A word of caution on the extended Z-height. The 8mm Zaxis rods won't be stiff enough. They will bend and will oscillate causing ripples on the surfaces. You should think of using 10mm rods instead. Also rubber feet are a must. They absorb vibrations that would otherwise find their way to the counter lever bed and cause rippling.
@JamieBainbridge7 жыл бұрын
Agree, even Tech2C says the 8mm rods are flexible at his standard height. I'm using 10mm rod on my Z and it's very solid. I've just got 200mm bed and 200mm Z height (400mm rods). I used the henryarnold bed carrier and LM10UU bearings.

But watching more, I do like the idea of building the stock printer then seeing what upgrades to consider and why. It'll be interesting to see the progress over time.
@nbchowning7 жыл бұрын
I ended up keeping the 8mm linear rods in their original position - on the back - and putting 2 lead screws on the sides of my bed (sort of like the d-bot). This resolved basically all of my z-axis issues. Eventually I'll probably switch to 10mm or 12mm linear rods but for now, this helped a TON

Thanks for the heads up. As other comments said I want to do mostly stock to see how it goes. Then decide what I want to change. I'll probably use the yellow balls that I am using on my FT-5 for the feet.

my hypercube came out great... my size is 250x197x235.... it will eventually be 250 on Z once i get new leadscrews... i have no issues with my Z, but i can see how some may say it can be week... I am considering making a second hypercube thats 300x300x300 with a dual rail Z axis for even stiffer bed since it will be larger
@Fugatech3DPrinting7 жыл бұрын
That would be huge!! I'd love to make a truly huge printer but I think my wife would kill me haha.

I had to think hard on which of these to start with. Maybe next year I will have the money to build a D-Bot.

How much space is in between the table it's on and the bottom of the 2040 extrusion and how much in between the top of the 2040 and the bottom of the build plate
@Fugatech3DPrinting4 жыл бұрын
Bottom can be as large or small as you want it but mine is 60mm off the floor. When homed, the build plate is about 100mm from the top of the 2020 extrusion.

Would you be able to post the cut lengths of the aluminium extrusion?
@Fugatech3DPrinting7 жыл бұрын
I didn't because what you need may be different than what I used. In the video description is the HyperCube Calculator. use that to figure out what size extrusions you need.
@israelcontreras53325 жыл бұрын
So when building the frame what is an acceptable level of the frame not being square? For example if I built one of the squares for the frame and it was off from being square by a 1/4 of an inch. Is that too much?
@modelt89515 жыл бұрын
3d printers are very precise, so probably but I think it would just offset things, not actually affect quality of print
@Fugatech3DPrinting5 жыл бұрын
Ya that is too much. They need to be perfect.

What if each set of 4 is slightly off, but all equally? Say I'm trying to get 315mm x4 pieces and I end up with 317mm x4 for that set. Will that be problematic?

After researching which 3D printer starter kit to buy I am looking at the Anet A8. I then stumbled across your brilliant video. When I do get my first 3D printer I would love to convert it into a Hypercube the reason being is (a) aesthetics I like the cube shape frame much better AKA Ultimaker and (b) I don't like the way the hotbed moves around the extruder as opposed to the way it is the extruder that moves around the hotbed on the Hypercube. Before I buy my first 3D Printer which would be better for conversion, an Anet A8, a different Anet or just a reasonable Prusa i3 copy (I am looking at the ones on eBay for about £130.00. P.S. What a great workshop you have - is that a PC in a perspex frame behind you?
@Fugatech3DPrinting7 жыл бұрын
I have seen a lot about the A8 being a decent machine but have not used one myself. I personally like the Folgertech 2020 i3 which costs a little bit more. bit.ly/2gBLcqg Another good thing about it is that it is make of 2020 extrusion so you can reuse that for your HyperCube which will cut costs. Just remember, you get what you pay for. The cheaper the kit, the cheaper the components are and might be more work than its worth. The PC in the background is one that I just finished up. One cool thing i did, i designed some 2020 and 2040 that is 3d printable... BUT i made the hole in the center 0.25 inches so that you can slide steel rod into the hole to reinforce the 3d printed extrusion. Works like a charm for this printer. I have it on thingiverse. 2040 extruded aluminium found on #Thingiverse www.thingiverse.com/thing:4150905
