yes because if you detonate a bomb with a power around 100 megatons it would cause a global fallout and this is more than useless and dumb
@Ficii18 жыл бұрын
As maritime said, it was only half of what it could be, and as Kaffohrt said, it would probably cause a global fallout due to radioactive cloud blowing up high into stratosphere almost as high as mesosphere (50 km or around 30 miles). But there was also the fear of lead designers that it would burn the Earths atmosphere, hydrogen and oxygen in it. After the test of Tsar bomba, one of the designers (Andrej Saharov) was so shocked that it was so powerful, became worried about the future of humanity and was the one who signed the treaty of no nuclear test in 1963.

It's simple, an Atomic bomb is a fission device, meaning that it gets all of its energy from the splitting of heavy atoms. A Hydrogen bomb is a fission/fusion device. This means that to start the reaction, an atomic bomb is used as the trigger. The heat and X-ray blast then causes the secondary fuel ( Usually a form of lithium) to fuse. Thus the Hydrogen bomb gets it's energy from fusion which is as the name says, atoms fuse together to create a new element releasing tremendous energy in the process.

@Aftermath18649 жыл бұрын
The H-bomb you are referring to is a Teller Ulum design. This is the most powerful version of the H-bomb that has been tested, and is the only version of the H-bomb that derives a significant portion of its power from fusion (i.e. usually the majority). The one thing you got wrong is that generally, lithium-6 is used instead of tritium because it is more accessible and provides a higher density (lithium deuteride is a chemical compound and lithium-6 will fission and produce two tritium nuclei when bombarded by neutrons). There is another "fusion" device, or "H-bomb" that is a more likely culprit for the recent test. It consists of some small amount of hydrogen or deuterium in the core of a conventional fission device. A small amount of the already tiny amount of fusible material actually undergoes fusion, so it does not produce much additional explosive yield. However, it does produce a massive number of additional neutrons, which increase the efficiency of the fission reaction by several factors (a pure fission bomb has an efficiency in the neighborhood of 20%. That is, the bomb reaches a subcritical density when 20% of the nuclear fuel is consumed). Because this type of weapon is orders of magnitude simpler to produce, and because we did not see a likely yield of 100+ kilotons, it is likely that this is what they tested. Google: Boosted Fission Device.

You're wrong on the tamper. The tamper is made of U-238 (depleted uranium)-not U-235-which can undergo fission from fast-neutrons. U-235 tampers are too hard to purify in that quantity, so they figured out that U-238 can undergo fission if bombarded by fast neutrons. U-235 is ideal for primaries because they undergo fission from slow-neturons which can start the chain-reaction; however, after the secondary is ignited, there are plenty of fast neutrons available which can cause even U-238 to undergo fission.

Thank you for this explanation, I still don't understand but I still appreciate it.
@stevepittman37706 жыл бұрын
I'm a bit late to the party, but.. This is mostly pretty accurate, though the secondary frequently also contains a fission 'spark plug' in the center that kick-starts fusion, and the fuel in more modern thermonuclear bombs tends to be deuterium and lithium since lithium produces tritium in-situ and doesn't require a lot of expensive tritium to be manufactured before-hand. Also the tamper tends to be not-very-enriched Uranium, mostly 238. The reason a bunch of extra stages aren't used is because the primary purpose of fusion is to make lots of extra neutrons to make the fission reactions burn more nuclear fuel which means you need less material and can actually make more, smaller, cheaper bombs for the same amount of fissile material. Since it's better strategically to have more smaller bombs you'll almost never find huge bombs intended for deployment. Also you're correct that the Tsar Bomba was a 3-stage device, but they disabled the 3rd stage (which would've taken it to 100 megatons or more) because the scientists were worried it could be way too powerful. Source: I read a lot about nuclear bombs.
@NH-pv9tm2 жыл бұрын
Sit could you pleas tell us how much heat in 100 megatons ?
@stevepittman37702 жыл бұрын
@@NH-pv9tm Megatons is a measure of explosive energy (the force of the blast wave), not the heat it outputs. Those things are related just not in a 1:1 fashion. So the short answer is: I dunno, a lot. The slightly longer answer is: millions of degrees; the heating of the air is one of the primary means of generating a shockwave, it just gets so hot so fast that the air literally cannot get out of the way fast enough.

