This is one of those films that has enough complexity to where you don’t know whether to laugh or cry sometimes. Great video !!

Thank you and bless you for making this analysis. This is not a film the vast majority of viewers are prepared to experience on a first viewing. I appreciate you bringing this guide into existence

Very good explanation of the importance of editing. I watched Magnolia for the first time today and even though I'm a big fan of hyperlink cinema, it was not for me. I still noticed all the great editing choices to connect the storylines. The "Wise Up" scene is an excellent example. Keep up the nice work!

Magnolia itself was heavily inspired by Robert Altman's Short Cuts.

When PTA wrote the raining frogs scene, he didn't know it was a biblical story. It was only after William Macey or someone pointed that out to him that Anderson later inserted little references to that passage while directing the movie.

What about the kid rapping, saying that you can know who committed the murder if you would only listen to me. That was never really resolved for me.

If I Remember correct, they do arrest who did it? Either way, it's just there to show that the cop wouldn't listen ( kinda playing up Riley's character being a bumbling cop).

In the published version of the screenplay, Dixon's story, as well as The Worm, get a bit more attention.

@nl3064 there's a brief shot of someone being arrested, I believe. That's not the same as resolving the emotions. As you said, Dixon is really only there now to show how disconnected Jim is. That's in contrast with how he interacts with Claudia.

For me, the frogs were a break point in the movie to then to move to conclusion. I wasn't bothered by the incongruity of this part of the movie and as what seemed to be an absurd happening. It was presaged with 8.2 which tied back to the biblical source. In regards to the music, Wise Up was the point at which everyone was near their low as you said. But in the ending the lyrics in Save Me was exactly the hopeful resolution of the character arc for Claudia and Jim.

I don't agree with the Linda Partridge assessment. I don't think she was thinking about the money and I don't think that was the struggle or even the intent of Anderson

She got with Earl for money, but she has fallen for Earl as he has approached his end.
