The owner of this video uploaded the explanation of that scene, you can find it on his channel, unfortunately it's in Spanish, but if you're interested I'll tell you some relevant points 1: The video was filmed in Kenya in the Amboseli national park with a friend who recently passed away. 2: in the morning while they were recording a lion, they received a call from the protected park guards that there were hyenas attacking a hippopotamus 3: when they arrived there were 3 hyenas and little by little more began to arrive 4: the hippo had a territorial fight with a dominant male, the hippo was injured in a hind leg and was unable to move easily 5: the hippopotamus was unlucky enough to get into a shallow lagoon when there was a much deeper lagoon a few meters away where perhaps it could have recovered 6: when they arrived it was approximately 7:00AM in the morning, after all the mockery and the bites and the loss of blood from the wounds caused by the hyenas, the hippopotamus died at approximately 1:00 p.m. 7: despite all the hours in which the hippopotamus suffered and was eaten alive by hyenas, no one at any time interfered in this process since nature must be allowed to act even if one does not like it. Most animals seem to handle it the same way when they are preyed upon. Maybe they go into different kind of shock than humans. Any one of us would squeel and flap around in absolute agony by those hyenas. But mentally we also process it differently.

The hippo was already dying before they got there, but it doesn't matter which animals started feeding on them; if a lion pride found it they would start eating from the back, too. Without a weapon, there's not quick way to kill a hippo. The cats at least try to remove the heart first with the baby hippos.

As hienas sentem fome e tem crias pra alimentar. Se os humanos interferem, os filhotes delas irão passar fome e alguns podem até morrer. Nesses casos não tem oq fazer, o hipopotamo estava com a pata quebrada e não conseguiria ir muito longe desse jeito, estar com uma pata quebrada é praticamente sentença de morte na natureza.

​@@Dnvr8083no, not really. I mean, there is a reason why animals try to flee from carnivores. Like it's natural fear to be eaten for all of us, we can understand the pain it must be outside of our own species, ie typically having a larger sympathy range. While most other animals would hate it to happen to them but are more like "well at least that isn't me right now". We also understand the deeper implications of deaths and estimate how painfull that would be to go bassed on current knowledge. While most animals tend to think in the present, we tend to think in all three moments in time/ past, present, and future.

I think the hippo had it’s spinal cord injured by all the biting on the back and had his legs paralyzed. It looks to me like lions did that because they like to climb on the back of their preys that are bigger or taller than hyenas being the scavengers that they are came to finish the job.
