I love the way the characters are set up in their archetypes. Houtarou is pure intellect, Chitanda is pure curiosity, Satoshi is experience, and Mayaka is basically the human, the everyman. Houtarou without Chitanda doesn't work, he won't get anything done above the mere minimum. Curiosity gets intellect to solve a problem. Houtarou without Satoshi is hopeless, as he can't keep the simplest facts straight. Intellect without experience is a bumbling fool. Mayaka kind of grounds everyone out to keep that balance. It's really a beautiful image and a great way to portrait this kind of idea.

Hyouka was really interesting to me. A lot of my friends touted it as a masterpiece, and initially I didn’t really understand the hype. As a whole, Hyouka doesn’t really have many climactic scenes to point to (for example, Oreki is frequently compared to Hachiman from Oregairu, and the Genuine Scene is so iconic), and yet the beauty of this series was in its simplicity. I found that when I finished the anime, despite not feeling very strongly about it while watching, I was disappointed there was nothing left to watch. It really is a charming series, and I completely agree with your analysis on Chitanda & her approach to life. Another great video!

@jajanken89173 жыл бұрын
first of all, thank you for publishing this video. your works almost always give me goosebumps when i'm watching. i've always liked hyouka for its great animations and art, but never thought of it deeply. well, i noticed the core themes of the story, but could not appreciate the story and characters more than art. now, after watching your video, i realise what's special about these characters. in the slice of life titles similar to hyouka you often see the main characters who are reserved and closed off the rest of the world, and often this part of their personality is close to extreme or is a consequence of their past. and i'm not saying that this is a bad approach, it's just that in hyouka it's different. oreki isn't portrayed as an outcast or some weirdo, he is more like a chill guy, who wants to live peacefully. and also, as you said, the ending does not give you a definite answer to the story, you dont see oreki completely change his personality and this is great. this is what makes hyouka stand out.

Hyouka has always fascinated me since, despite how many times I've watched it, I always consider its "main plot" despite not really having one per se, to have ended with Chitanda's "arc," which happens on like, episode 5 or something crazy early like that. But even then, the rest of the series, is still super mint and I think it helps that it really does go full throttle into that philosophy of the mundane you touched on and taking the every day seriously that even though literally solving a decade spanning mega mystery, that the rest of their days are still super interesting.

I actually did a book report on this series before, we were allowed to do any type of media entertainment or literature and what came to mind immediately was "I'm definitely reporting hyouka". It was really easy to jot down info since interest=more effort(especially the metaphors and the kanjis, so addicting to research different interpretations and analysis of people). Though I really didn't need to do this much since our teacher was very leniet when it comes to this things and just doing a simple essay could get me decent grade, which I did get, but it was worth. Tldr: Did a report bout hyouka with unnecessary efforts added but worth nonetheless.

For me I never finished Hyouka even though it has an intresting concept. I just seen it before in the Snafu series. I couldn't help comparing the two when I started Hyouka and Snafu to me just did it better and feels like it has more to offer. The characters aren't much alike besides the main character. But the concept helping people in school and character growth was enough for me in Snafu. And maybe I feel this way because I watched Snafu first

I can't talk enough about how great of an anime this is. I liked it because it had amazing mysteries and combined it with slice of life so it doesn't feel like you have to be on the edge of the seat all the time while also giving a nice mystery to solve. But it went way above beyond that once I started re-watching it. The elemments they add, the story.. It just feels like every word and every frame of this anime is deliberate and is meant for something. And the mysteries.... they are so tight. It's not just a loosey goosey deduction just get it off. It has actual logical reasoning and it takes a lot more effort to find loopholes or inconsistencies(Maybe sometime but I give them a pass cuz its an anime and it has to stick to the story). All in all,best mystery slice of life anime. Never seen any other like this.

This is one of your most interisting reviews for me. I watched this anime last year and it was... a weird ride. The episodes dedicated to Hyouka and Chitanda's Uncle felt like of the most powerful, immediate 10/10's for me in a long while. The OST, the art, the characters, the approach to story-telling via extremely unique forms of showing instead of telling (aka some of the most strategic and beautiful made info "dumps" and debates ever). And then... that anime ended. In 3 episodes. Because they solved the issue, and moved on. The mundaneness of the problematics they faced each day became increasingly cripling to my capacity of enjoying the show, especially with the way most of them palled in comparison to the first mistery. I would admit that some of the later misteries like the festival thriller film and the student council president's book felt comparable in their grandness, but the lack of a conductory main plot still felt strange. While whatching Hyouka, I found myself having to continuously re-attach myself to whatever the characters were doing each time a new curiosity arised. It's in this aspect that your approach to Hyouka feels interisting to me, because your review of it focus on it being and ode to the mundane, and the fact the main cast's interactions, willingness to enjoy the random happenings of life, and let this randomness detail their daily routine, has enough strength to carry this ode on it's shoulders. For me, it felt more as if I didn't have a sufficient plot to sustain my will to keep on cheering and see this characters lives and decisions till the end (apart from, maybe, Oreki). I feel somewhat "ashamed" of this opinion in a sense, because I felt in my skin the sheer powerfulness of Hyouka's first episodes, and it baffles me I couldn't carry that same feeling until the end of the series, because I don't think Hyouka ever felt boring. It just didn't feel impactful.
