Hands down, one of the best videos on understanding bodybuilding that I’ve ever seen. I never comment on KZbin stuff, but this was absolutely fascinating! Every bodybuilder needs to watch this. I actually think it would help the mental health of a huge percentage of us bodybuilders out there. You explain genetics in a way that helps us understand and accept our bodies…eliminating the frustration when we “can’t build this” or “can’t look like that”. Allows us to step back, understand our ratios, bone lengths, tendon lengths, etc….and learn how to work WITH our genetics…instead of against it.

africans have long legs and short torso though, I see that as a minus. And african variation is huge, compare west african supergenetics with east african somali skinny-fat genetics, the best and worst genetics in one continent

44:00 Good video, but Flex Wheeler is supposed to have had one of the broadest clavicles? I really doubt that, I would even say it was rather narrow.

Joe you look great man. I think there are levels with genetics and when we dial in sleep, nutrition etc it’s amazing how much we can transform. I’m definitely proof of this at 42. I’m not a big guy but I’m maximized a lot of factors which helped a lot. Thankfully I have a 31 inch waist so that helps. Because my shoulders aren’t so good lol. I’m working on it, anyway thanks for the great video. I’ve learned so much from you and John Meadows (RIP) and you both really helped me transform from someone who just goes to the gym to someone who gets asked for help now in the gym. Much appreciated!!

Genetics are EVERYTHING when it comes to bodybuilding!!! I have poor to average genetics and it took me years to understand that there is nothing I can do to look as good as some of my friends who are genetic freaks. You’re 100% right in that even with massive gear use, a genetically average person will never look as good as a genetically gifted person using no gear or just small amounts.

Someone did a video on skin colour and birth location in relation to how developed muscles look. Seems people born closer to the equator with dark skin have an aspect of more rotund muscles as they radiate and dissipate heat easier. People from colder climates or some Asian countries have a blockier, more compact look to the muscles to retain more body heat.

well genetics is everything from you skin tone to how durable your joints are. so, every single thing about your body is genetics. as far as genetics in bodybuilding go, i had 2 really important examples in my life. for anyone who has been in the sport for a while will remember the Mens physique competitor Jeff Seid. He went to my highschool and we wrestled in the same weight class. and me being 17 and him being 15 we were both super lean. he was good enough to earn a pro card and i wasnt good enough to get anywhere near a stage, at literally the exact same height and muscle mass. so i realized at that point that structure and muscle bellies are something that i just didnt have (at least the god tier structure he had). i also was a trainer at la fitness when i was 22 and there was a guy there who in the course of 12 months went from pretty fat to a little phil heath. he no shit was a solid 245 in about a year who was blasting full and round AF everywhere. the shittiest part about it was this guy literally trained however he wanted. whatever he felt like doing that day he would do. i saw him do nothing but hang snatches for an hour. i saw him do deadlifts and curls supersetted. he went from pulling 135 to 650 in about 6 months. that being said, those are obviously the outliers. i think too many people let their "bad genetics" hold them back. you might be surprised if you grind

I dont think its people "letting" thier bad genetics hold them back, its that theres no way you cant. If you have bad genetics, they hold you back, thats kind of the definition of bad genetics. They limit you. If you can "overcome" them then you didnt have bad genetics. Its exhausting trying to fight it too. Ive spent years of my life being sore or in pain every single day when i wake. The constant food monitoring, the mental stress of having to ignore all the aching joints and stinging muscles. Its just so taxing. Its miserable. I dont blame anyone for walking away from the hobby, i wouldnt wish this on most of my enemies.

Thank you for doing this. It drives me nuts when I hear people misuse words regarding genetics. I am surprised how many pro bodybuilders think there is such thing as a “high Lat insertions”. The Lat inserts in the same spot in all human beings…

Talking about bone strcutures and all. I personally think that ur frame/ structure is more important than full on amount of Mass. If i compare steve reeves to for example arnold no doubt arnold is bigger in size however steve reeves wide clavicle and narrow waist maks him 10x more aesthetic compared to arnold. at least in the eyes of the general population. Not to discredit the hard work for steve reeves however i think he was carried by his genetically gifted bone structure. I think his torso is what made him aesthetic, everything flows and his pectus for some reason even benefitted him. I see the reason why people want to aim for that physique, however if you are cursed like me with small ribs cage and narrower clavicle u kinda cant get that type of aesthetic. Thou in my case my waist/ hip is small its like 27-29 however my clavicle and ribs are more narrow than said hips.

What do you think about people that can’t put on muscle as fast as another guy. Do you think they can eventually get to the same top weight as a guy that builds muscle faster? So maybe One guy gets to 240 in a decade but can’t get any higher but, the other guy it takes two decades. So they both have the same amount of muscle they can hold, but it takes the other person longer. Is that a thing?

I put on like 20 lbs of pure muscle the first 9 months I trained (first 3 months was learning and wasn’t eating anything really).. I was eating good and healthy but also ate some junk foods😅

Muscular Development Magazine supposedly did a genetic study (I read it) of all the cooperating athletes 15 years ago, and recent retirees, and Coleman won outright, regarding his muscle growth genetics.

I think you have done a great “proof of concept” video here. Meaning, there’s potential to produce a higher effort follow up that will get views for a decade. Here’s my pitiful 2 cents: what if you had actual athletes (clients?) get actual measurements (Dexa?) and display the ratios to really drive home the point. The audience walks away with sort of a “template” to determine if they have what it takes before taking “super supplements.”