At what yield (-also know as size of the warhead in either kilotons or megatons) does a atomic bomb became a H-bomb?
@miguellopez33927 жыл бұрын
atomic bombs have size limit before they detonate too fast and blow away fissionable materiel and when they become so big they self detonate, hydrogen bombs dont have this limit unless its the size of the sun wich in its self one huge hydrogen bomb, hydrogen bombs are entirely different from other nuclear bombs, they produce much less radio active fallout but still require a smaller atomic bomb to detonate.

There's no loss of mas in fission contrary to popular belief. The energy comes from the loss of the binding energy used to keep the nucleus together.
@puncheex27 жыл бұрын
I've never seen so many puffed up misconceptions in one place in my life. Everyone thinks because they play Fallout they know nukes. rachard McIntyre: You don't get good ideas about nukes from nuke movies. That's like the people who watch Fat Man and Little Boy judging Oppenheimer by the charcater playing him - they do that in the video that shows 2 minutes of the movie. A nuclear weapon is one that makes use of nuclear processes. So far as we know now, those are decay, fission, and fusion. An atomic bomb is a misnomer; all bombs (even conventional) are atomic. It used to be attached only to fission weapons. Hydrogen weapons are ones that use hydrogen (and its brothers deuterium and tritium) to fuse for blast effect. Today's weapons are hybrids: they use fission to build temperature and pressure and EM "light" pressure, they inject tritium into it to boost the numbers of neutrons, they use that to start fusion reactions in lithium deuteride, mainly to create scads of neutrons, they use a fission sparkplug and the a depleted uranium tamper to do the heavy lifting and create the fallout. The thermonuke is a fusion nuke so named because the neutrons that come out have a "thermal" energy spectrum. That makes them most effective fissioning U-235 and plutonium. Higher energy neutrons are required to fission U-238. The hydrogen is not simply "layered on" a fission weapon. The Soviets tried that, and while it did create a big bang, it wasn't in a class with the US thermonukes, and they had to search farther. The secret was the "Teller-Ulam" design, invented separately by the US, the USSR and the Brits. God only knows where the French and Chinese got the word.

Do H bombs have radiation fallout?
@coughsyrupconnoisseur6 жыл бұрын
Sure, but sometimes not as much as some pure fission designs.
@appleintosh6 жыл бұрын
A pure fusion weapon would be 100% clean, since the fusion reaction between deuterium and tritium produces no radioactive elements. However, we don’t have pure fusion weapons. Kiloton to kiloton, a thermonuclear weapon will be cleaner than a nuclear weapon of the same yield. The higher percentage of the yield that comes from fusion, the cleaner the bomb will be.
@coughsyrupconnoisseur6 жыл бұрын
A pure fusion weapon wouldn't be 100% clean, but it would be pretty darn clean. It would still produce excess tritium and Carbon-14.

@JuhaJGaming: No, the Tsar Bomba was dropped in 1961. The full blown version did not take almost 30 years to get cancelled. The design was finished, but not implemented. The USSR made their point with the smaller version which actually yielded 57 Megatons of TNT.

