Also a great new project for your new mill would be to make attachable/detachable V-Way style vice jaws for the new Hydmech for your rounds and angle iron cuts. I will never set up a machinist shop and am glad you have the opportunity to do so, Adam. There must be a host of machines that could be added to a well-equipped shop, I am curious to know what you think are the essential machines to effectively operate a shop. In my wood shop, for instance, I have four different routers but I could get by effectively with just one. And I have both a miter saw and a table saw. I use both all the time but there isn't a cut on the miter saw that couldn't be done on the table saw. Frankly, there isn't a cut that couldn't be done with a hand saw but I'm not looking at it that way. So, if you boiled it down to essential, common machines, what would you choose?

A useful project Grab an engine hoist cherrypicker thing and modify it to make it into a small portable crane. The base on these is designed to fit under a vehicle and they’re not very mobile or stable. Make a square base with much less forward protrusion and larger castors put a heavy counter weight on the base to keep the crane balanced when lifting. The purpose of this is for those who don’t have access to a proper crane or forklift but need to safely load a lathe or milling machine.

Adam, may I make a suggestion? Perhaps you might want to consider placing the band saw just on the left of the overhead door (upon entering the shop) and to the left of the office door. It won't be as much of an impingement upon traffic coming in through your overhead door that way, and you can easily set up a vertical stock rack in that corner where the front of the shop meets the office wall. There might even be enough room to put up your infeed rollers. The toolbox and other things that you currently have there could be moved to another area at the shop. Think about it. The reason I make this suggestion is a matter of "flow". Naturally when stock enters your shop you're going to want to have the cutoff saw close to where it enters. And by putting it on that side..... It might save you the trouble of having to move it every time the truck comes in.

Know you;re going to love this machine. You might want to consider the outfeed/infeed table when you think about portability and having to move it a lot. Maybe another location would be better overall?
@utidjian2 жыл бұрын
Fair point Clyde. The infeed (and outfeed) tables are a good idea, especially the infeed. I think he got only the infeed table. I think the way he has it setup at the moment is the optimal position for workflow in this shop. Two bolts hold the infeed table to the saw base then one twistlock electrical connection and he can scoot it anywhere where there is space in the shop using the pallet jack. The infeed table will be out of the way as it is much narrower than the saw. If his primary work was, say, fabrication or production where he would often need to cut a lot of stock to length at one time then an outfeed table would be essential. In a job shop/repair shop like Adams most of the work is one offs and usually something he could hand carry or have a cart catch the stock. Having the saw near the entrance is really the best place IMO.

Hi Adam. Congrats on another quality bit of gear 👍 I’m thinking that you could make a four ‘catchers’ for the levelling blocks. That way, when you do have to move the machine for deliveries, you wouldn’t need to mess around resetting the blocks under the machine. The blocks would stay ( loosely) attached to the machine. More work initially… sure…. but in a brand new shop with probably a lot more ‘big’ deliveries, it might make sense. The ‘catchers’ are simply right angle brackets screwed to the sides of the levelling blocks, and slotted to fit around the levelling bolts. Easy-peasy…. 😎 Regards Robert
