I think its was more of how the design came to life as the seond edition of the original. The drivers and performance were documented in literature and tecnical briefs in a press kit at time of launch. I did get to hear them and the sound is really good...a new level of performance indeed. Obviously not for everyone given the price tag, but left a positive impression on those that had a chance to hear the demo in the hotel suite

The JBL Project Everest II speakers are beautiful. I wish I could hear them somewhere. The last time I heard a great JBL design was back in 1975, now recalling the OH WOW impression I had listening to a pair of JBL L300's at an audio store in the Buckhead neighborhood of Atlanta Georgia. So far, they are the most desirable speakers I have ever heard; but, I still can't afford them.

It's an awesome design. Though short on technical detail, I can find all the technical elements online with a little effort. What this does is provide a perspective on the design heritage and process of refinement, which won't be a part of any technical manual or tech sheet.

Some of the very best speaker systems in the world by B&W, Revel, Wilson Audio, Focal, MBL, etc are ported and they cost upwards of $250,000. Some of the best subs are sealed, so really doesn't matter weather it,s ported or sealed, it all depends on what the designers are trying to achieve with thier speaker. each has certain characteristics. now a poor designed vented system can sound bad or bloated have one base note sound but done right, either way can yield awesome sound.

You can still get an affordable Greg Timbers designed JBL horn loaded speaker for just under 500 bucks a pair... mainly the JBL Studio 530!

@bsod4u2 Indeed, it can even REDUCE distortion if implemented correctly. A vent is tuned to resonate at a particular low frequency, thereby "helping" the woofer out. Woofer excursion is reduced greatly at the tuning point, allowing the speaker to operate within a more linear part of its motor and reducing nonlinear distortion. If you've heard a bad vented box, it means the woofer is crap to begin with, the port/box/woofer combination isn't tuned correctly, or the port isn't correctly sized.

Oh yes, I agree JBL makes a decent speaker. I have now and have previously owned many different JBL boxes/models. Some have blown, some have been great, like anything else. I was merely musing about the fact that they could make a 7 minute video about the design and cosmetics of an expensive speaker but not include any details at all regarding the drivers used within them (which those who would be able to afford them would be quite interested in the details..). Seems ironic to me.

I bet they just use the ports as means to vent the system, to help lower distortion and not to boost level. So essentially the ports aren't going to contribute much to the sound.

A lot of their design philosophy is available on their website (goto their white papers section). JBL is second to none in terms of their theoretical/application design expertise. As you may or may not be aware, Floyd Toole helmed Harman/JBL's Design/R&D department for several years. He's considered one of the world's preeminent leaders in loudspeaker design and acoustics.

It's funny how this entire video focuses on cabinet design and mere cosmetics, yet reveals absolutely nothing about the drivers that are to be used. Personally, if I were to spend that much money on speakers I'd be a bit concerned about more than just how they look. Just because it's pretty doesn't mean it's responsiveness, frequency reproduction and power handling capabilities, and longevity are automatically worth the money.

A true audiophile would select the color that sounds the best. And something with ribbon drivers. Seems to me they kept changing the design because it didn't sound right? All I heard about was cabinet design, nothing about ground breaking driver design or maybe a high end crossover. Sorry JBL... fail.

FFWRD 2019: The Everest is still a wicked speaker! However, they're too expensive. A pair cost as much as an array of JBL Cinema speakers found in a top notch commercial Cinema. And yes, the Cinema arrays kick ass for far less cash. LoL. JBL's the best in any direction of purchase. From the new Synthesis line to the entry level Arena's (ass kickers by the way!). JBL's wall of sound is for real! ~ peace

Nice video, great looking speakers too... But, I don't know why JBL would use a ported system. You don't get accurate and as detailed bass with a ported system. So, that kinda boggles my mind a little.

"Form follows function". I'll bet they still use cheap MDF during construction. And for $60,000...No way Jose'. That is what Walmart furniture is made out of.