Wrong about the energy comparison of uranium. If you take a mug for an imperial cup, which equals 240ml, then you can calculate the energy capacity of the uranium 235 with that of TNT. The energy capacity of TNT is it's total weight, in this case (assuming you used imperial tons), 20320940 kilograms, multiplied by it's energy density. Weight = 20320940 Kilograms Energy density per kilogram = 4.6 Megajoules per Kilogram. 20320940 * 4.6 = 93,476,324 Megajoules of energy. Now, let's do the same for Uranium 235: Volume = 240cm^2 Energy density per liter/decimeter^3 = 1539842000 Megajoules per Liter 1539842000 * 0.24 = 369,562,080 Megajoules of energy. ... Uranium has about 4 times the amount of megajoules of energy. *TL;DR* An imperial cup of Uranium 235 is equal to about 80.5 Metric Tons of TNT, not 20.5.
@puncheex27 жыл бұрын
Let's try that again. For the TNT: A cup holds about a quarter liter, chemical energy of a kg of TNT = 4.2 MJ/kg, TNT density is 1.7 kg/L, 1/4 L x 4.2 MJ/kg x1.7 kg/L ~= 1.8 MJ = 1.8e6 J for the U-235,: Again, A cup holds about a quarter liter, nuclear energy for uranium = mc^2, uranium density ~= 20 g/cm^3, speed of light squared is 9e16 m^2/sec^2) 1/4 L x (20 kg/L x 9e16 m^2/sec^2) 45e16 J, providing the uranium is completely converted to energy (for this, 5 kg of anything would suffice). In a typical modern bomb, 20% of the uranium is fissioned (nearer to 50% in a reactor), and only about 1/500 of that mass is converted into energy. This a answer for a bomb is 45e16 x 1/500 * 1/5 ~ 2e13. The ratio is 2e13 / 1.8e6 ~= 1.1e7 or ~ 11 million, not too far from the accepted value of 8 million. The terminology is a scientific notation. For example 6e5 means 6 x 10^5, or 600,000, The chemical energy expressed "in a ton of TNT" has been standardized as 4.184 MJ/kg. See wiki, TNT equivalent. I think you are comparing a ton of TNT to a cup of uranium.

I have a question, boosted fission + thermonuclear hydrogen bombs work quite differently, but yet is it truely possible to compress hydrogen isotopes or at least create them inside the core with lithium deutride to create an explosive fusion detonation? If so, how small do the isotopes have to be compressed? Im guessing immensly, so immense that you would need a fission reaction to compress it, just how explosives pressurise plutonium like in the pumpkin design bombs such as the "Fat Man"
@appleintosh6 жыл бұрын
That’s what the primary is for in a thermonuclear weapon. The primary detonates, and creates X rays. These X rays are directed to the secondary, and compress the fusion fuel via radiation implosion. Basically, the X rays hit the surface of the secondary, and vaporize the surface. These particles from the vaporized pusher fly off the secondary with tremendous energy, which, due to conservation of momentum, pushes in on the secondary. This creates the pressure required for the fusion of hydrogen. While this is happening, the spark plug made of fissile material (usually U235) undergoes fission, and creates heat, and more pressure, which compresses the fusion fuel from the inside. These two forces cause the deuterium and tritium to fuse and release more neutrons.

Interesting....I always wondered about how this worked. When they test the bomb in open space underground, that's not a good source of testing. They'll have to wonder how their ideas actually add up with reality. If they test it, it may not come off like that in real life, and will just start a nuclear world war. What they don't realize is that type of thing endangers their own lives as well. Its subject to possible disruption of tsunamis, earthquakes, and volcanic eruptions. As well as damaging our food sources and areas with radiation.
@Lea_Kaderova6 жыл бұрын
NK testing is focused to reiteration of theoretical and practical construction of Ulam-Teller method (switch from urchin device to three-stage nuclear warhead), not to observe consequences of thermonuclear explosion, so underground tests are most rational way for such purpouse.

The US only dropped 2 on Japan before they were even aware of all the side-effects. At the time all they thought it was, was a big explosion, they viewed that as a better alternative then a mainland invasion which would of been much deadlier in the long run. Though a little over 2000 nuclear weapons have been detonated as tests by about a dozen countries, the the US and Russia (then Soviet Union) were responsible for most of them. During the Cuban missile crisis, the Soviets nearly launched one if not for a single Soviet submarine officer going against orders. You could say because the atomic bombs were dropped on cities (quite intentionally), that it could be considered a war crime because the blasts were quite indiscriminant about what they destroyed, and killed many many civilians, but during WW2 every country committed them, with the Soviets probably being the worst, so I fail to see how it's anymore evil then the holocaust, what the Japanese did to the Chinese, the genocide and mass rape the Soviets committed, and the brutal treatment of Germans by the UK (among many others).
