The paper trick inside a socket works great. I've used some dumb-dumb before too. I learned that trick in the first indie shop I worked in. We're talking back in '98- '99. Anything works really. Those flap motors/ variable intake runners love to break the linkage or the diaphragms. Doesn't help that nearly all of the manifolds are made out of plastic now on almost every make. The D.I. engines are of course even worse due to the carbon build up. A good walnut blast usually is the ticket, and sometimes you can soak the variable flaps with some B12 or carb cleaner and get them moving again, but for the amount of labor and to prevent a comeback in a shop setting it's a simple bolt-on/ off affair with a new OEM mani. The VW TSI is huge for this job. I've personally replaced probably 50 of those manifolds before as part of a service bulletin. Comes exactly like this one, complete with vacuum hoses, pcv, etc

The actuator motor is most likely what set the code. The motor is pretty reliable by itself, but common for that small plastic dog link you had the screwdriver on to break. Not available by itself, have to buy the entire actuator for ~$200. But I just fabricated one from nylon bushings I picked up from the hardware store. $2 in parts and few minutes of dremeling to make the slots. Code seems to come back immediately after a clear so ECM tests this at start-up. My guess is it applies too much torque and if part is broken the motor goes out of range. I haven't seen sticking runners myself but in this case looked to be a good call to replace whole assembly.

Just messed with a KIA today was parked for 2 years and this code jumped up but without the poor driving conditions that yours had . So I just removed the servo motor ran it threw its paces and lubed the pivots and all was good . I believe the code was triggered by a hi voltage spike when the motor was first asked to run ?

had this code (p2017) in my 2012 kia sportage, turned out to be vcm motor wouldnt always work,keeping flaps either shup or open, causing voltage spikes when vcm motor wouldnt turn. oem part not dorman, for the love of God.
