I own a Fire Prevention Company and have been testing Fire Extinguishers for 30 years. This is exactly what a testing room looks like. Powder everywhere. There are many other videos out there, usually by manufactures of equipment that show a perfectly clean shiny room with no yellow powder anywhere... Yeah, right... The only thing this video didn't show you is the holes in the walls because you get mad when an extinguisher goes off and the technician throw the thing against the wall. and then rights NFG on it.

I have a bunch of old fire extinguishers. A couple were partly discharged. What should I do with them. 5pound

My shop looks nothing like that and I’ve been doing fire extinguishers for over 20 years myself. I also have SOP’s in place to control the powder versus what I see in this shop. Dumping chemical into an open bucket instead of having a bucket lid on the top with a hole cutting it so just the mouth of the extinguisher cylinder fits in it. That cylinder vacuum thing from Getz is a piece of garbage. I came up with something my first week in fire protection that I’ve been using ever since 1995. Also, I don’t DOT test Ansul extinguishers because they’re not DOT cylinders

I work for big company that does this.. we always pressure to the end of the green just before so people can get as much use out of it as possible during an emergency.. and the hydrostatic testing in my state's only 30 seconds I find that interesting you guys have to do it for a minute

Test pressures are not all 3 times operating pressures but by the pressure on the label. Not all extinguishers are under USDOT requirements.

Good video. Thank you. Long ago I had a relatively small fire get away from me because of an extinguisher that stopped spraying long before it was empty. I honestly never paid much attention to extinguishers before that. Losing most of your possessions, your dog, and almost losing your wife and young son because of a faulty extinguisher is NOT something anyone should ever go through. Just because the gauge is in the green does *NOT* guarantee that it will function as you expect. Buy the biggest extinguisher(s) you can afford, keep it serviced and/or replace it as required. Fire is cruel, lightning fast and unforgiving.

In Australia they don't put a verification of service collar on them after testing - They only stamp the bottle. Makes you wonder if they're Hydrostatically testing them properly.
@Krajorg2 жыл бұрын
I doubt it the majority of people probably just stamp it without doing anything that’s why we use service collars because you have to take the head off in order to put it on
@ghermansizer Жыл бұрын
They stamp the co2 bottle with the date and their R.i.n. #.

When a unit calls for 585 test pressure but the working gauge sets on 586 or 588 what gets recorded on the data sheet? What gets punched out on the sticker label for the hydro reading?

Is there a name or band of the device used at the 1:45 mark that blows out the excess powder? Or is that Custom made? I work for a Fire Extinguisher Service company in Maryland and are building out a new room for servicing extinguishers any help would be much appreciated thank you!
@joshwoodsmusic79795 жыл бұрын
Chase Castle they make a vacuum device that you tip the extinguisher over and it sucks the remaining powder. He was using it in the beginning

So the powder gets discharged into the hopper. But what about the nitrogen going into the air in the room? At work we recharge 30-40 5lb. Extinguishers in 6 hours. Is it safe to breath in all that nitrogen? Thanks
@justanotherguy87916 жыл бұрын
By volume, dry air contains 78.09% nitrogen, 20.95% oxygen, 0.93% argon, 0.04% carbon dioxide, and small amounts of other gases.

What is the purpose of doing a hydrostatic test when you could just replace the extinguisher completely for a fraction of the cost?
@PimpMyDitchWitch4 жыл бұрын
Because it is not a fraction of the cost. Either you replace an extinguisher every 12 years or you get it tested every 12 years and have it last 50 years.
@user-wq4qm8nj2u3 жыл бұрын
A hydrostatic test is a 1/4 of the price of most new extinguishers unless your buying a junk extinguisher. Secondly it's better for the environment to reuse a perfectly acceptable extinguisher.

My questions to this video... Per NFPA 10 IS IT NOT MANDATORY TO CHANGE ALL PARTS EVERY 6 YEARS? NEW VALVE STEM NEW ORING I mean technically by the video the proper services were not completed due to that nature. If going to show on youtube shouldn't you be 100%?
@PimpMyDitchWitch4 жыл бұрын
Every 6 years is an internal inspection to determine whether everything is good inside and out. You only have to replace things that are broken in it.

According to NFPA 10 standard, you are required to hold the pressure for one minute
