Hyper converts suburban garage into Dark Matter garden studio

London-based architecture studio Hyper has created a garden studio in Hertfordshire, England, featuring a pivoting door and a charred timber facade that doubles as an insect hotel.
Hyper converted a suburban garage to create the work-from-home studio called Dark Matter.
The building's name refers to its facade, formed of 850 pieces of charred wood. The process, called Shou Sugi Ban, prolongs the life of the wood by making it more resistant to moisture.

Love the mature garden and particularly the Acer. The building looks perfect in the garden with its burnt blackened facad. Wandering how the sky light sources work.

I get the feeling they had an idea to make a “cool KZbin video” first, then designed the home specifically for that purpose. And is this bizarre phenomenon of “naming” their projects, as though it were a band, or had it’s own logo, as though they’re just wishing it goes “viral,” and everyone starts using the name on twitter? It feels like the way childish KZbinrs have to turn everything they say into a “catchphrase.” Granted, I’m an insane functionalist, and I also hate everyone and everything, including those kids on my lawn, and those clouds in the sky, but still. Feels a little “too cool for school.”
