If we had the energy that Bitcoin maximalists think that we do, we wouldn't be having a discussion about Bitcoin, because the debt-based system would be rocking in full gear. The fact that energy is becoming more scarce is why people are moving to Bitcoin; however, when we go off the energy cliff with no substitutes, then keeping an electronic ledger for currency that doesn't exist won't just seem foolish, it will be suicidal. Governments are printing like mad because the falling energy return on energy investment is making it impossible for them to cover the debts they are creating. The more they print, the more Bitcoin appears to be worth, but cut off the spigots and Bitcoin just dies. And you've all seen that, even if you don't want to admit it.

@@mickygarcia4251 Hmm, but bitcoin seeks out cheaper and cheaper energy. There are hydro dams that have been built in remote areas just for the purpose of mining bitcoin. Miners in the US are using the excess of baseload energy that would be otherwise wasted. Energy will continue to get abundant and bitcoin will be incorporated into all energy systems, this is an eventuality.

At 32 mins here, Jeff says there's never been a neutral reserve currency....but weren't all reserve currencies at one time pegged to the price of gold? Wasn't that the reason that countries who held the reserve currency status couldn't print more than the gold they had? It was when the printing happened, that the country holding the reseve currency status then had to abandon the gold standard ie. Britain in 1914 and the US in 1971.

He specifically said we've never had something that can't be manipulated. Gold was the closest thing we had before Bitcoin but the problem with gold is that it doesn't scale to a world economy with the internet. In other words, the only way to transfer money over the internet on a gold standard is to create gold derivatives like fiat dollars. As a result the gold gets centralized in central banks and manipulated until eventually the peg breaks as happened in 1971. The reason Bitcoin is different is because when you send it over the internet you're sending the actual bearer asset directly and you get final settlement in minutes. The only way to do this with gold is to load the gold onto a ship and transport it over the ocean in the physical world. This works in a high trust environment but it doesn't work between parties in conflict as there's no way of knowing if the other party will actually send the gold they promised.

This is such a great interview! Very educational. It's so hard to explain the dilution of money, by money printing, and inflation. A dollar is just worth less. Things don't gain value, but money loses value from this.

Yep, awesome system. Michael Saylor borrowed $4,172,420,000 to buy 140,000 BTC at an average price of $29,803, if he wanted or needed to cash out even half he would have a huge problem doing so. Back two weeks ago someone cashed out only 130 BTC twice in one day out of Binance. As a result Binance closed ALL withdraws for 6 or 7 hours each time. There is an entire tread on this on twitter.

Even if a person converted all their money to bitcoin. They still have to interact with the fear base system. Every time they want to purchase goods or services. Unless they happen to live in El Salvador, but for the rest of the world, people would have to convert their bitcoin to cash. Which is then a taxable event. So they would have to keep, very accurate records of all the conversions from bitcoin to cash and then fill in a very detailed tax report at the end of the year. This is the problem. It’s like a system inside a system. It’s a better system. But it’s surrounded 100% by the old system.

China only banned Bitcoin mining in certain states. Ownership of Bitcoin has never been illegal. Even today, Bitcoin mining is banned in certain Chinese states and allowed in others.
