinders that are great for keeping the locomotive stable at speed but as a tradeoff require a service pit to access.

Only having a bit of fun - of course the UK rail system was incredible in the day, and I imagine is now (I'm just less familiar). But you did have less of a chance of being stranded in the middle of nowhere than we did... Lol!

30:56, 31:23 sounds to me like what you actually need is more people...and in turn more rolling stock. I enjoy watching and learning from you guys. I never would've thought about any of these layouts.

For the track to the iron mine I’d suggest a switchback type of plan to get up to it as it cuts the amount of track you have to build and is realistic to the actual narrow gauge railroads that used and still use switchbacks to get up steep grades

In saluda nc, the grade was so steep for trains that they had to double, or sometimes triple or quadruple the hill. It was the steepest class 1 railroad grade I think in America. The norfolk southern abandoned the line in the early 2000s because it was too in efficient and expensive to operate on. There's a railroad museum in saluda in the old Station, and the tracks have had washout from lack of Maintenence.

Y’all should make a Y to connect the smelter line, iron mine line, and lumber mill line. It would make the trip a lot more better.

Can't wait till we get more trains so far the Heisler has the best whistle and power And another thing, was it easier to design an industry (sawmill, smelter, etc) with a railway in mind or the other way around

Hey Hyce, would you mind explaining the switching terminology? Kicking is self evident, but I know that there's some more methods that aren't done frequently anymore as the FRA frowns on it. IIRC there's some way you kick a car and run around it and put it on the other side of the train, which I'm having a hard time imagining

That's called a Running Switch. You would for example have a car on the back of the engine and want it on the front. You would have a switch lined for the straight, get up to speed and cut the car loose so it is free rolling behind the engine, speed up the engine and get past the switch, have someone on the ground turn the switch before the car reaches it so the car goes onto the diverging route, then you can stop the engine once the car is clear, back up, and go into that track and couple the car to the front of the engine. It isn't done very often since you realistically need at least 3 people and it is really unsafe, engineer running the engine, conductor riding the car to break the joint and operate the handbrake, and the brakeman on the ground getting the switch. As for other switching movements you have kicking, as mentioned, and gravity drops. Kicking and running switches are allowed but gravity drops are no longer allowed by the CROR (Canadian Rail Operating Rules) A gravity drop is kind of like kicking cars but down a hill.

Injectors are fascinating. They don't work so much off the principle of pressure so much as velocity, which is amazing.

Good luck when you two do the run to the iron mine. I managed a 2% grade all the way through it. Had to double stack bridges for the big crevasse crossing between the mine and foundry. Took me hours of redoing large sections and I had to fit 3 loops to get it down low enough

Around 51:00 or so, you talk about the soot lines being left behind in tunnels and the like of steam trains and after seeing a video of a UK steam train running under catenary wires made me wonder. How bad are steam trains for catenary wires in terms of the soot? :P

From the play through before the spline update, but after the physics rework, Betsy was able to make it up a 2% with 6-7 empty cordwood cars from the smelter. Not sure how much it’s changed.
