Bit late to the party, but i really have to agree with the points made with the i30n DCT. I bought a new 2020 i30n because it was manual and had a manual handbrake. Even now nearly 2 years on i just love driving it. I would never have upgraded to the facelift with a manual. A few days ago i test drove the DCT to see what the fuss is all about. I am now the owner of a new PB DCT that i will pick up on the 5th of Jan. I have always driven manual and never tried a semi-auto. This was crazy fun and when pottering around effortless and quiet (on the inside). The NGS does what it says and if i could have it on all the time, i would be in prison haha. The DCT is definitely not a step down in the case of this car. Its a gem!

@@chrisandshazza01 Hey Chris, where are you located? What’s currently done to the car? I’ve had a few different suspension setups on the GR, a pursuit of happiness you might say. The single biggest upgrade was the sway bars. I’m of the opinion the only ones to get are the Cusco items. From there if the car is not a rallye/circuit get the rallye rear shocks. DNA top mounts for the front of the car add camber and castor at the same time, and the white line castor bush is also a very worthwhile addition. The combination of these 3 will make for a very capable road car. The other thing that’s absolutely critical is the drivers seat. The original isn’t up to the task at all, and once you change it you’ll realise all you were missing.

How's your car going? Any mods-tyres etc yet!? Personally, I don't think it's that good OFF the line, unless you want to fu.. the clutch very quickly. Prefer a little role b4 flooring. I had the original i30N performance pack and my GR Yaris convenience pack in uk is better for me. Allows one to drive it enthusiastically virtually daily. I30N was utter shite in damp, wet, greasy and cold conditions if floored. Both on the original pz4's, yes likely improved a little now, but also on michelin ps4s's I had fitted! Bunny hopped in the wet, slight tramlining and torque steer at times too. That hasn't been eliminated. Chasing Cars dct review in the dry confirmed this! Yes, the exhaust suited the car, actually think mine sounded much better than this example. Don't miss it though. Just wish they'd upped the fake noises in the GR. The loudness pre max revs should be nearly double the noise, ideally. It's what you hear, NOT people outside, unless solely trying to impress young teenagers

@@James-RJM Hi James, yeah loving mine. I've fitted the TRD stripe, ceramic coat and had the wheels refinished in dark grey. Pandora alarm. Pros Rapid in any weather. It's great in the north west uk where it's greasy after raining on a hot day. Had barely any wheel spin. It's actually really solid inside, I think its annoying when all the reviews say it's cheap it's actually a nice dash and well built. The JBL stereo is decent, rear speakers are terrible though so most of the music is in front of you. Love the heads up display. Engines very flexible, I dont rev it out much because it's so quick. Handling is really sharp when mid corner and it's very flat in the fast corners. Great daily driver because it covers ground so quick, small and agile, easy to park. Looks ace, really love it with the TRD stripe. Quite like the fake engine sound between 2-5k revs. Cons Bit of excessive lean in tight slow corners. Not really a con but it gets loads of attention and most love it. I'm just waiting for the day someone keys it. Sick of turning off lane assist and auto stop. Would also prefer it if you could turn on the autoblip as permanent because it's really effective. Wish it would lock after driving above 5mph like other cars. Wish I could start the car in track because I use that mode the most. Normal mode does tend to understeer but partly because the steering Is quite slow from the centre, so it's literally not steering enough but also the nose runs a little bit wide in that mode. Bit thirsty on the fuel as well. Getting about 27.7mpg, I tend to do a lot of short journeys. Not tried any other tyres yet, but will probably go for Pzeros. Next jobs: Repaint the calipers Poss lowering springs TRD splitter and side skirts

@@Stringwar Hi mate. Pleased to hear you're having a blast!🙂 Agree with much of your feedback. No wheelspin so far on Goodyear Eagle f1 asymmetric 5's!! Like you, I watched the tyrereviews 18's test but ruled out the pzeros on the weak aquaplaning etc. Yes, better than the original pz4's that came on my N apparently, but still too much of a negative. A5's are very good. Firmer sidewalls to michelin ps4s's, that I was running on the N. Wish I'd put the A5's on that now. You should, seriously, consider them mate. I rev out to max when feasible. I get your slightly too much lean at times comment! Retested a circuit pack the other day to get a proper back to back, instead of 7+ months gap. Wasn't disappointed with my convenience pack version. I preferred it. Partly due to the extra toys etc but also prefer the suspension, 8/10. Yes, if tracking you'd be better off with the circuit pack car. Again, no torsens intervention with the circuit pack when keeping esc on, lol.... Closed my eyes as I saw your keying the car comment! I have parking anxieties always. You can only do as much as is possible. In my case, if I park up and have a bad vibe, I leave lol. It's taken me half an hour plus to park, after finding a space instantly 😡 The joys of a new/bespoke car that you love! And yes, if I caught someone damaging her, I'd likely end up in prison. I also have an anal, now subconscious starting routine! Wan.y start Stop off, imt on, track mode, hold down lane assist off! Boring as fu.. but tolerable 😃 The no auto lock as pulling away is strange, economy on the main screen for longterm is 25.3 lol but the figure at the end of a drive, b4 opening the door, is usually late 20's to early 30's and on a 50 miles drive, without going crazy, I've seen about 34😉 My opinion only of course, but it might be prudent to change the tyres b4 the other minor mods you've mentioned?! Driving mine on the road only and keeping esc on, I've never had wheelspin or understeer, oversteer, tramlining, bunny hopping etc. Yes, you can feel the electronics working below you, but it is still effective and great fun👍

