Fine building sand worked well for me in copper when I made a fuel pre-heater for my 4x4. Similar windings to your device wrapped around a 28mm piece of copper pipe added into the engines coolant loop. I was burning processed cooking oil mix and this helped a lot.

I've bent both copper tube (refrigeration tube 3/16" OD) and stainless tube (seamless 1/4"ID air line, to be used as a moisture condenser coil on a specialist air compressor) using the sand fill method with 50 mesh sand (0.0117" / 0.297mm dia) It works very well as it requires only a light crimp and some tape over the ends, you can also anneal the metal part way through the process is you wish. The downfall however is removing the sand after the coil is complete, this can be tiresome if done by hand, but I found that taping the completed coil to a square base orbital sander clamped in a vice makes it an easy task (it just vibrates all the sand from the coil once running).

Off to a good start if you anneal the steel before you start will make the work much easier. Also soak the tool in vinegar after x amount of hours operation to remove scale build up.

What did the water do for you exactly? I’m trying to figure out how I can bend stainless steel into a coil/wort for a water distiller

The water trick looks much easier than sand or salt. I have used tube benders for steel tube that worked on NEW STEEL. OLD STEEL WILL NOT BEND OR FLARE for me. As long as I stay with new steel I have never had a problem.
