Ioniq 38kwh owner here. The charger cap hanging down I haven’t really given much a thought about. The plastic is softer than the paint clear coat, so as long as it isn’t moving around and dragging dirt around it shouldn’t be an issue. Agree with you about the handling, steering is numb, it basically started out as a Prius type car, so they’ve sort of gone with a lifeless driving experience to match Toyota. The traffic moving off warning is a standard part of the driver alert system. It was on by default when I got my Premium model.

Nice to see you got a chance to drive the Ioniq and compare it to your Kona. I love my Ioniq and as it's the 28kWh model has faster charging on DC fast chargers than the one you have on loan.

@@EVPuzzle I've seen Bjorn as well on the new Ioniq and said on a 1000km trip has shown the classic Ioniq gets there faster, all thanks to faster charger speeds.

@@TassieEV that I really dont understand, I mean battery density goes up about 6% each year. So Hyundai should be able to upgrade the Ioniq with a 34kwh battery without any extra kilos added and retain the same charging speed, curve as the old one. Yet the new one weighing 80 kgs more than the old one Hyundai claims that the increased battey size is the reason it has to charge slow. Am I missing something out or is this excuse for doing a sloppy Job? I own a classic Ioniq and loves it😀

I was originally intending on buying a Ioniq but came across a rather unusual but critical deal breaker for me - the inability to fit roof bars (which were listed as not being “homologated”). This resulted in me going for the Kona with its roof rails allowing me to carry bikes and kayaks on the roof and I’ve been delighted with the purchase since day 1.

Have you decided to go for the Mini? I test drove the 28 kwh version at the end of 2016. It was quite good to drive but the dealer wouldn't shift from the £26k asking price so I bought a Zoe ZE40 (battery inc) for under £18k. I quite liked the Ioniq to drive but the bland styling would have got to me after a year or two. Amazing efficiency, it also means miles per minute charging is a lot better too. I liked the Peugeot E 208 best out of every EV I have driven.

@@EVPuzzle That's why I bought an old SLK as a toy to enjoy for a few years. I expect EV prices to be more sensible by the time I want another change. The SLK does feel like the stone age after the Zoe even though I enjoy it.

The EV Puzzle 🤣😂 on the handling front, I too felt the front tyres were a bit loose but changed all 4 tyres to Michelin Crossclimate (from energy) and it’s miles better, same efficiency, better handling and is night and day better in the circa zero temperatures. The only downside I’ve found is they get a bit noisy when you lean on them in the corners and I don’t know the life of them yet.

It's so useless for seriously long drives, though. Worse even than the 28 kWh version that preceded it. Bigger battery, lower charge speed. Really by now it should fit a 56 kWh that charges to 140 kW. Which would be a 2020-worthy Ioniq in my book. I don't champion ever larger batteries ad they do add to the footprint of the car over its lifetime and especially the break-even mileage vs a gas car for emissions, production+consumption. But 56 kWh as a biggest version, that'd be nice, wouldn't it? At such good efficiency, it would hang with Model S75D and S90D type of cars over long drives. Say, Bjorn's 1000 km challenge or Oslo-Trondheim-Oslo. The Peugeot E208 is almost there for charge speed, just a bit thirsty I believe?
@EVPuzzle4 жыл бұрын
Just limited space in the same configuration. Batteries have advanced enough to give that size and the Ioniq pack space isn't big enough. Personally , I'd have used some boot space to add a few more kWhs. It's better than old Ioniq in some ways but like you say, 1 step forward but another back
@amiddled4 жыл бұрын
As somebody that owns a 38kwh, it sounds like you've been watching too much TeslaBjorn. In most countries, the vast majority of rapid chargers are 50kw (although 150kw+ rapids are increasing) and the difference in charge speed between the old and the new Ioniq is minimal on a 50kw charger. Add in the fact that most people charge from home and do the vast majority of trips under 200miles and it isn't really an issue. Even if I was to do 250 mile trip in the UK, the 38kwh would still end up being faster as you'd stop later and have to top up less to make it to 250. You can't just "fit" a 56kwh on current battery tech. They've already squeezed as much as they can into this by extending the pack into the central tunnel. You have to remember that the Ioniq platform isn't a dedicated EV skateboard platform, it is a compromise for the hybrid versions.

david pearn Agreed. I can’t see how that would be sustainable in mixed real world driving.
@EVPuzzle4 жыл бұрын
Perhaps real world just means driving without thought of efficiency. I consistently achieve good efficiency. It's just location , route and careful driving. Take the scenic route not the fastest and slow a few mph and efficiency soon increases

The EV Puzzle but that’s me all over OCD on efficiency - 50 mph , no brakes , drafting...you name it. Almost no city traffic though.
@chrisabbott6834 жыл бұрын
The EV Puzzle Yes there will be circumstances where it’s achievable, I’ve done it in my Model 3, but it requires very specific conditions and I don’t think that number can be treated as a realistic consumption guide for general consumption.
