Bless your dad's heart for coming through for you on the supplies. I'm strictly an indoor-in-organic-soil guy and my father recoiled in horror when he saw what I have growing in my basement. The price of veggies has my wife giving the nod to another grow light and a crack at hydroponics. Gonna grow something innocent for a change.

Never use clear containers, you want as little light getting in as possible. Light is just gonna encourage growth of algie and bacteria and imped root growth (which looking @7:06 has gotten really bad) . If you're gonna go with the DWC method, i would suggest black tough totes from home depot and spray paint the lids. Same if you're using buckets with netcup lids, get the black 5gal buckets if you can otherwise you need to spray paint them. Also wouldn't advice using rapid rooter, its not ph neutral and it will decompose throwing your system way off. Just use rock wool, for 1 to 2 inch net cup with hydroton (clay pebbles) you only need like a 12mm starter plug. You can cut like 12 of them out of a standard rockwool cube. Only other starter advice i could think to suggest would be pick your self up a digital pH meter (those strips are next to useless when balancing with adjusters) and TDS.

​@@kevansx1000 Depends on what you mean by food safe. Most totes and buckets are made from plastics considered "Food grade" such as polypropylene and PET. The only concern with plastics is BPA, which is more so just used in polycarb.

If you want more Lighting on your plants take your tin foil and place it where a lot of light is not shiny with a shiny part toward the light the light will bounce off of the tin foil giving it more lighting

But that won't help in an apartment.. HOWEVER. if you have a balcony in your apartment. you could surely set that all up outside on the balcony ! IMO..

You build a very nice hydroponic structure. Very well done. However, the algae is a big problem because they eat your plants nutrients. To prevent algae in the future, paint your containers completely black. First put a primer then the black paint. No need to buy new containers. I also have to thank you for the pebbles solution. We are also using the Kratky system and the cononut peat is indeed disposed in the water. On itself it is not bad, but it is better to get the water clean. You are very passionate and inspirational. I only checked it once, just in the beginning. I only fertilize when I start it, and then top up the water as I go, no extra fertilizing! In a month or so the lettuce gets all picked anyways and the process repeats!

Is it enough to practically immerse your rapid rooter material or is it just enough to come up over to not more than a quarter or half of the rapid rooter? Thank you so mnuch for watching my video!! So you just want the water to come up to the bottom of the rapid rooter, maybe about an inch, this way the rapid rooter will remain moist, and that provides the water to the baby seedlings :)

Sounds like Black colored containers would be perfect to stop any algae growth? When you harvest lettuce outside, you just cut it about an inch before the base and it just continues to grow. Does that work with Hydroponic set up like this? Have you tweaked anything since you did this video? Can you reuse the clay pellets and just wash them off between re-seedings?

Yes black colored containers are the ideal thing o use! Yes it works the same way, except I now only use the rapid rooters and a 2" pot, so I dont even need the clay pebbles, the rapid rooter fits right inside!

I have a question. It all looks great and foing great on s flat dort of plant nut jow would you grow tomatoes? Green beans domt have to climb or cucumbers and those are the things we really want. You need a larger deeper reservoir to do tomatoes properly. There are tons of videos on that. Hydroponic growing is not as simple as people make it out to be on KZbin and such so don't go that route if you want something simpler. I do DWC for "other" plants as my day job and changing the reservoir is a lot of work. You have to prepare 5+ gallons of nutrient solution for a single plant, properly ph it and make sure the EC/PPM etc is good. You will have to do resevoir swaps every week or 2 so you will be moving gallons of water often and water is fairly heavy. IMO if you just want tomatoes indoor get a decent grow tent, a decent led light, some fabric pots and a decent soil. If you want to grow hydroponically for fun then search for deep water culture (DWC) or go to a local hydroponics store and someone there will be able to help you.

You could try, if it’s not too harsh of direct sunlight and about 8hrs ideally it should work… but water will evaporate way quicker outdoors in that uncontrolled heat, something to look out for. You’ll need to refill more often.

Honestly you only need to add more filtered water to it. So it’s as simple as lifting the top of the container and adding more water back up to the line. There is already a concentrated amount of your minerals since most of what has been removed is the water, and that’s all you should need to replace until you re-do your seedlings :)

Not sure if it's been said before but I'd recommend painting those totes with a coat or two of black then a coat or two of white paint. These transparent totes + nutrient rich water + light is a strong medium for algae growth and it can lead to all kinds of problems for the plant. Awesome setup though!

I’ve only had to do it once every month or every other month - you actually don’t want to add more nutrients since there will still be some leftover and it will be concentrated, so all you need to do is top it up with water once it gets below an inch or so! How often that happens probably varies by climate too :)

Oh I just grew a tomato plant in here!! But it got too tall for the space. You can use this method for many plants, you just need to make sure they have the right amount of space for the size they reach :) im not positive on each plants PH requirements but a quick google search should answer that!

Pro-tip, paint your tubs black then white to make them light tight. Light in resi is number one reason for rot, bacteria, fungi and algea. All of which will suck nutrients from solution.

I also prefer white, I don't even bother with a coat black. I also don't use spray paint I found it VERY expensive to properly coat with spray paint. Get a good paint for about $30 for a gal. I usually use the black tote with yellow lid and just pour the white paint into lid a thin layer at a time until its nicely coated, no light gets through.

I wonder if you could use dirty fish tank water as your fertilizer? Or a diluted solutoon with it. You could, but honestly I watched a video where not using a water pump produced the same or even better results. Dont remember the science as to why, but I top off the water once it drops to about 1". And after doing that once or twice, the lettuce outgrows its cycle, and a new cycle begins with fresh everything all over again :)

I did! But I’m not sure if I needed to. I think it helped a lot in the beginning of the seedling process but once the lettuce got tall it didn’t seem to need both lights. I think the most important change Id make to my set up is getting a 4-5ft tall stand instead of 3, this way the lettuce doesn’t burn at the top hitting the lights and has more room to grow

Hey Ria! Hm I have not seen or tried sunflowers, I know people have success doing this method with strawberries and tomatoes. The lettuce tasted great, I got about a handful a day for salads and I even had to give some away because I had too much! It lasted longer in the fridge than store bought lettuce too!!