While I understand your reasoning for comparing these 2, not sure they should be compared? I think the market for each is quite different? Just price, HP and Torque is too limiting or narrow? I liked your review of each, they were great reviews - not sure on them being in the same vid and 'comparing'? To me comparing would indicate a buyer is deciding between the 2. I just don't see it with these 2 cars? There may be people in this category, my opinion is not many are. Both excellent in their categories and look amazing but not sure if they compete like this? Happy to be proven or convinced otherwise! Yaris, AWD, small 2 door, light, one mode (always on), suit someone wanting a base rally car and no passengers. i30N, FWD, 5 door, 2 general modes at the flick of a switch. Calm and easy when driving normally - mad when the button is pressed. Tarmack oriented. Little bit porky but the owner does not care for the few milliseconds lost. The fact that it is 5 door with a usable boot and has a tame mode is of much more interest . If you were comparing on performance only, then the Yaris will win all day long. That power to weight is fantastic on top of AWD. Different league to the i30N. I don't see the Yaris as a hot hatch as such because of its one (no compromise) dimension. i30N is a compromise car. Even the Golf GTI and Focus ST are compromise cars (and darn good at it). The other interesting point is the comment on the DCT and getting 'stuck' in a gear. I drove the DCT and there were quite a few times in normal, boring, 'I am just going across town to the shops' mode that the DCT would not go up to the gear I wanted. Was always having to flick the paddle to get it to change up. I assume that the transmission might 'learn' me and start shifting up earlier? The manual is appealing because I am old school and love manuals, and I get to select the gear in all modes. I know the DCT is MUCH faster and awesome. But feel I would be saying 'I wish I was in the manual' more times than 'I wish I bought the DCT'. Plus the fact that these manuals are a tech that is disappearing. The i30N and Yaris next gens will be hybrids/electrics and 'autos'. Damn good, damn fast, just not the old tech manual. Now is the last chance to get something performance and manual before they go away.
@ProductReviewCars3 жыл бұрын
Interesting take, and plenty of valid points. My main point for comparison was on price and power. Seeing as many Australians buy to own, rather than lease. So I'd put price way up there as a reason to compare the two. Since buyers would more than likely see what else they can get for a similar price. Then the 200kW argument kicks in, as spending more on a Golf GTi which has less power, would make a lot less sense than buying an i30N with slightly more power than the GR Yaris (on paper). The GR Yaris is in it's own segment, but I thought it would be fun to try and choose another hot hatch at the top of its game with one of the best hot hatches you can buy on the market.

Performance wise the GR kills the i30N. It's literally built for rally motorsport. AWD plus when you engage the clutch and rip the hand brake it disconnects the front drive shafts aka drifting. BUT since dickheads want to sell it for 20k over what its worth overall the i30N will be largely more popular. Not to mention, as a JDM owner and life time fan, these days its so expensive and more of a financial flex to say you got this or that at car meets when it comes to aftermarket parts.

Having driven and considered both I ended up buying the GR, as it is just far more special car. Yes the I30n is sublime, but it’s just a very good hot hatch based on a regular i30 model. The Yaris on the other hand is fully bespoke, extremely limited, hand built (probably at a loss for Toyota) and hence gives a lot more sense of occasion compared to pretty much anything in the price range. And speaking of the price, albeit Yaris is not cheap, i believe it will hold its value much better than a Hyundai.

@pandaonmars3 жыл бұрын
@@user-vk4vd7vr5t so basically you are saying that the i30N is a better hot hatch cause it’s larger and more practical? Coming from the Abarth 500 I can say that I never experienced any space issues. Took it on long road trips, moved houses with it, fit occasional passengers on the rear sit and overall saw no problem with it as a daily. With Yaris being significantly larger than the 500, it’s really as much car as one could need for a family of two, at least here in Europe. With additional benefits of lightness and ease of parking that’s much appreciated a lot more often than a bit of extra hauling space.

@@user-vk4vd7vr5t I own a GRY and totally agree with you. That said, where I live I have twisty and bumpy B roads and in this environment the GRY has no competition from its hot hatch rivals and in the wet well I can’t think of anything much that would live with it across those twisty backroads. "The i30 N is a better hot hatch than the GR Yaris" is an oxymoron in that a hot hatch is not supposed to be a car you can drive sedately (ie: not hot) to acheive the advantage. That is the definition of a "cool hatch" as opposed to "hot" which the GR Yaris most definitely is. You sure can tell which company showers the reviewer with the most perks when they choose the lesser car over the better one. I don't own a GR Yaris nor an i30 by the way.
@ProductReviewCars3 жыл бұрын
I mean isn't that why it's a hatchback? Practicality x performance. Wish we got the most perks! Clean slate, no company has any say or influence on how we review cars. GR Yaris is an excellent hot hatch, but in Aus, you're going to get more out of the i30N. That's the verdict.
@KJ-op8dp3 жыл бұрын
@@ProductReviewCars You've missed my point. This is a hot hatch review. A hot hatch is something you have to drive fast to get the best out of it. It has abilities that aren't really apparent unless you a) break the speed limit, or b) go to a track. This is the exact reason why you *didn't* award the GR Yaris the win. Which simply leads people like myself to believe that Hyundai threw in a perk or two to 'sway' your opinion. Hot hatches, particularly of the traditional 3-door variety (see Mark 1 Golf GTi, the one that started it all) aren't about practicality. You can hype that up as the 'winning factor' in this review, but that also means the lesser car wins this comparison on that alone. THe conclusion that makes the most sense is "The Hyundai wins on practicality, but the GR Yaris is the better hot hatch.
