Hymn to Khonsu the Moon God | Egyptian Gods and Goddesses

Khonsu the Moon God is one of the most ancient Egyptian Gods. His name means "The Traveler" reflecting the fact that the Moon travels across the night sky.
Khonsu was worshipped and invoked by Ancient Egyptians to protect them against wild animals, and to aid them with healing. According to Egyptian mythology, when Khonsu caused the crescent moon to shine, women conceived, cattle became fertile, and all nostrils and every throat was filled with fresh air.

Khonsu in myths: Benevolent god of healing, pregnancy, protection, fertility, and good health. Khonsu in Marvel: Manipulative anti-hero who enslaves people to his will, ruining their mental health in the process, clashes with the other gods, and takes out his vengeance on whoever he sees fit.

@@atum I'll give them one thing though: They did get some things somewhat right. 1. Khonsu is associated with healing, and they gave him the power to grant his avatar healing armor. 2. His avatar's oath includes: "Do you swear to protect the travelers of the night?" The "travelers" part is likely a reference to his title: "The traveler."

Khonsu was once known as a God killer back when he was thought of as a Sun God like Horus, however as Horus rose in popular worship, Khonsu's tradition of worship was changed to a moon god, possibly to avoid confusion between the two. The Marvel version is based on the older vengeful Khonsu, the fierce fearless protector / warlord... when Khonsu became associated with the moon he became more associated with healing, fertility (both human and livestock [mainly cattle]) / marriage, honourable dealings, magick, protection of kings / travelers and as a lord of Maat. He is not often associated with Mithras however there is a good argument that some of his benign attributes have many interesting parallels. Btw while some consider traveler to be the correct interpretation, others call him wanderer... reminds me of the Tolkein poem '...not all those who wander are lost..." scholars presume it refers to legends about the travelling of the sun or moon through the sky, yet other deities also associated with this do not bear this label. It could refer to Khonsu being a celestial being who watches over a wide domain, if we were to associate Khonsu with Mithras, Mithras's title of Lord of Wide Pastures could be a hint of a domains that he silently watches over, whether earthly or celestial, is sadly only speculation.

Welcome! I'm always fascinated by other traveler's journeys and how they reach ATUM. 😀 It is certainly a joy for me to participate in the making of these videos. FYI...you have raised my consciousness about "Moon Knight." If offered on Netflix, I would be binge watching in a heartbeat! F. Murray Abraham (a favorite!!) as Khonshu.....Oscar Isaac is another favorite. Since the series is only offered on Disney+, I must be content with adding it to my "Wish List." I have more than enough to watch / listen to etc. without adding another "paid" subscription to add to feelings of "overwhelmness." Also, the high energy /action oriented works tend to send me retreating to the "temple" corner of my home to light candles and incense while invoking the Egyptian Gods and Goddesses in a more low-key way. In terms of additional info on Khonsu, I'm assuming you have searched on KZbin. When I searched "Moon God Khonsu" several links came up including one of my must-watch YT creators, Religion for Breakfast. Meanwhile, I continue to include this Hymn to Khonsu as part of my New Moon and Full Moon rituals each month. Many blessings to you as you continue your journey. 🧡
