More specifically, "Hysteria" is related to the word "Hysterectomy", in that "hystera" is the Greek work for "uterus"... Being "hysterical" meant being driven to be uppity by your uterus. So, a little satisfaction, and the woman would be docile and subservient as she were "supposed" to be...

This movie is historically accurate. We learned about it in a class called queer theory. During the victorian area, where sexuality was a subject of taboo, it was thought that the female orgasm was an ailment that needed treatment. The vibrator was invented as a method of treatment for "hysteria." Crazy stuff.

But also remember this. men are allowed to openly cry now (at least on TV :-) and look after their kids without getting the bad look or they can use deodorant, skincare even makeup. they can style themselves and cook and not do sports and what else not without being considered "unmanly" (at least most of the time). We're definitely not perfect yet. But I'm hoping we're getting there. And now I'm gonna shut up. sorry for burying you in so much text but this is a topic that kinda gets to me.

I just wanted to point out that the whole "women and children first" thing is no longer in use. Already after the Titanic sank people realized that this was in fact a pretty bad choice even back then since most families who survived the sinking were left we nothing (especially since their classical male earner was now dead) and very much grieved over their losses. Btw I also do agree that men suffer from similar culturally demanded necessities as women but think about it this way:

i will not deny there is a double standard. but it should be noted that i personally dislike men who are "players" just as much. that being said, you have to understand that century was a transitional period. yes, women should have control over their bodies, and there is nothing wrong with several partners, it's quite common. but, mothering many children with multiple fathers? contracting and spreading STD's? just because they can't control their own urges or can't seek alternative solutions?

Surely what helped the European civilizations excel was due to so many civilizations being close to each other being able to share advancements quite easily. Africa was huge & different tribes & cultures crossed each others paths more rarely. You then have to realize that some of the most advanced civilizations that ever existed were not European & one of the most significant one being in Africa, Egypt. Scientists are today only solving math problems Ancient Egypt knew thousands of years ago.

anglicky69 But that was a time when lots of men couldn't get married or even vote until they were wealthy. So they went to prostitutes out of frustration, caught a disease, passed it to their wife, then she died, then they married a younger woman, she caught the disease, and so on. They didn't know about diseases. They didn't know why their first few children were dying young. It was all ignorance in those days. I read that some men believed that to be cured of an STD, they could pay to have sex with a virgin, a child. They knew nothing. It wasn't anything to do with morality. They just didn't know what was risky or not, medically. Those men were sluts, you think? Because they wanted a partner and carried a disease?
