As a former PMC, I can't believe it was this hard to find a tutorial for a life saving device... I used these back in the day, and if you know anything about military, we stick with what works.

I guess I’ll take us further back in the day before chest seals. We were actually trained to use the interior side of pressure dressing bandages to seal the wound (or the plastic or foil you could find). On the exhale you’d place the bandage wrapper over the wound with hand pressure. Then in the next exhale you’d place the pressure dressing over the wrapper and then fight like hell to wrap the tails around the individual to secure the dressing. It was a beast by yourself and still quite difficult even with two people. One of the few good things about war are the medical advancements that are achieved. Excellent video. I keep a couple of these in my medical kit just to be safe.

My last formal, comprehensive first aid training was Red Cross Multimedia training in the eighties. I'm guessing that was before you were born. I was on the fire crew at work for ten years, but I never had formal, comprehensive first aid training. I think they showed us how to set up an oxygen bottle once and how to use an AED once, and I had both of those trainings in 2000 or 2001. Do you think there's any value in my buying one of these and having it available based only on the training that I've gotten from a few KZbin videos? I'm inclined to think that I shouldn't try to buy this stuff until I can get some formal, hands-on training somewhere. I suspect that such training is going to be hard to find. I'm disabled, so I can't sit through an all-day class on a Saturday. The idea seems pretty simple, but I'm still hesitant to carry anything that I'm not really trained to use.

Would packing the wound with hemostatic gauze before applying the chest vent help to stop the bleeding, or should the wound be left empty to allow air to escape?

Hi Mike, we only pack junctional wounds. Areas like the base of the neck, armpits, groin, and buttocks. To your point, we want a path for air to escape from the chest. Hope that helps.
