Let's check out the legend about the phenomenon of paper folding in half, which says that it is not possible to fold a piece of paper in half more than seven times. Challenge

@martinwnek215810 ай бұрын
I can explain this equation :). It's the ratio of paper thickness to it's size. When you fold the paper on half it's gets thicker 2 times, when you fold it again it's 4 times thicker, then 8, 16, 32 and so one. When you fold it 10 times it's 512 thicker. If you have 2 times thinner paper you can fold it one more time having the same thickness at the end. 2 dimension layer of graphene has 0,000 000 335 mm thicknes so you propably can fold it 23 times until it reaches 1,4cm of thickness. The smallest distance according to physicist is Planck constant (0, 000 000 000 000 000 000 000 000 000 000 000 000 6m ) and it's the resolution of our space. Well, after the 7th folding, you have 2^7=128 layers of paper. After the 8th folding, it is 256 layers. The size of the paper doesn't matter, the bend is local, and that's where the 512 layers tear apart because of the thickness.

Eh, more or less. The issue is that paper isn't infinitely thin, so all the folds have width. It's hypothetically possible to fold it more than 7 times. You just need an absolutely massive sheet of paper to account for the folds. Here, the press was essentially ripping the paper to cheat and make it look like it was folded thinner

It was on that moment, when the paper had been folded seven times and had been placed on the hydraulic press... Alarms began to shriek as the pressure mounted. Sparks flew from actuators and junction boxes. The legendary eighth fold... The impossible fold, it was happening. But would it be completed? Or would the strain be too much for the industrial press? Lights flickered. The very metal began to make ominous noises. It was almost there, just a few more PSI. A fraction more force... Bolts sheared off and ricocheted across the room like bullets. Tiedown cables snapped with loud 'twang!'s. Transformers outside blew. Windows shattered. The very ground shook. And then... The hydraulic press exploded, sending fragments in every direction. When the smoke cleared, there, in the crater that was once the middle of the building, a piece of paper sat... The eighth fold barely valid, but valid. Arcs of power leapt from the material to the debris around it as it glowed in an unnatural blue light. It was done. The legendary Octipleat. The hardest substance known to science.

Very interesting video but I am not convinced by two facts: 1) you need a continous gigantic piece of paper and not different papers glued together, as those parts are actually weaker and because of the symmetry, it's where you fold the first 4, 5 times 2) the paper after the 7th folding is not very well folded, as the edges get apart when removing force on the hydraulic press. So actually you feel the strenght of paper only in part of the sheet. It was still very interesting but I would be very interested in some paper company producing a football field surface sheet of paper and try that again! By the way, like for the enthusiasm and suspense!

@distraction28033 жыл бұрын
@@poopyfarts6010 To fold a paper 12 times you'd need an extraordinarily thin paper with huge surface area. If we're talking about a standardized 8.5" by 11" piece of letter paper, it is physically impossible to fold it more than 7 times without extreme force (far more than what a human can output) and permanently compromising the structural integrity of the paper, to an extent where it may no longer be considered paper.

Nothing stops a piece of paper from being folded more than seven times if the paper is thin enough. Depending on the thickness and width of the paper, after a certain number of folds, the paper stack becomes thicker than it is wide. After that point, there simply is nothing left to fold, so the limit is reached. Each fold in half makes a paper twice as thick, so that n folds of a paper that has a thickness of t results in a total thickness of 2nt. At the same time, every two folds cuts the width in half, so that n folds reduce the width w to (1/2)n/2w. If we say that a paper can't be folded when its total thickness equals its width, then 2nt = (1/2)w. Solving for n, we find that the maximum number of times a paper can be folded is: n = 0.96 ln (w/t) This equation assumes we fold side to side, then top to bottom, then side to side, etc. Using this equation, a standard piece of printer paper has w = 8.5 inches and t = 0.004 inches, so that n = 7. So a standard piece of paper can indeed only be folded seven times. However, if we had an 8.5 x 11 in. sheet of paper that was a quarter as thick as normal, using this equation, we could fold it nine times. If you take a roll of toilet paper and roll it out into one long line you can fold it even more.

On the 7th fold, 64 layers are being folded. To get an idea of that, staple together 64 sheets of A4 copy paper along all four edges and fold it in half. It couldn't be done without damaging it.

I used to try this as a little kid when I was bored. I didn't know it was a "thing" or a challenge. I needed to keep my mind occupied, and I didn't have much. Right before the internet. And without a hydraulic press, obviously. 😄

Yes if you use parameters outside the norm of what is usually implied. What is usually implied is "can you fold one piece of paper with your bare hands more than 7 times?" The parameters with this video are "can you fold it more with this ultimate crushing machine that's designed to fold and smash and flatten things out."
@kamila33663 жыл бұрын
The problem of folding paper 7 times is that the thickness after 7 bends is 2^7=128 sheets of paper and it is hard to fold 128 small sheets of paper. Next fold makes thickness 2^8=256, next is 512, next 1024... With this machine paper thickness is not constant so you can go futher than 7 times :)

What legends do with hydraulic press? Ans: We fold paper

Aluminum foil seems to fold infinitely using a press but it is getting re-mashed each squeeze. I’ve seen the press channel try it.
@CZpersi9 ай бұрын
I would define a successful fold only as the one, which can be unfolded again without tearing the paper apart. With such pressures, you are no longer folding the paper, you are simply crushing its structure and squishing it into place.

I tried this at home, made it to 42 folds, now I’m on the moon.

Shouldn’t you press it in between every fold, to get it as flat as possible and with as much air out as possible each time?

@4Maestro12 жыл бұрын
The answer is yes. But you have to increase the size (area) of the paper you start with, and the thinner the better (like tissue paper or tracing paper).
@4Maestro12 жыл бұрын
Which you did. Sort of. ;) Gluing several pieces together changes the orientation of the fibers when they are folded, as well as the thickness at the fold. Essentially an =/>3:1 ratio, whereas if you had done one large single sheet, it would've been a 2:1 ratio, and the fibers would be folding back on themselves generally in the same axis.
