Blue-green algae blooms can be tricky and dangerous. Blue-green algae blooms that come on and persist, are indicative of a high nutrient load in the pond. In this case we have another instance where neighborhood residents have been feeding waterfowl. Because of this, there are generally about 100 to 150 ducks and geese that reside on this half-acre pond. Some literature says that a single bird can produce up to a POUND of waster per day! The traditional way to kill algae was with copper sulfate. While copper does kill blue-green algae, it can also cause a cascade of side effects, one of which is shifting the algae community to EVEN MORE blue-green algae. Here you can see how we used a pelletized hydrogen peroxide, instead of copper, to kill blue-green algae. It is highly effective and safe for the pond!
