The Hymeks were probably the best hydraulics on the WR in the 60s/70s - reliable little work horses at home either on a seven or eight coach passenger service or freight. My first encounter with them was in Worcester shed in 1972. There were a dozen in there. Great locos.

No matter the era, the mechanics of the GWR always put the heart & soul into craftsmanship, hasn’t it?
@justinobrien35932 жыл бұрын
they look like a miniature class 47 I ain't seen one for a long time but I will visit a preserved railway next year and check a few hymeks out! Good video of these old-school locomotives 👏😎

The 35s were such great looking locos, classic 60s design and I like how so much thought went into the cab side windows, engine compartment windows and grills. They look a bit like a more refined version of the 47.
@OliverWoodphotography7 жыл бұрын
Yes I agree with that - a double engined CoCo Hymek would have been a really impressive machine. Funny how so many much less 'modern' looking locos were so much more successful than these though.
@ukmusichero7 жыл бұрын
i agree,..possibly one of the best looking locos of that time, and they had impressive pulling power too.
@OliverWoodphotography7 жыл бұрын
phill bygrave A bit like our endearingly ugly 25s in the North West ... They were also supposed to have more pulling power than you would expect. But the 35 in comparison really looks like someone genuinely considered the aesthetics of the bodywork.

There was a proposal to do a super- Western with 2x MD870's engines as used in the Hymek instead of 2x MD655's. But the Western Region has no need, and hydraulics were already out of favour with BR.

4 are preserved, only 2 are currently serviceable, D7017 at West Somerset Railway, and this one D7076 at The East Lancs Railway. D7029 is currently at The Severn Valley Railway undergoing restoration, it has been out of service since 23 July 1987, and is still a long way off running again, details are here www.westernchampion.co.uk/loco-d7029-restoration.php D7018 also at The West Somerset Railway is another long out of service loco, after a major engine failure in 1995, however this loco is expected back into service later this year, probable re-entry into service is the lines (The West Somerset Railway) diesel gala in June. You can keep up to date here www.depg.org/

Pair that engine with a Voith transmission and it'll do 2000 hp.
@jetstream4545 жыл бұрын
Don't get it, the engine would make the same HP regardless of transmission wouldn't it?
@DickHolman4 жыл бұрын
The engine was de-rated for the Hymek, for the loco's planned use, reliability, lower maintenance & fuel costs. You're thinking of the DB V 169, which ran the engine at 2000hp, & used a gas-turbine in tandem: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DB_Class_V_169
@howlingwolven4 жыл бұрын
@Vaas Montenegro Interesting ‘cos the SP krauts use the same engines and they make 2000 HP
@DickHolman4 жыл бұрын
@@howlingwolven See my comment. DB ran a much tighter maintenance schedule, because the engine was higher rated. And as Vaas said, you can't get 2,000hp from a 1,700hp engine, no matter what transmission is used.
@garethjones96354 жыл бұрын
Any diesel engine can be set to a range of power outputs within upper and lower limits. It's a question of the intended application, and there are trade offs between reliability, maintenance and fuel costs. I seem to remember that experiments uprating the engine to 2000bhp output took place on a few Hymeks shortly after introduction, but they were quickly rerated to the nominal 1740bhp service output. The ones used for banking duties on the Lickey also had their first gears locked out to prevent them from oscillating between gears when in use. Wonderful locomotives.

How long did she sit there before? A year, or two...? A rediculously sputtering start up, a terrible idle, smoke of all colours drifting around. And the engine in total runs just horribly rough. You'll hardly find a worse working MD 870.
